#adventuretrips My first truly unforgettable impression of China is connected with the Great Wall. The weather was perfect, the walk was long, and we covered many kilometers. There were hardly any people around, just the mountains, the endless wall and incredible views. I still remember that feeling: walking forward, looking around and hardly believing that I was really there. Everything was so beautiful and peaceful that I just wanted to keep walking and never rush anywhere. I think that was when I first realized how strongly China attracted me. And perhaps that is why I keep coming back again and again 🇨🇳❤️ What place in China has made the strongest impression on you? #hotdiscussions #ChinaTravel #TravelChina #GreatWallOfChina #ChinaLovers #VisitChina #ExploreChina #ChinaAdventure #ChinaMemories #Wanderlust

I made the mistake of mentally categorising Jinshanling as "another attraction to visit". It isn't. The moment you start walking, you realise that you're dealing with uneven stone steps, steep climbs and plenty of elevation changes. Even when the distance doesn't sound intimidating on paper, the terrain makes the experience much more physical. I remember reaching a watchtower, thinking I could finally relax for a moment, then looking ahead and seeing another steep section waiting for me 😂 My practical checklist now would be: 🥾 Shoes with a decent grip 💧 Plenty of water 🧢 Sun protection 📸 A little extra time for stopping at viewpoints And most importantly, I wouldn't schedule another exhausting activity immediately afterwards. If you have walked the Great Wall, which section gave you the biggest surprise in terms of difficulty or terrain? 🥾 #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

Ascend the Jinshanling Great Wall on a clear morning after rain and encounter a vast sea of clouds covering the mountains. Milky white clouds surge and flow through the valleys, and the winding Great Wall resembles a giant dragon traversing the cloud waves, with ancient watchtowers appearing and disappearing in the mist. The green brick city walls have withstood the test of time, and the sea of clouds is ethereal and hazy. Ancient and modern scenes blend, like a traditional ink wash painting. Distant mountains gradually fade into the mist, with reality and illusion intertwining, revealing the grandeur of the landscape. Strolling slowly on the stone steps, a gentle breeze caresses your face, and clouds drift over the battlements, as if you are in a fairyland. Jinshanling is free from hustle and bustle. The majesty of the Great Wall and the softness of the sea of clouds complement each other, possessing both historical depth and poetic tranquility. Ascending to gaze into the distance, the vast sea of clouds evokes deep emotions. The thousand-year-old majestic pass, amidst the clouds, reveals its vast and imposing presence. This trip feels exceptionally unforgettable.

Chose to visit the Jinshanling Great Wall based on Trip.com's recommendation, and the experience did not disappoint. The scenery was simply stunning, and I was pleased to find that there weren't too many crowds, which made it a much more enjoyable day. Our guide, Cindy, was exceptionally friendly and pleasant. She gave a brief tour on the bus ride to Jinshanling, sharing interesting facts and setting the tone for the adventure ahead. Once we reached the Wall, we had plenty of free time to explore at our own pace—a huge plus for anyone who likes to linger and take in the sights! A small tip for future travelers: we had originally purchased tickets for the cable car ride up. However, the line was quite long, with about an hour's wait. Instead, we opted to walk up ourselves. The distance isn't far, but be prepared for a bit of a workout—especially if it's a hot day, as the path is uphill. On the way back, I decided not to use the cable car ticket since I didn't want to deal with another queue. Keep in mind, there are a lot of stairs at Jinshanling, and the step heights vary quite a bit—some can be very steep. Parts of the climb can be challenging, so it’s good to wear comfortable shoes and take your time. All in all, it was a worthwhile trip with efficient service and spectacular views. Thank you, Trip.com, for making the booking process so smooth! #realreview

