The Laiyang pear was developed in Laiyang City because of the area’s unique climatic and soil conditions. Today Laiyang is known as “the Pear Capital of China.” Laiyang is also known as “China’s dinosaur capital” because the first dinosaur fossil discovered in China since the founding of the PRC was unearthed here. In ancient times, Laiyang was recognized as “the capital of ink painting and calligraphy.” It is also the birthplace of the Quanzhen School (“All Truth Religion” or “Way of Completeness and Truth”) of Taoism and is renowned as a “homeland of Taoism.” Laiyang is also the birthplace of the “Praying Mantis Fist” style of kung fu, one of China’s national intangible cultural heritages.
