2 Days in Kuching, Malaysia
Kuching is the capital of Sarawak, Malaysia, located on the island of Borneo. This city is often regarded as one of the most relaxed, clean, and friendly cities in Southeast Asia. Unlike the bustling Kuala Lumpur, Kuching offers a harmonious blend of colonial charm, the rich culture of the indigenous Dayak people, and serene modernity along its riverside. Here's a detailed description of what makes Kuching so special in 2026:
1. "City of Cats"
The name "Kuching" literally means cat in Malay. Although the origin of the name is debated (some say it comes from the "Mata Kucing" fruit), the city fully embraces this identity. You will find:
• Giant Cat Statues at various intersections, often dressed in costumes for festive occasions.
• The world's first Cat Museum, housing thousands of cat-related artifacts.
2. Kuching Waterfront & Darul Hana Bridge
The heart of the city's life lies along the Sarawak River. Its waterfront is a 1.3 km-long esplanade that is especially beautiful at dusk.
• Darul Hana Bridge: An artistic "S"-shaped suspension bridge. At night, it lights up with colorful lights and offers a stunning view of the majestic Parliament building (DUN).
• Tambang Boats: You can cross the river using traditional wooden boats to reach Malay villages on the other side for just around RM 1 – RM 2.
3. Gastronomy Paradise (UNESCO City of Gastronomy)
Kuching is officially recognized by UNESCO as a creative city in the field of gastronomy. The food here is a unique blend of flavors found nowhere else:
• Sarawak Laksa: Dubbed by the late Anthony Bourdain as the "Breakfast of the Gods."
• Kolo Mee: Springy noodles with savory seasoning, a staple for locals.
• Sarawak Layer Cake: Colorful layered cakes with intricate geometric patterns.
4. Gateway to Borneo's Natural Adventures
Just a 30–60 minute drive from the city center, you can reach wildlife habitats:
• Bako National Park: Home to Proboscis Monkeys and unique sea rock formations.
• Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre: The best place to see orangutans in a semi-wild habitat.
• Sarawak Cultural Village: A "living museum" at the foot of Mount Santubong, showcasing traditional houses and cultures of Sarawak's indigenous tribes.
5. Inclusive Culture
Kuching is known as the "City of Unity." Here, mosques, Chinese temples (like Tua Pek Kong), and churches stand peacefully side by side. Its community, comprising Malays, Chinese, Iban, Bidayuh, and others, live harmoniously, reflected in their warm hospitality towards visitors.

Urban Oasis View🏙️
Dining by the pool at The Waterfront Hotel Kuching hits different, especially when those Southeast Asian-style towers pop against the cloudy skies 🌧️✨. Seriously, it's the ultimate vibe! You get to soak in an iconic view of Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak—the main spot that lights up Kuching’s skyline. From sunrise to city lights, this is THE place to catch epic scenery from daytime to night.
The whole setup is right inside The Waterfront Hotel Kuching (68 Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg), perched on the top level of Plaza Merdeka shopping mall. So whether you’re just swinging by or having a city staycation, don't sleep on this gem. Snap some pics, treat yourself to a poolside dinner, and enjoy an outdoor cultural landscape that shows off Kuching’s best angles—rain or shine.
Plus, let’s talk about the hotel itself. It's right in the middle of the action, with easy access to Sarawak River, Chinatown, and tons of nearby restaurants and attractions. The rooms are spacious, spotless, and super comfy, with dreamy river views. Staff are all about making you feel welcome—friendly, professional, and always ready to help. Facilities = on point, from the chill pool to a breakfast buffet that’ll have you coming back for seconds. Bonus: it’s connected to a shopping mall and offers free parking (pro tip: check parking details during big events).
So, whether you're a proud Sarawakian or just passing through, don't miss out on experiencing this urban oasis. It’s absolutely beautiful and sooo worth it for the views. Make sure to add The Waterfront Hotel Kuching to your bucket list and turn your evening into something unforgettable!

Local Kuih Finds in Kuching ✨
Tucked not far from Kuching’s Waterfront, Kafe Cangkir makes a welcoming first impression with its warm and relaxed atmosphere. The café has two floors, giving it a comfortable amount of space whether you’re dropping by briefly or settling in for a longer hangout.
The ground floor immediately draws attention with a tempting display of traditional kuih muih, adding a nostalgic local touch to the place. Its cozy setting and casual vibe make it feel approachable, like somewhere you could easily return to more than once during a trip.
Paired with the availability of kuih muih and the overall warm ambiance, Cangkir stands out as a great spot to unwind, enjoy good food, and soak in the local café scene. Whether for a proper meal or a relaxed hangout near the Waterfront, it’s definitely worth a visit!

Waterfront Market Fun🛍️
The Heartbeat of Sarawak: A Visit to Kuching Waterfront
Visiting the Kuching Waterfront was, without a doubt, the highlight of my trip to Sarawak. Stretching along the south bank of the Sarawak River, this esplanade perfectly captures the unique charm of the city—a harmonious blend of history, modernity, and tranquility.
The visual contrast here is stunning. Standing on the promenade, you are treated to a panoramic view of historical sites like the Astana and Fort Margherita on the opposite bank. However, the real showstopper is the New Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building. Its iconic golden roof dominates the skyline, looking majestic during the day and absolutely magical when illuminated at night. I also walked across the Darul Hana Bridge; this winding pedestrian bridge offers the best vantage point for photos and creates a beautiful silhouette against the evening sky.
Beyond the architecture, the atmosphere is what truly captivated me. As the sun began to set, the waterfront came alive. The air filled with the sounds of local buskers and the chatter of families enjoying the cool evening air. I took a ride on a tambang (a traditional wooden water taxi) to cross the river. It was a serene experience, feeling the gentle river breeze while gliding over the water for a very small fare.
Unlike many chaotic tourist hubs, Kuching feels slow-paced and welcoming. It wasn't just a sightseeing spot; it felt like the community's living room. Watching the sunset over the river while sipping a local "Three-Layer Tea" is a memory I will cherish forever. It is a place that truly soothes the soul.