The Great Wall isn’t just one wall—it’s made up of several sections, each offering a completely different experience. Whether you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, an easy walk, or an unforgettable hiking adventure, there’s a perfect section for you. 🌟 Badaling – Best for first-time visitors and families. It’s the most popular section with excellent facilities and the easiest access from Beijing. 🌿 Mutianyu – My top recommendation for most travelers. It offers stunning mountain views, fewer crowds than Badaling, and even a cable car and toboggan ride for extra fun. 🥾 Jinshanling – Perfect for hikers and photographers. This section combines restored and wild parts of the wall, making it one of the most scenic places to explore. 🌄 Simatai – Ideal for adventure seekers. Known for its steep paths and the unique opportunity to experience parts of the Great Wall at night. ⛰️ Jiankou – A dream for experienced hikers. This rugged, unrestored section offers dramatic landscapes but requires good fitness and hiking experience. 📌 Which one should you choose? ✅ First visit to China: Mutianyu ✅ Traveling with family: Badaling or Mutianyu ✅ Best photos: Jinshanling ✅ Adventure lovers: Simatai ✅ Expert hikers: Jiankou 💡 Travel Tips: · Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds. · Wear comfortable hiking shoes. · Bring plenty of water, especially in summer. · Spring and autumn offer the best weather and clearest views. No matter which section you choose, walking on the Great Wall of China is an unforgettable experience and a true bucket-list adventure. 📍 Which section would you love to explore first? Let me know in the comments! #GreatWallOfChina #ChinaTravel #VisitChina #TravelGuide #BucketList #AdventureTravel #Hiking #Beijing #TravelTips #ExploreChina

Jinshanling was one of the places where I realized that the Great Wall is not just about walking on an ancient monument. The landscape around it is part of the experience. The section is about 130 km northeast of central Beijing, in the mountains between Beijing's Miyun District and Luanping County in Hebei. It stretches for about 10.5 km and has dozens of watchtowers, so I definitely recommend allowing several hours instead of treating it as a quick photo stop 🏯 💰 The entrance ticket is currently ¥65 in peak season and ¥55 in the off-season. There is also a shuttle bus inside the scenic area for ¥10 one way, while the cable car costs ¥60 round trip or ¥40 one way. 🚐 From Beijing, the easiest option is a dedicated tourist bus or organized transfer. A current direct service from downtown Beijing lists a meeting point at Dongzhimen and takes about 2.5 hours each way, with a round-trip package including admission costing around US$50. And here is the important part if sunset is your goal: I would not simply book the standard morning day trip. Many organized buses return to Beijing around 15:00, which is far too early for a proper sunset experience. Instead, I would arrange private transportation, stay nearby or choose an itinerary specifically designed around the late afternoon. The reason is simple. As the sun drops, the Wall starts catching that beautiful golden light. The watchtowers become silhouettes, the mountains turn darker and the Wall seems to disappear into the landscape. And suddenly, all those steep stairs I complained about earlier feel completely worth it 😂 My tip is to arrive well before golden hour. Jinshanling is a hiking destination, not a viewpoint where you simply get out of a car, take one photo and leave. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and give yourself enough time to reach a good section of the Wall before the light becomes magical. One important detail: opening and last-entry times vary by season and gate, so I would check the current schedule before planning a sunset visit. Official Beijing tourism information currently lists Jinshanling's general admission at ¥65 in peak season and ¥55 in the off-season. For me, the whole point is to be standing on the Wall when the mountains start glowing. That is the sunset I would plan the entire afternoon around 🌄 Would you make the extra effort to stay near Jinshanling just to experience the Great Wall at sunset? #sunsetplaces

Everyone heads to the Forbidden City and the crowded section of the Great Wall, but the real gems are hidden in the outskirts of the capital. Wild sections of the wall, imperial tombs, and mountain temples are quiet and incredibly beautiful. Here are eight underrated places near Beijing. 1️⃣ Jinshanling Great Wall – a wild, dilapidated section with almost no tourists. 💡 Fact: This section is adored by photographers for its untouched atmosphere and views of the mountain ranges. 2️⃣ Jiankou Wall – the most rugged and picturesque section for daring trekkers. 3️⃣ Ming Dynasty Tombs – the majestic Avenue of Spirits with stone animals. 4️⃣ Gubeishui Ancient Town – the water channels at the foot of the wall, magical at night. 5️⃣ Tanzhe Temple — the oldest in the area, older than Beijing itself. 💡 Fact: A local saying goes, "First there was Tanzhe Temple, then there was Beijing." 6️⃣ Longqing Gorge — in winter, it hosts an ice sculpture festival. 7️⃣ Chuandixia Village — ancient Ming Dynasty courtyards in the mountains. 8️⃣ Xiangshan Mountain (Fragrant Mountains) — in autumn, the slopes glow with gold and crimson. 💡 Fact: The autumn "red sea" of foliage on Xiangshan is one of the most beloved sights among Beijingers. And a tip: choose the wild sections of the wall in good weather—the trails there are uneven, but they offer the best photos without a soul in sight. It's also convenient to find routes and starting points in advance right in the app, based on reviews. Beijing isn't just the city center; it also boasts stunning surrounding areas. Give yourself a day to escape the city! This is the #ChinaOffRoute section—about places away from the crowds 👀 💾 Save before your trip. 📤 Send it to a trekking-loving friend. ✅ And subscribe—the outskirts of Xi'an are coming up! 💬 Honestly: a wild wall or a cozy water town—which would you go first? Tell us in the comments 👇😉 And I'll go grab the ginger cat from the bookshelf—he's perched high up, convinced he's guarding his own personal Great Wall from invaders. 😹❤️ #china #chinatravel #chinatrip #tripcom #tripmoment #china

