Wat Phra Phutthabat Huai Tom, Li District, Lamphun Province
After navigating countless winding curves into Li District, you'll discover a grand temple nestled within a Karen community. It’s an incredibly serene and shaded sanctuary.
The temple grounds are home to several stunningly beautiful pavilions,
flawlessly blending a variety of architectural styles and featuring impeccably preserved murals.

A Rare Sight: Unseen Lamphun, Once in Over a Decade.
Amazing Unseen Lamphun ✨
Taking you on a 1-day trip to Li District, Lamphun Province. The mysterious town of Li features beautiful, hidden natural attractions that are incredibly rare and unlike anywhere else. I highly recommend visiting at least once in your lifetime!
01 Ban Kao Temple Ruins
A newly emerged unseen sunken temple, an incredibly rare sight that happens only once in over 10 years. Normally, this old abandoned temple is neither submerged nor flooded. However, due to heavy rains and high water levels in 2025, the temple was completely flooded. Then, in early February 2026, the water levels began to drop, revealing the emerging temple and creating this breathtaking unseen scenery. Currently, the water continues to gradually recede.
02 Ko Luang Waterfall
An emerald-blue waterfall cascading down a 20-meter-high limestone cliff across 7 tiers. At the bottom lies a large pool, over 10 meters deep, showcasing a vibrant emerald-blue color. The water is crystal clear and cool, swimming with tiny fishes. There are stunning photo spots both at the top and by the rocks down below. Swimming is not allowed here, but you can swim at Tat Sado Waterfall, located just below Ko Luang Waterfall. From the parking lot, it's a 500-meter walk along a slightly steep path.
03 Wat Mahathat Chedi Si Wiang Chai
A Lanna-style Buddhist architectural masterpiece built entirely of laterite, making it the largest of its kind in Thailand.
It strongly resembles the Shwedagon Pagoda. This Lanna-style architecture is constructed entirely from laterite and was initiated by Luang Pu Khruba Chaiya Wongsa Phatthana to serve as a Buddhist stupa dedicated to the Five Buddhas. It is the first place in Thailand, and the second in the world, where people can come to pay their respects.

Pay Respects to the Sweet-Eyed Reclining Buddha at Wat Phra Phutthabat Pha Nam.
🏘 Wat Phra Phutthabat Pha Nam was once an abandoned temple, surrounded by a desolate forest with nothing but ruins. Later, Phra Khruba Apichai Khao Pi, a devoted disciple of Khruba Srivichai, joined forces with the Pha Nam villagers—who had evacuated to escape the Bhumibol Dam floods—to restore the temple.
🧱 The temple grounds are located at the base, while the majestic pagodas sit at the top. At the foot of Doi Pha Nam mountain, you'll find a massive stucco statue of Khruba Apichai Khao Pi dressed in traditional white ascetic robes. There is also a pavilion (Mondop) housing his pristine remains, allowing Buddhists to come and pay their respects.
🙏🏽 Every year on March 3rd, a sacred tradition is held to change the robes covering his preserved body.
⛰ To reach the top of Doi Pha Nam, visitors can climb the 432-step Naga staircase. At the summit, there are two stunning pagodas—the Golden Pagoda and the Silver Pagoda—connected by a walkway known as the "Bridge of Merit" (Saphan Bun Charuek).
🙏🏽 The peak also features a pavilion enshrining a sacred Buddha footprint, a holy water well, a beautiful replica of Myanmar's Sweet-Eyed Reclining Buddha, and several other significant Buddha statues, including Phra Chao Tan Jai, Phra Thammaraja Sammasambuddha, Phra Buddha Arunroj, and Phra Buddha Metta.

