Linfen, as part of my 7-day trip covering Linfen and Jinzhong, I planned to stay here for two days and would like to share my experience from these two days. First, the key points: personally, I think the following attractions are not worth visiting and have pitfalls to avoid: 1. Hongtong Great Locust Tree + Ming Dynasty Prison, Yao Temple. The current buildings are mainly symbolic. Although there are some historical remnants, there is little to see, and it looks much like the pictures online. 2. Huamen. It’s just big, with exhibitions of some historical and mythical figures’ statues. The 5th-floor terrace offers a good view. 3. Famous local food, beef meatball noodles, is really spicy! Detailed itinerary as follows: Day 1: One-day tour in Linfen city 1. Taosi Ruins, a Shanxi Cultural Tourism Annual Card attraction, free of charge. There is a lack of physical exhibits; visiting Linfen Museum is sufficient. It’s far from the city center, so it’s okay to skip. 2. Linfen Museum, free. Very impressive! I didn’t expect a city-level museum to be this good! Rich exhibits and well-curated displays. It provides a great understanding of Taosi and Jin Kingdom history. The introduction to local opera in Linfen is also very interesting. 3. Fenhe Park, adjacent to the museum, you can take a walk along the Fen River. At the Xiguan Overpass intersection, there is a section of ancient city wall that you can climb for free. There are also several popular photo spots under the wall. 4. Dayun Temple (Iron Buddha Temple), free. The giant Buddha head is stunning, and the glazed pagoda is beautiful. There are also small exhibitions of shadow puppetry and paper-cutting, which are quite special. 5. Drum Tower, not far from Dayun Temple, but not much to see. 6. Yao Temple, free with the Cultural Tourism Annual Card. Dedicated to Emperors Yao, Shun, and Yu. Although it has the world’s largest drum, ancient cypress trees, and Ming Dynasty clay sculptures, there isn’t much to see. 7. Source of Chinese Civilization, free. Passed by on the way from Yao Temple to Huamen. A huge three-dimensional map of China where you can find your hometown. Quite interesting. 8. Huamen, a Cultural Tourism Annual Card attraction. It’s really big, just big. Although there are stories about the number of steps, it’s more about form than substance, lacking content. 9. Watched a movie at a cinema included in the Cultural Tourism Annual Card. Stayed in Linfen for 2 nights and watched two movies, both private screenings. It somewhat made up for the cost of the annual card. 10. According to guides, Huamen and Drum Tower are beautifully lit at night, so I rode a shared electric bike around. The Drum Tower was standard, and nearby Gongyuan Street and South Sports Road were quite lively with many street vendors. The lighting at Huamen seemed a bit odd, and the surroundings were still very quiet. Day 2: Xiaoxitian + Hukou Waterfall + Guangsheng Temple, one-day tour Some famous tourist spots in Linfen are quite scattered, making self-guided tours time-consuming. After planning, I found joining a tour group more convenient. Xiaoxitian: Cultural Tourism Annual Card attraction. Guangsheng Temple: Cultural Tourism Annual Card attraction. Hukou Waterfall: free in the off-season. A fantastic day! No need to say much about these three spots, just go for it. Passing through Huangtu County on the way, you can also experience the loess plateau landscape and cave dwellings. Day 3: Hongtong Hongtong Great Locust Tree + Ming Dynasty Prison, both Shanxi Cultural Tourism Annual Card attractions, free. A boring day trip. Finally, a summary: 1. Linfen has some other attractions, but they are too scattered and lack connection, not suitable for self-guided tours, so I didn’t visit them. 2. Two days are enough for Linfen tourism. One day in the city: museum - stroll along Fen River - ancient city ruins - Iron Buddha Temple; families with kids can visit Nezha Legend. On the second day, join a one-day tour. 3. Please, those introducing Linfen cuisine, stop recommending beef meatball noodles, it’s really too spicy!

Our first proper meal of the trip was in Linfen! [Cute] 🖼Restaurant Atmosphere: A small street-side restaurant, right next to the Bell and Drum Tower roundabout. It's a small shop with outdoor seating, offering views of the Drum Tower at night. The shop next door was empty, but this place was almost full for dinner – super popular! ✅Must-Try: The braised pork noodles are their signature dish. The portion of braised pork is generous, and the noodles are very chewy. The spicy beef offal noodles are also good, but I personally prefer the beef offal noodles; they have a more home-style flavor and taste even better with vinegar 😋. They also have cold dishes and side dishes. Shanxi truly lives up to its reputation as a high-carb province; even the side dishes are mostly cold noodles and rice noodles. 💰Average Price: The prices are really reasonable, attracting many local residents.

In Dongyang Village, Yaodu District, Linfen, I touched with my own hands a genuine Yuan Dynasty stage! It is not only one of the seven surviving Yuan Dynasty stages nationwide but was also recognized in 2020 as a national exemplary restoration case. Visitors here are so few that you almost have the place to yourself, and admission is free, but whether you can enter really depends on fate! The Yuan Dynasty Bagua Stage in the Spotlight As soon as you enter the temple gate, your eyes will be locked on it! This stage, built in the fifth year of the Zhizheng era of the Yuan Dynasty (1345), stands about 13 meters tall, majestically perched on a brick and stone platform. Ming Dynasty Polychrome Sculptures and the "Dashun Kingdom" Stele The Houtu Holy Mother Hall was rebuilt in the second year of the Ming Tianqi era (1622), preserving Ming Dynasty polychrome sculptures inside. There is also a "hidden gem" stele—the "Record of the Houtu Divine Palace," dated to the "First Year of Yongchang of the Dashun Kingdom" (1644), the year Li Zicheng declared himself emperor.