📍 Jinshanling Great Wall, Hebei Whenever I saw photos of the Great Wall before, I always thought its most awe-inspiring quality was its sheer length. But once you truly set your sights on the ridgelines of Jinshanling, you realize that its beauty goes far beyond just its scale. Here, the battlements ripple alongside the mountain terrain, with watchtowers scattered across the rolling ridges. From different vantage points, the wall alternates between hugging the slopes and scaling the peaks, eventually vanishing into the distant mountain range. I especially love the feeling captured in these photos— Layers of mountains in the distance, ancient walls in the foreground, and the sky providing a sense of vast openness. The Great Wall doesn't just exist on its own; it has become one with the surrounding landscape. Located in Luanping County, Chengde, Hebei Province, Jinshanling is relatively close to Beijing and is one of the most distinctive sections of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. Compared to more touristy sections, the terrain here is more dramatic, and it retains much of its original, rugged historical charm. If you love: 🏔️ Mountain views 📷 Landscape photography 🥾 Hiking 🏯 Chinese history and ancient architecture Then Jinshanling is a destination definitely worth adding to your list. I particularly enjoy the feeling of standing at a high point looking out. On one side is the path already traveled, and on the other, the wall stretching into the horizon. Those watchtowers, which look so small from afar, truly showcase the magnificence of ancient engineering when framed against the vast mountain range. Perhaps the most moving thing about the Great Wall isn't just its grandeur, but how it has stood silently for centuries, watching over the same mountains and sky. 🇨🇳 Beautiful China is more than just a destination; it’s a landscape to be savored slowly. If you had to choose, which version of the Great Wall do you prefer? ① Watching the sunrise from a peak 🌅 ② Watching the sunset on the ridges 🌄 ③ Clear skies over the mountains 🏔️ ④ The Great Wall shrouded in mist and clouds ☁️

🎢 1. Universal Beijing Resort ⭐ 📍 Tongzhou District The newest Universal theme park in the world and arguably one of the best. It features a massive Wizarding World of Harry Potter, alongside Transformers, Jurassic World, Kung Fu Panda Land of Awesomeness, Minions, and spectacular evening shows. 👉 Even if you've already been to Universal in the US or Japan, the Beijing park offers a completely different vibe. ⸻ 🌳 2. Beijing Wild Animal Park 📍 Daxing District Unlike a traditional zoo, here you can drive through massive safari zones where lions, tigers, giraffes, bears, and rhinos roam freely. It's one of the best destinations in China for a family trip. ⸻ 🌅 3. Jinshanling Great Wall 📍 About 2 hours from downtown Beijing Yes, it's still the Great Wall of China. But you'll find practically zero tourists here. Many consider this specific section to be the most beautiful because part of it is fully restored, while the rest remains in its original, untouched historical state. An absolute must for hiking. ⸻ 🏯 4. Gubei Water Town 📍 Miyun District If you want to experience an ancient Chinese town without the overwhelming crowds, this is the place to go. Its canals, stone bridges, traditional houses, red lanterns, and stunning night-time illuminations make it look like a set straight out of a period film. You can even stay overnight to catch the spectacular evening show. ⸻ 🌈 5. Shilinxia Glass Bridge 📍 Pinggu District One of the most breathtaking glass-bottom bridges near Beijing. Beneath your feet is a sheer drop of hundreds of meters into the gorge, surrounded by mountains and dense forests. The perfect day trip. ⸻ 🏞️ 6. Longqing Gorge 📍 Yanqing District Many refer to this spot as the "Chinese fjords." In the summer, you can take a scenic boat ride right between the towering cliffs, while winter brings a magical ice sculpture festival. A stunningly beautiful hidden gem that foreign tourists rarely know about. ⸻ 🌸 7. Summer Palace at Dawn Yes, the Summer Palace is famous. But almost everyone visits during the day. If you get there right when it opens, you'll be greeted by practically empty pathways, a tranquil Kunming Lake, stunning pagoda reflections in the water, and locals practicing Tai Chi. It’s a completely different and far more magical experience compared to going midday.

