Entry: ~R10–30 pp, R20/car, R50/trailer, camping ~R50/site — cash at the Serala office, often unmanned, leave the money in the honesty box and take a receipt slip. No card, no card machine, no shop. The mossy cycad forest is the Wonderwoud (Wonder Forest) loop off the Mohlapitse River trail — Encephalartos transvenosus (Transvaal cycad, ~600 plants, some 4 m trunk) grows under 600-year Podocarpus falcatus yellowwoods, and Sphagnum lines the seep where the forest floor stays shaded year-round. I went in March (late summer, after rain) — forest 19°C, river 14°C, moss dripping by 9 a.m. Wore leather boots with gaiters; the Mohlapitse crossing is ankle-deep, the forest floor is root-mud. Mistake: I drove in after a January thunderstorm — the 40 km dirt became a washing-board of ruts, a 2×4 would have cracked an oil pan. Go April–Sept. Second mistake: I didn't bring 200 ZAR small notes — the office was closed, the honor box needed exact change, no one to break a 200. Third: I touched a cycad cone for a photo — a returning hiker (retired ranger) said "that's 200 years of growth, don't oil it with your hand" — cycad pollen/cones are protected, E. transvenosus is CITES Appendix I, fines are real. Buy in Tzaneen: a 30 ZAR bolla (vetkoek) and 15 ZAR coke at the Spar, not the 180 ZAR Haenertsburg café. Gear: a 400 ZAR pair of gaiters from the Joburg outdoor shop — Wolkberg mud is legendary. Local rule: no drones, no cutting yellowwood or cycad (both protected, 10,000 ZAR+ fine), no fire outside the Klipdraai braai grid, sign the mountain register at the office even if unmanned. The moss under the cycads is the forest's memory — step on the cut line, not the green. Opinion: Wolkberg is one of 3 proclaimed wilderness areas in SA and almost no international hikers go. Should LEDET put a 100 ZAR trail fee + 2 rangers on the Wonderwoud loop to stop cycad-poaching, or keep the honor-box model? I'd ranger it. After flying from Zhengzhou to Johannesburg, South Africa via Shenzhen, I went directly from winter to summer, and then drove all the way to Musina. This is a border town located at the junction of South Africa 🇿🇦 and Zimbabwe 🇿🇼, and it is also the place where I worked in Africa for the first time in 2016 and stayed for more than half a year. After many years, I returned to this place and still felt familiar and emotional. I happened to stay at the Lifestyle Hotel again. When I first came to work here in 2016, I lived here for several months. Most of my friends in China will feel that Africa lacks water, but in fact, it is a generalization. In slightly better hotels in Africa, swimming pools are a must, and a large number of flowers, plants and trees will be planted. South Africa was previously considered a developed country, but in recent years it has been declining, development has stagnated, and there is even a shortage of electricity. There is a scheduled power outage every night here, so the hotel has specially equipped a generator. The weather is hot, so air conditioning is a must.
