The Longmen Grottoes!
How can you not visit the millennium-old Longmen Grottoes when you come to Luoyang? Although many statues inside have been damaged by human or natural causes, it still doesn't change the fact that this is a miraculous masterpiece of the ages!
The Longmen Grottoes are divided into the West and East Grottoes, which are along a single line, and you can't go back the same way. I entered from the west and exited from the east. The most famous statue, the Giant Buddha of Lushena, is in the West Grottoes, while the East Grottoes have the Xiangshan Temple and the Bai Juyi Mausoleum. However, I was there for the night view. I set off in the afternoon, and after visiting the West Grottoes, I went to the Li Buddha Platform to wait for the night view. The staff said the lights would be on at 6:30 PM, and many people were waiting there, even a huge army of drones. The scene was quite spectacular, and the night view of the Longmen Grottoes certainly did not disappoint. After watching, I left the scenic area via the Longmen Bridge. There are many buses back to the city area at the entrance of the scenic area. After returning to the city, I went to the Cross Street to eat and eat and eat!
Majestic Longmen Grottoes of Luoyang!
Luoyang Longmen Grottoes are one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated in the hostorical coty of Luoyang in Central China, Longmen Grottoes are one of the most important cultural sites in China. You can see the thousand years old stone carvings and how they perfectly build the statues. Definitely worth to visit! Avoid holiday season as it may be filled with people. Be ready for a long distance walk.
An Afternoon at Longmen Grottoes
The Longmen Grottoes are located near Luoyang city in Henan Province, and are a must-visit attraction when in the area. There are tens of thousands of statues of the Buddha and his disciples here, carved right into the rock face and in the mutliple different caves that are dotted along the limestone cliff face.
There are said to be more than 2,000 caves and niches carved into the cliff, and the entire thing stretches over 1km. It's pretty impressive to visit and marvel at all the details.
If you want a great view of the long stretch of carvings from afar, hop to the other side of the Yi River - there is a viewing platform where you can see a great panoramic view of the grottoes.

Lushena Buddha Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Lushena Buddha. Luoyang, Long Men site.
lunshena Buddha is hugest one in the are and this is visit card, the symbol of Long Men and whole Luoyang City. The statures are enormous big! There is only one question coming up to the mind, how ancient masters could create this kind of art and religious objects? Their spirits we really empowered by some supernatural forces! It is unbelievable! When you look at it, well around, you have no words to describe your feelings.
#TOTD Longmen Grottoes worship Buddha
Longmen Grottoes, the largest Buddha statue - Lushen Buddha, for Sakyamuni's body of Buddha, according to the Buddhist scriptures, Lushe that means bright. It is said that its face is shaped by Wu Zetian as a prototype, but it is difficult to make people associate with a cold and arbitrarily arrogant generation of empresses.
This Buddha statue has a height of 17.14 meters, a head height of 4 meters, and an ear length of 1.9 meters. The Buddha's face is full and round, the top of the head is wavy hairline, and the double eyebrows are like a new moon, attached to a pair of show eyes, gazing slightly. Below. High straight nose, small mouth, showing a peaceful smile. Both ears are long and slightly sag, and the lower jaw is round and slightly protrudes forward. Harmony and harmony, peace and quiet, wearing a shoulder-shoulder style, the clothes pattern is simple and simple, a circle of concentric circles of clothing, the head is very clear and holy. The whole Buddha statue is like a wise and kindly middle-aged woman who is respectful and fearful.
Day Two of the Four-Day Luoyang Tour (Longmen Grottoes)
Where to go when visiting Luoyang? I think this question doesn't need an answer.
I came to Luoyang for the Longmen Grottoes, to witness the grandeur of the Lushena Buddha.
Early in the morning, around six, our family of three got up to wash up and have breakfast, then took a taxi straight to the Longmen Grottoes. By eight o'clock, the first wave of visitors entered the scenic area, and it was already quite crowded. Climbing the steps, I could already feel the throng of people.
Viewing the Longmen Grottoes evokes complex emotions. On one hand, you marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship of the ancients from over a thousand years ago; on the other hand, you feel saddened by the lost and damaged statues. Especially when hearing from the audio guide that the head of a certain Buddha is now housed in a museum abroad, it's hard to describe the feeling of oppression.
The Tang Dynasty statues are all very dignified, with round and full faces, truly reflecting the inclusive spirit of the prosperous Tang era. Particularly, the Lushena Buddha and the bodhisattvas beside him, with their compassionate and gentle gaze, look down upon all beings. Beneath their feet, all beings seem so insignificant and humble, only able to look up to the Buddha with reverence and without desecration. It is said that the Buddha's ears are over 1.9 meters long, even taller than I am , and it's hard to imagine how the craftsmen of a thousand years ago designed and chiseled them out, stroke by stroke. The names of those craftsmen have long been submerged in the river of history. Their names were not recorded, but their works are immortal, forever revered and worshipped by later generations.
Compared to the opulence of the Tang Dynasty, the statues from the Northern Wei Dynasty are somewhat leaner, after all, the country was still fragmented at that time, and the rulers of the northern regimes were what we call 'barbarians'.
The main statues of the Longmen Grottoes are located in the West Hill, and the statues on the East Hill across the bridge cannot compare to those of the West Hill. However, the East Hill has one advantage: you can view the grand Buddha from across the river. From this distance, you can better appreciate the greatness of the Buddha and the insignificance of the world.
There's no need to mention the recommended rating for visiting the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang; it's definitely a full five stars. After May Day, Luoyang is already quite hot, so I suggest that friends who come to visit choose their clothing and visiting time wisely, and try to avoid the peak holiday periods.
The Longmen Grottoes | A thousand years later, the gaze that remains is one of devotion
The Longmen, also known as Yique, are where the eastern and western mountains face each other, with the Yi River flowing through them.
The story of the fish leaping through the Dragon's Gate took place here and has been passed down through the ages.
How similar is the appearance of the giant Buddha of Lushena on the western mountain cliff to that of Empress Wu Zetian? The answer has already concluded on the stage of history, and we cannot know.
Only the thousand grottoes sculptures reveal the past splendor and also protect the peace and tranquility of the world.
