Koper is one of three costal towns in an otherwise landlocked Slovenia. It’s history is amazing which you can see in the cartography of old maps and the Venetian style buildings that have been preserved since it’s most prosperous period. Visit the Praetorian palace and the old clock tower for an amazing view of the city.

Koper --- the fifth largest city in Slovenia. It's one of the two beautiful coastal towns along with Piran! Koper is small but it's narrow, botique-lined streets anf historical sites. Walked the esplanade past the Manzioli House and the Church of St George, then caught the coastal bus to Koper (€2.80, 15 min). Koper’s old town is the surprise: it was Venetian Capodistria, and the Praetorian Palace (15th century, currently houses the town hall—exterior free, interior only by event) sits on Titov trg with the 15th-century bell tower you can climb for €4.The sea esplanade from the marina to the old town gate is flat, 1.2 km, lined with salt-trade palaces. I ate a sardine plate at a marina konoba for €9, card ok. Mistake: I allocated 2 hours total and rushed; Izola’s marina coffee + Koper’s square deserve 4 hours if you stop for the Istrian olive oil tasting (€5 at a deli near the palace). Another mistake: driving—Koper old town is a limited-traffic zone, parking outside costs €1.20/hr and the walk in is 10 min anyway. Worth it? Yes for travelers basing in Trieste: two Slovenian salt-towns, one bus hop, €0 entry to the core experience (promenades, squares, harbor). The €4 Koper tower is the only upsell worth considering. Question: between Izola’s fishing calm and Koper’s Venetian pomp, which salt-town personality would you trade a day in Venice for?

✅️ Piran is Slovenia’s most beautiful coastal town, is often called "Little Venice" (piccola Venezia) because it shares deep historical and architectural ties to the Venetian Republic, featuring narrow cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, and a prominent bell tower overlooking the Adriatic Sea. ✅️ Piran is a charming compact town that can easily be explored on foot in a single day. · * things to see / do in Piran: ⛪️🍦 · Tartini Square is the heart of Piran and one of the top things to see. Admire the bronze monument of violinist Giuseppe Tartini - an Italian composer and violinist, it’s surrounded on three sides with colourful restaurants, cafes, and shops, all with Venetian architecture. It’s the perfect spot to walk around, and look out for the iconic, red Venetian House standing on the square’s edge. · Wander the narrow alleys. Piran is covered in a tangle of narrow streets, lined with colourful homes and shops. Walking around feels like a bit of a maze! · Walls of Piran: Walk up the steep hill to explore this medieval fortification system constructed between the 7th and 15th centuries. For a small fee of €3, to enjoy panoramic views overlooking the orange-roofed peninsula. · St. George's Parish Church & Bell Tower: This historic hilltop church dominates the Piran skyline. · Riva Prešeren Promenade: Walk along the stone coastal promenade. It is the prime destination for catching a romantic Adriatic sunset. · Indulge in Coastal Cuisine: Slovenia is home to quite a few traditional dishes, but when in Piran, you must eat seafood. Seafood is one of the main attractions in Piran. There are countless seafood restaurants in town to choose from. We personally ate at little restaurants - Fritolin pri Cantini in Maj trg, the sweetest little hidden market square. The restaurant was no-fuss, family-owned, affordable, and delicious. You can takeaway or sit in at their restaurant. After a meal, grab a scoop of artisanal ice cream at Mersii Gelato. Piran is one of the most picturesque towns we have ever visited! It's perfect for a day trip from Ljubljana. · * How to get there: By Car Driving offers a straightforward journey through southwestern Slovenia via the A1 motorway. · The Route: Head southwest out of Ljubljana on the A1 motorway toward Koper. Follow signs for the coast, transition onto expressways H5/H6 near Koper, and then take Route 111 directly into Piran. · Vignette Required: You must purchase a digital toll vignette (e-vinjeta) before entering Slovenian motorways. · Piran Parking Restrictions: Piran's historic old town is a pedestrian-only zone with restricted vehicle access. You must park in designated garages outside the centre (such as Garage Fornače or Garage Arze) and take the free shuttle bus into Tartini Square. 🚌 By Bus (Public or Shared) Buses are highly reliable and run frequently. · Public Intercity Bus: Operated by Arriva Slovenia, direct public buses depart from the Ljubljana Central Bus Station (Avtobusna Postaja) and drop you right at the entrance of Piran. #travel2026 #coastalcharm
