"What is there to do?!" - you'll hear this from locals if you decide to visit the most popular and closest village to Lake Baikal (60 km away). Indeed, the beauty of Baikal is explored in other places, but if you're a tourist, this guide will help you. What to bring: plenty of warm clothes, mittens, a scarf, hot tea, and pies (otherwise, you're not a local). Travel from the bus station in Irkutsk to Listvyanka Village. Tickets cost around 400 rubles. Alternatively, take a car and stop at locations along the way: the sable farm in Bolshaya Rechka Village, where you can see live sables, mink, and exclusive fur products. A sable fur coat is considered the most expensive in the world! On the way, visit the Taltsy Museum of Wooden Architecture. It features several streets of wooden houses from the Tsar's era, complete with antique furniture and mannequins. It's best to visit during Maslenitsa or the jazz festival when all the houses are open and lively. You'll also pass the "Looking Glass" Museum of Wooden Sculptures, which has a beautiful restaurant and interesting sculptures. Tickets are affordable. Listvyanka is the closest settlement on Lake Baikal to Irkutsk. If you're passing through Irkutsk or have little time but want to see Baikal, this is the place to go. An hour's drive along a very good and scenic road takes you to the greatest lake on earth. Many people probably know Listvyanka, but few know that you can travel from Listvyanka to Port Baikal, which is very beautiful and not overly touristy. You'll see a section of the Circum-Baikal Railway, a Baikal water extraction plant, wooden churches, and breathtaking views of Lake Baikal from above. The ferry ride itself is like a walk, and the ticket costs only 90 rubles. You can find the schedule on the East Siberian Shipping Company website, and tickets can be purchased upon boarding the ferry with cash or a credit card. During the crossing, you'll be accompanied by seagulls, and you'll see picturesque Listvyanka from the water. Upon arrival, it's best to immediately turn left and follow the tracks to the beginning of the wooden staircase. Climb up the stairs. You'll see a small wooden church, and you'll likely hear the ringing of bells. The priest allows tourists to climb the bell tower and ring the bells. The church is new, built with donations. From this vantage point, there are beautiful views of the lake. Such peace and grace! Then follow the wooded path past the church, following the signs to the white stone. Along the way, you'll see a gazebo. From the gazebo, a discreet path leads down a few meters to an ancient iron lighthouse. Climbing it is dangerous, but everyone still climbs. This is a real lighthouse, and it used to guide ships! It's no longer in use. After the lighthouse, you'll reach a rock—this is Cape Port Baikal—from where you can see the source of the Angara River, the shore of Listyanka, and, of course, Lake Baikal itself. Bring something to eat. Or, after getting off the ferry, you can buy some hot-smoked omul and a flatbread at the local shop and eat it all at the summit. On the way back, you can stop by the museum (if it's open) of the remarkable Russian writer Vampilov and see his dacha, where he wrote his works. The dacha is very simple and charming. I recommend reading his story "Say Hello to Vorona" before your trip to better appreciate the energy of this place.

Listvyanka was originally a stagecoach station and has now developed into a small town. The main composition of Listvyanka is the residential areas in 5 valleys—connected by a 'Gorky Avenue' along the lake. There are many guesthouses and hotels in the town, and you can eat the Baikal lake specialty Omul fish in the fish market by the lake. The largest residential area in the town has a dog sledding base at the very end, where we last got an adrenaline rush. It takes just over an hour to get from Irkutsk to Listvyanka. The road to the lake winds through the coniferous forests of Siberia, with some sections having steep gradients, resembling a ribbon spread out, with beautiful scenery. Halfway there is the Taltsy wooden hut village, which is a collection of wooden ancient buildings relocated during the construction of the Irkutsk Reservoir. Each wooden hut is a small museum, and there are even wooden castles and small churches built in the 17th century, very characteristic of Siberia. The ticket price is only 150 rubles per person, with an additional 50 rubles for parking, which is very cheap. Another place worth visiting is the Baikal Lake Museum, where you can see the legendary Baikal seals. The museum is located at the confluence of the Angara River and Lake Baikal, very close to Listvyanka. It displays many scientific research achievements of Lake Baikal, and the most attractive are the round and cute Baikal seals, which are rare seals that live in a freshwater lake (it is said that the bottom of Lake Baikal is connected to the ocean).
