Samaná (city) is the peninsula's capital and the starting point for all expeditions. Here, you can simply stroll along the promenade and sample the freshest seafood. On its outskirts is Puente Samaná, a simple bridge nicknamed the "Bridge to Nowhere," offering excellent views. Nearby is the small beach of Playa Cayacoa. Cayo Levantado is the famous islet featured in Bacardi advertisements. White sand, palm trees, and turquoise water. Las Galeras is the area at the eastern tip of the peninsula with the wildest nature. Within the Cabo Samaná Natural Monument are the famous Boca del Diablo hole in the rocks, where waves roar like a fountain; the old Mina de Mármol Las Galeras (a flooded marble quarry); and the pearl beaches of Playa Madama and Playa Frontón (both require a hike or boat ride). Further east, there are equally beautiful beaches: Boca Chiquita (a small, secluded cove), the long Playa Delgado, the picturesque Playa del Aserradero with dark sand and palm trees, as well as beaches for surfers and wave lovers—Playa Grande and Playa Colorado. Along the coast, there are other hidden gems: Playa Escondida (which lives up to its name) and the picturesque cove Playa El Caletón. Rounding out the list of attractions near Las Galeras is the Cueva Duarte cave complex, with its magnificent underground chambers and stalactites. El Limon Natural Park's star attraction is Salto El Limón, a 55-meter waterfall cascading into a jungle basin. To reach it, you'll have to trek through tropical vegetation. Along the way, you can see Cascada Pequeña (a small cascade) and take a dip in Río El Limón. North of El Limón, there's a strip of wild beaches (in my opinion, the best in the country). The most famous are Playa Hermitano and Playa Hermitano II (secluded coves for those seeking peace), as well as Playa Las Canas, a long beach with dark volcanic sand and powerful waves, popular with surfers. Las Terrenas is a former fishing village, now a hub for surfers and European hipsters. Beaches: Playa Las Ballenas is the most popular and ideal for surfing. Playa Bonita is more laid-back and picturesque. Fewer people and more relaxation. Playa Cosón is a wild beach with coconut plantations. A paradise for horseback riding and kitesurfing.