Hidden "Underwater Ancient Temple" in Northern Thailand Revealed! Open Only Until February
Recently, another low-key yet stunning destination in Northern Thailand has gone viral on social media. The "Underwater Ancient Temple" in Mae Ping National Park, Lamphun Province, has entered its best viewing period. As the water level has not fully receded, the ancient temple ruins and a massive rain tree quietly stand above the surface of the Mae Ping River, creating a mysterious scene. This is not a man-made attraction but a piece of submerged history.
A Village and Ancient Temple Submerged by Water
This area is located around Ko Kha District in Lamphun Province. Before the construction of the Bhumibol Dam in 1955, this was a densely populated riverside community. The village had temples, residences, and ferry crossings, representing a typical lifestyle along the Mae Ping River basin.
After the dam was built, the water level rose, and villagers gradually relocated to higher ground.
What remains are:
· Ruins of the ancient temple;
· Old bricks and wall remnants;
· Buddha statues;
· A huge rain tree standing in the water.
Locals call this abandoned temple the "Old Temple."
The Hometown of a Lanna High Monk
This ancient temple is not only a ruin but also holds spiritual significance. It is the birthplace temple of the revered Lanna monk, Luang Pu Kruba Ongsa.
Every April, when the water level drops further, a traditional "Water Blessing Ceremony for the Old Temple" is held locally, attracting devotees from various places.
In 2017, devotees restored and tidied up the site.
Therefore, this place is also known as the "Lanna Holy Land Submerged in Water."
Why Is It Worth Visiting Now?
Mae Ping National Park, in cooperation with the Ko Kha Town Government, is offering limited-time boat tours. Visitors can take a boat into the center of the water area to closely observe:
· The giant rain tree in the water;
· The ancient temple wall ruins;
· Reflections of riverside forests and hills;
· The tranquil scenery of the Mae Ping River.
This sight cannot be seen year-round.
The opening period entirely depends on the dam's water level.
Currently, it is expected to be open only until the end of February.
After that, with changes in water level, this scene may not be visible again until the following year.
Tour Information
Boarding Location: Mae Ping National Park Pier
Fee: Individual 150 THB; Group (up to 10 people) 1000 THB
Some landscapes are sculpted by nature and time together. Some places hold history beneath the water's surface. This time, the water level is just right.

Red Cliff, Mae Ping National Park
"Hikers don't seek comfort... but the meaning of the journey." 🌿🌄
Pha Daeng Luang, or Pha Daeng Luang Viewpoint, is located in Mae Ping National Park, Li District, Lamphun Province. This steep cliff stands alongside the winding Ping River, nestled among the valleys. Its beauty has earned it the nickname 'Switzerland of Thailand.' However, such beauty requires care, as the area is only open to visitors for a few months each year, and you must contact the park authorities before visiting. Pha Daeng Luang is considered one of the most stunning viewpoints in Thailand. The sight of the sun rising behind the mountains, casting soft rays on the water's surface, combined with the mist floating below between the mountains and the Ping River, creates an unforgettable scene that leaves a lasting impression.
The challenging and distant trail teaches us more about nature and ourselves than we might expect. Every step along the ridge and every breath in the forest is a valuable experience and a reason why we fall in love with exploring nature.

Pay Homage to the Relics at Wat Phra That Ha Duang.
🏘 Wat Phra That Ha Duang, or Wiang Chedi Ha Lang, is believed to be situated on the site of the ancient city of Wiang Li, as evidenced by the remains of an old city wall and a moat aligned in the area.
🧱 Also commonly known as Wat Doi Wiang, the temple was founded in 1975. Legend has it that Queen Chamadevi, the ruler of Hariphunchai, heard that five glowing crystal spheres frequently appeared in the city of Li. She traveled there and witnessed the radiant light of the five spheres floating above five mounds of earth. Filled with devotion, she ordered the construction of five pagodas to cover each of the mounds.
Other highlights within the temple include:
🏠 The Ubosot (Ordination Hall): Enshrines the principal Buddha image, Somdej Ong Pathom, adorned in the majestic attire of a Great Emperor. The hall also features beautiful mural paintings depicting the life of the Buddha and the history of the five pagodas.
🏚 Phra Viharn Chaloem Thewi: A large hall with double-layered walls made of laterite and brick. Behind the hall, there are three standing Buddha images in the contemplative posture.
⛺ Phra Viharn Somdej Ong Pathom: A cross-shaped (Chaturamuk) pavilion enshrining the Phra Phuttha Sikhi Thotsaphon Yana No. 1 (Somdej Ong Pathom) Buddha image.
🏠 Viharn Kao Kruba (Hall of the Nine Venerable Monks): Enshrines statues of the revered monks who led the restoration of Wat Phra That Ha Duang.
🛕 On April 20th of every year, the temple hosts a traditional water-pouring ceremony to bathe the holy relics.
