From April to October, 8 worry-free and fun reverse travel destinations
Don’t just focus on popular big cities. The truly budget-friendly and enjoyable places are often hidden in the “heard of but never visited” spots.
From April to October, these 8 cities each have their own highlights: some are great for water views, some for wandering old streets, and others are perfect for refreshing your love of natural scenery.
High-speed train rides range from 2 to 8 hours, offering four completely different travel experiences: local life, wild charm, artsy vibes, and ancient traditions.
01 Shizuishan | Ningxia
Here’s the bottom line: if you want to see desert and lake in one frame, Sha Lake is worth spending half a day.
📍 Take a boat or walk the water boardwalk from the park entrance. The reeds rustle in the wind, and distant sand dunes look like a golden border.
⏰ The most comfortable times are before 9 AM or after 4 PM. The midday sun is harsh, and the lakeside wind can be strong, so hats and sun-protective clothing are more practical than stylish outfits. You don’t need to buy all water activities; a regular boat ride plus walking is enough to see the main sights.
For meals, head back to Shizuishan city center, where hand-pulled lamb and lamb offal dishes have a homely feel.
⚠️ Sha Lake park covers a large area. If traveling with seniors, don’t try to cover it all at once. Check shuttle arrangements in advance. Tickets and boat fares follow the official daily announcements.
02 Zibo | Shandong
Zibo is more than just barbecue. Zhoucun ancient market is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll.
📍 Enter from the main street entrance. The ground is paved with blue bricks, wooden doors line up side by side. First, check out the ticket offices and silk workshops, then turn into the alleys to find food.
🍜 Zhoucun sesame cakes are best eaten hot. They’re thin and crispy, breaking with a snap, and pair well with tofu pudding or side dishes. They’re more reliable than waiting two hours in line at trendy spots. After 3 PM, there are fewer tourists, and when the shops light up, the warm tones of the old street make for better photos.
If you only have half a day, follow the route “Main Street – Silk Market Street – Dry Wharf.”
⚠️ Many shops in the ancient market close at different times, so don’t leave shopping for the evening. To quietly photograph the archway, avoid weekend afternoons. The east gate area is usually more crowded.
03 Zhangye | Gansu
Zhangye is best enjoyed by separating nature and ancient architecture. Don’t cram four spots into one day.
📍 Visit the colorful Danxia landform in the morning. The sunlight hits the mountains at an angle, layering orange, yellow, and brown hues. The north and west gates have different routes, so check sightseeing bus arrangements before entering.
⏰ In the afternoon, return to the city to visit Zhangye Great Buddha Temple. The wooden halls are close to the city streets, so it’s an easy walk. Lixian ancient city is better for those interested in old city layouts. If you only have two days, I’d put it as a secondary choice.
Matixi Temple requires half a day on its own. The mountain paths and steps are more tiring than city attractions.
🚄 Plan your travel in advance between Zhangye West Station, the city, and Danxia. Renting a car or carpooling saves hassle.
⚠️ The Danxia area has strong sunlight. Shooting the mountains at noon can cause overexposure. Hats, water, and non-slip shoes are more important than a tripod.
04 Changsha | Hunan
Changsha has a high density of attractions, but don’t try to squeeze Tianxin Pavilion, Yuelu Mountain, the Provincial Museum, and Huaminglou into one day.
📍 Visit Tianxin Pavilion in the morning. The area around the city tower has plenty of shade, perfect for slowing down your pace. At noon, try stinky tofu and sugar oil cakes near Pozi Street. If the line is too long, move on—there are plenty of other snacks in Changsha.
In the afternoon, choose one: if you want to hike and see the city, go to Yuelu Mountain. Enter from the east gate and exit from the south gate for a smoother route. If you prefer a quiet exhibition, visit the Provincial Museum. ⚠️ Check official announcements for opening days and reservation rules to avoid disappointment.
Huaminglou is best scheduled for half a day on its own, as it’s not on the way to other city attractions.
