"Hirome Market" is a must-visit spot when you travel to Kochi. The absolute must-try is, of course, the katsuo no tataki (seared bonito). And naturally, we had to get some for ourselves✨ The fragrant, perfectly seared bonito served with salt and condiments is incredible. Enjoying it in the market’s lively atmosphere made the travel experience feel even more authentic. But what I truly loved about visiting was the freedom—you don't have to stick to just one food stall for your entire meal. As you stroll through the market, you'll find much more than just bonito. There’s a huge variety of rare seafood delicacies, bar snacks, fried foods, and souvenirs. Just around the corner, we stumbled upon a stall selling Kochi’s famous "Sunday Market Imo-ten" (fried sweet potatoes). I had no idea you could get this Sunday Market specialty here at Hirome Market, so I definitely did a double-take! Freshly fried, crispy on the outside, and piping hot and fluffy on the inside—they make the perfect snack to munch on while exploring the market. Over at the souvenir section, they were selling aosa (sea lettuce) by weight. That little corner, filled with the fresh scent of the ocean, quickly became one of my favorite spots. The best way to do it is to grab whatever catches your eye from different stalls and bring it back to a table in the communal dining area. It’s so much fun to pick up small portions, saying, "Let’s try this one too!" and share everything with your group. Home to a massive collection of local Kochi street food, izakayas, and yatai (food stall) style shops, it’s one of the best spots to experience the city's vibrant dining culture. We visited around noon this time, so the crowds were much thinner. We didn’t have to wait long and easily grabbed a seat, allowing for a more laid-back, leisurely meal. However, if you visit at night, the vibe completely shifts. Once the lights go on, the yatai atmosphere really kicks in, and the whole place becomes incredibly lively, offering a true taste of local Japanese nightlife. The crown jewel here is, without a doubt, the seared bonito (Katsuo no Tataki) at Myojinmaru. They sear the fish right in front of you, giving off an intense, mouthwatering aroma. The outside boasts a smoky charcoal crust, while the inside remains perfectly raw. Eating it with salt, sliced garlic, and green onions is the authentic Kochi way to enjoy it. Aside from Myojinmaru, we also tried some gyoza and sweet potato tempura. The gyoza has that classic Japanese izakaya feel—pan-fried with a crispy crust and a juicy filling. The sweet potato tempura, a huge local favorite in Kochi, was perfectly crisp on the outside and naturally sweet on the inside; it makes for a fantastic side dish or snack. 🗓️ Day 1 In the morning, I flew from Haneda Airport to Kochi Ryoma Airport on flight JL493. After arriving at the airport, I rented a car and drove to Katsurahama Beach.
