The transit bus is crowded… When transiting Bolivia, the bus only stops for 20 minutes to cross the border. Many people can’t rush because of visa issues, so the company just drops the passenger’s luggage on the side of the road and drives away! 😱 There are also passengers who left their luggage on the car because they did not know that the bus had left, and could not find it afterwards. The cable car has color-coded routes (blue, white, light blue, red, etc.), and if you ride the purple line, you'll see the view shown in the photo. The night view was particularly beautiful, surrounded by 360 degrees of light. The views vary depending on the route, so that's something to enjoy, too. Each route is reasonably priced at 3Bs, so be sure to try both day and night. The stations are color-coded to match the route, making them easy to identify. My second recommendation is The Witches Market (Mercado de las Brujas) 🧙♀️ This street is lined with souvenir shops. It's a great place to shop for souvenirs, with some strange items like stuffed llamas and witch merchandise. ✨

Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) 🌝 is located on the southern side of La Paz, Bolivia. It takes about 30 minutes by minibus from the city center to get there. This area features unique rock formations created by the erosion of soil and rocks due to rain and wind. Up close, it looks as if layers of mud are stacked upon each other. The name 'Moon Valley' is said to have originated from astronaut Neil Armstrong, who visited the site in 1969 and remarked that the landscape resembled the surface of the moon. The entrance fee is 20 Bs. It took me about an hour to explore, but for those with limited time, there is also a shortcut course available 🙆♀️

This trip was such a wonderful surprise! You get to see the desert, Martian landscapes, salt flats, geysers, and starry skies all in one go✨ We stayed in the town of San Pedro for three days and booked five classic tours (in Spanish + English), all with the same company called Layana Travel. Before each tour, the guide creates a WhatsApp group to coordinate details and hotel pickups. Usually, the return drop-off is on the main street. 💡 For this company, we paid 50% upfront and the rest before the first tour. No discounts for card or online payments, but paying in cash (Chilean pesos) or local card transfers gets you a 10% discount. Since the amount was large, we still used a card💳 There are many travel agencies in town, and prices are pretty similar. La Paz is the highest major city on earth, at 3650 m above sea level and its El Alto area at 4150 m. This elevation and steep slopes used to make exploring the city a very tiring affair. Fortunately, nowadays we can experience this metropolis from the comfort of the Mi Teleférico, a network of cable cars 🚡 with 26 stations all over the city. You can make a city round trip only using hopping from one line to the next. 💜 Starting from the city centre in the valley get on Línea Morada at Utawi station and be carried up the steep valley to Tiquira station. 🩶 There take Línea Plateada for one stop to Qhana Pata station; get out here for the viewpoint (mirador). 💛 Línea Amarilla takes you back down into the valley and over the neighborhood of Sopocachai. Take a brake here for wandering around and having food. Continue to Chuqui Apu station. 🩵 Only one stop on Línea Celeste takes you to Arce stations and gives you cool views of active football and basketball courts nestled between the buildings. 🤍 Continue on Línea Blanca through the canyon oof high buildings of Miraflores neighborhoods. 🧡 At the terminal Inalmama station transfer to Lane Naranja, which takes you back down. This north-western end of the valley was described to me as a little dangerous for tourists, so maybe stay inside once you arrive at Taypi Uta station. ❤️ Get your camera ready before getting on Línea Roja because it takes you over the colorful neighborhood of Chualluma and brings you to station 16 de Julio, which has it’s own viewpoint (mirador). 🚡 It’s one stop on Línea Plateada along the edge of El Alto back to Tiquira station and then one more back down to Utjaywi on Línea Morada. 💶 Each time you get on a line, you pay Bs 3, which is less than 40 Euro cents. Large luggage also costs Bs 3 to bring. La Paz is the god of cable cars, it's so cool. 🚡 Because of the high altitude, ground transportation isn't convenient, so the whole city is connected by cable cars. The person who invented cable car transportation is a genius. I stayed at the Atix Hotel, located in the wealthy Calacoto district. The hotel facilities are relatively new and well-designed. The downside is that it's far from the airport, about 100 BOB by taxi. 🏨 There are many hotels in the city center, but the conditions are worse. A 5–10 minute walk from the hotel takes you to the terminal station of the Green Line cable car. Going to the city center (including the Witches' Market and the San Francisco Basilica) is very simple and convenient. Take the Green Line, transfer to the Blue Line, and go straight to the last stop. If you're unsure, use Google Maps; it's very accurate. For currency exchange, I recommend going to the Basilica. After getting off the Blue Line, navigate for about 10 minutes, and you'll find small stalls with women sitting in the middle. Any of them will do... Bolivians are very straightforward in business, and the prices are the same. 💲 The official USD exchange rate is 1:6; hotels and Uyuni basically use 1:8; the women near the Basilica offer 1:11. I exchanged 100 USD for 1,123 BOB. After exchanging money, walk along the small road, and you'll immediately reach the Witches' Market. I didn't see any witches, just souvenirs like fridge magnets and shawls (you can haggle a little, but they're generally not willing to budge much). 🦙 After that, there's not much to do... You can walk a bit and navigate to the Purple Line to continue taking the cable car. The Purple, Red, Yellow, and Green lines are the most beautiful, offering a top-down view of La Paz. At sunset, I recommend going to the intersection station of the Yellow and Gray lines to eat at the legendary highest-altitude fried chicken restaurant. The view outside the window is very nice. The food is decent, and you can order by clicking pictures on a machine, so you can eat even if you don't speak Spanish. Credit cards are accepted. If you plan to take many cable car rides, buy a transportation card, as their ticketing rules aren't very smart. You can only transfer twice before having to buy another ticket. The transportation card costs 30 BOB, with 15 BOB pre-loaded for cable car rides. Just swipe the card to enter, and recharge it when needed. Just give them the money, no need for conversation... An introvert's dream. For night views, go to the Kili Kili platform. You'll need to climb a few steep slopes, not friendly for altitude sickness... But Bolivia is quite safe at night.