⏰ After 5 PM, the light on Yuelu Mountain softens. If you enjoy photographing tree shadows and city views, you can descend later. For families with children or seniors, the Provincial Museum is much easier than continuous uphill walking.
05 Bijie | Guizhou
Bijie is not about rushing through. Save your energy for Zhijin Cave.
📍 Inside the cave, stalagmites and stalactites unfold along the way. Lights shine on the rock walls, and the floor is damp, so regular sneakers are more reliable than thick-soled sandals. The walk is long, so check seniors’ health before visiting.
Baili Rhododendron is seasonal. Spring is the peak bloom, when the hills look like colorful carpets. If you miss the bloom, you can still enjoy the forest, but don’t expect a sea of flowers.
⏰ Try to arrive early in March and April. The park entrance and sightseeing bus stops get busy.
🚄 Public transport between the two spots is not convenient for last-minute trips. Renting a car or driving yourself saves time.
⚠️ There’s a big temperature difference inside and outside Zhijin Cave. Even in summer, bring a light jacket. Tickets, sightseeing buses, and bloom information follow official daily announcements.
06 Baoshan | Yunnan
Baoshan is for slowing down. Around Tengchong, don’t rush through just to check off spots.
📍 Visit Yunfeng Mountain in the morning. The mountain paths and steps take energy, so if you want an easier day, make it a half-day trip and don’t add distant spots.
In the afternoon, stroll through Heshun Ancient Town. Walk along Shuanghong Bridge and Cun’s Ancestral Hall. Water channels run alongside alleys, and wooden doors and stone walls feel very lived-in.
🍜 For lunch, try local rice noodles or thin bean jelly. Don’t just grab a bowl at the park entrance.
Beihai Wetland is best on sunny days to see grass rows and water surfaces. Tengchong Volcano Hot Springs are better for soaking and relaxing.
⏰ After rain, the wetland colors are clearer, but shoe soles can be slippery.
⚠️ Yunfeng Mountain, Heshun Ancient Town, and the volcano hot springs are in different directions. If your trip is under three days, skip one to avoid rushing.
07 Longyan | Fujian
Longyan is great for seeing tulou, wandering the old city, and leaving some time for the mountains.
📍 Arrive early at the tulou (Yongding). The round tulou’s outer walls show clearer layers in morning light. Don’t just photograph the entrance; walk the inner circle to understand the communal spaces and living layout.
Changting ancient city is perfect for a slow evening walk. Follow the Ting River to Diantou Street. When the old street lights come on, the stone paths feel more alive than during the day. Guanzhaishan requires hiking. ⏰ Start in the morning for cooler weather. After rain, mountain paths are slippery, so shoes must have good tread.
The Longyan city center can serve as a base for lodging and supplies. Don’t treat it as a standalone attraction to rush through.
🍜 Local snacks to try include taro buns and clear soup noodles, which have a heartier flavor than coastal cities.
⚠️ Yongding tulou and Guanzhaishan are spread out. To avoid too much travel, stay in one area instead of commuting daily.
08 Hengshui | Hebei
Hengshui is best for slowing down. Don’t just take a photo by Hengshui Lake and leave.
📍 Early morning, watch the lake surface. Water birds are active near the reeds. When the wind blows, the sparkling water shimmers continuously. To save energy, prioritize a boat or sightseeing bus, then walk a section.
⏰ After 4 PM is ideal for sunset photos. The lake shore is wide, and backlighting makes the reed edges glow. Spring and fall are windy, so a light jacket is necessary. In summer, avoid midday when the lakeside has no shade and the sun is direct.
🚄 From Hengshui North Station to Hengshui Lake, you’ll need to connect with city transport. Check routes in advance rather than hailing a taxi on arrival. Dining options around the lake are less concentrated than downtown, so bring water and simple snacks during the day.
⚠️ Some lake areas open seasonally. Follow official daily announcements.
These 8 cities don’t follow a single template: Shizuishan offers desert and lake views, Zhangye showcases landforms, Bijie and Baoshan focus on mountains and water.
If you want to save money and relax, start with Zibo and Hengshui. To maximize scenery, consider Zhangye and Bijie.
