Stunning narure reserve - Pennington Flash
Pennington Flash, a legacy of Lancashire's proud industrial heritage, Pennington Flash is now rightly recognised as a national treasure and a stunning example of nature in recovery.
This beloved beauty spot is one of eight local sites that make up The Flashes of Wigan and Leigh; the first and only National Nature Reserve (NNR) in the whole of Greater Manchester.
Officially designated an NNR by Natural England in October 2022 in recognition of their remarkable natural beauty and immense ecological importance, these precious wetland habitats were originally and uniquely formed by the ‘flash’ flooding of former coal mining sites.
Pennington Flash is a favourite with visitors from far and wide, with stunning natural views, bird hides, trails for walking and cycling, a visitor centre and café, and an exciting adventure playground for families.
The site is also home to Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club which is a vibrant and welcoming sailing community, offering a range of activities including sailing lessons, racing, canoeing, and open water swimming.
Swim Pennington, a NOWCA registered open water swim venue. The site is perfect for open water swimming, offering simple access to the water, ample free parking and changing rooms with toilets and shower facilities. Sessions run every Saturday morning throughout the year, with evening sessions available from late April to the end of September, open to skins or wetsuits, whether it's a quick dip or a 3.5km swim.
