Inside the island are high and low hills. Legend has it that a group of Arahants were going to pay homage to Phra That Phanom and stayed overnight on Don Kaew Island. One of the Arahants was seriously ill and passed away. The remaining Arahants then cremated him and built a chedi to enshrine the relics. Later, around 11 B.E., a group of people came to Don Kaew and built sandstone sema markers around the chedi and placed them around the Don Kaew area. From the study, it was found that these are Dvaravati-era sema markers. Later, the Lao community migrated from Roi Et and Chaiyaphum to settle in Don Kaew.
