Originally, I had planned a trip to ski in Switzerland, but I changed my plans after hearing that the opening of Swiss ski resorts was being delayed due to global warming. That is how I found Scholden, a small town in the Ötztal region to the right of Switzerland. It is said to be a popular ski paradise for Europeans, boasting three peaks over 3,000 meters high. I picked up a rental car at Zurich Airport and drove about 280 km, taking around three and a half hours. On the way, I stopped in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, for lunch—schnitzel and fried rice—and found that eating out was incredibly expensive. Before crossing into Austria, you must purchase a vignette at a gas station or convenience store near the border. After passing through the Alpine roads that felt like crossing the Daegwallyeong Pass, I arrived at an accommodation that was like a chalet in Switzerland. The view of the Alps from the second floor was absolutely insane. It was the first time I had seen accommodation with a ski rack right at the entrance to the shoe locker area. Since the houses are located halfway up the mountain, there are free mini-lifts here and there; you ride them by pressing a button, just like an elevator. Thanks to the view from the lift, the entire village felt like a ski resort. Since it was Sunday, most restaurants were closed, so I went grocery shopping at a supermarket and unwinded from the journey with frozen pizza and wine. The Schlossweg (Castle Trail) is 3 km loop, 1.5 hrs, +120 m, from Vaduz post office up through vineyard terraces then mixed forest — beech, sycamore, spruce — where Sphagnum pads the seep by the Red House (Rotes Haus) and Racomitrium drapes the castle cliff shade. No entry fee, no permit. I flew into Zurich, train to Sargans, LIEmobil bus 21 to Vaduz (25 min, €4.20 tap card), walked up at 7:30 a.m. in June. The lower vineyard is sunny; the mossy half is the 400 m of forest switchback above the vineyard edge where the Rhine fog sits until 8 and the castle wall goes green-black on its north face. The castle courtyard is out of bounds (prince lives there), but the forest bench 50 m below the wall gives the standard Vaduz-postcard shot.