Which section of the Great Wall near Beijing should you choose? The Great Wall of China isn't just a single monument, but a network of fortifications stretching for thousands of kilometers. The section you choose can determine how your day will unfold: quiet contemplation, photo-ops, or a scramble for a spot in line. Here's a complete guide to the main sections near Beijing, from the closest to the furthest. 🏯 Juyongguan (居庸关) — a historic outpost before Badaling Pros: Just ~60 km from Beijing, located right before Badaling, a 1-1.5 hour drive. This isn't just a section of the wall, but a huge fortress-outpost with four gates, a temple, and Buddhist steles. The ancient Silk Road passed through here. A very picturesque gorge. Cons: Huge number of tourists (everyone with little time is brought here). Heavily commercialized, almost no historical atmosphere remains. Best for: Those with only half a day and who want to see a historic outpost, not just a wall on a ridge. 🌊 Shuiguan (水关长城) – a quiet spot near Badaling Pros: Located on the road to Badaling, but with far fewer tourists. The wall descends into a ravine and then climbs up another slope, hence the name "Water Outpost." There are nearly vertical sections for extreme sports enthusiasts. Cons: Infrastructure is poor, no cable car. Part of the wall has not been restored. The steep climbs require good physical fitness. Best for: Those who want peace and adrenaline near the city, are willing to walk a lot, and don't need comfort. 🥇 Badaling (八达岭) — the most famous and convenient Pros: Easiest to reach — a 30-minute high-speed train ride from Beijing. Excellent infrastructure: cable cars, cafes, and wheelchair ramps. Ideal for travelers with limited mobility. Cons: Huge crowds year-round. Heavily restored — feels more like a park than a historical monument. Suitable for: Those who want to quickly and comfortably tick off the "I've been to the Wall" box, especially families with children or the elderly. 🌲 Mutianyu (慕田峪) — the best balance for a first-time visitor. Pros: Fewer people than Badaling, but excellent infrastructure: a cable car and the famous toboggan run. The Wall has been well restored, but retains its atmosphere. Beautiful forest views. Cons: Can still be crowded during peak season. There's a commercial feel to it. Best for: An ideal choice for first-time visitors, family trips, and those looking to combine history with entertainment. 🏔️ Jinshanling (金山岭) — a photographer's paradise Pros: Very few tourists, stunning panoramas, numerous watchtowers. A unique combination of restored and authentic "wild" areas. Cons: The furthest from Beijing — about 130 km, a 2-2.5 hour drive. Requires good physical fitness. Best for: Those who want to take the best photos, enjoy nature, and the quiet. 🌙 Simatai (司马台) — authenticity and night magic Pros: The only area open at night with illumination. Preserves the original Ming-dynasty appearance. Nearby is the water town of Gubei. Cons: Very far (about 2.5 hours by car). The terrain is challenging, with some extremely steep sections. Book in advance. Best for: Romantics and adventurers willing to travel long distances for a unique experience. 💡 Comparison Historic outpost + close proximity to Juyongguan Peace and adventure near Shuiguan Maximum comfort and accessibility: Badaling The best balance for a first-timer: Mutianyu Beautiful photos and complete silence: Jinshanling Night walk and authenticity: Simatai Top tip: Try to visit any section in the morning, before it opens—this will help you beat the crowds. The best seasons are spring and fall. And don't try to see everything in a day—choose one section to truly experience it. 🏯

This question has been asked thousands of times in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan travel communities, but the answer is rarely a simple "yes." Whether it's worth the trip depends entirely on your ability to capture *that* iconic photo. A shot that is instantly recognized as "Ah, this is Mutianyu" almost always features three key elements: 🧱 The Wall ── A well-restored section of Ming Dynasty walls with distinct brick textures and obvious slopes. 🌫 The Person ── A tiny silhouette standing by a watchtower or walking along the middle of the path. 🏔 The Scenery ── Distant mountain ridges fading into the background, with mist perfectly cradled in the valleys. When these three elements align, your Mutianyu trip pays for itself. Without them, it just feels like another Badaling. 🚐 Why Mutianyu Is the Only Section That Hits the Mark Badaling’s watchtowers feel compressed, making the view seem like you're just taking photos from the ground; Juyongguan’s terrain is flat, making it look like a roadside stroll; Jinshanling is too far out for Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan travelers to conquer in a single day. Mutianyu perfectly strikes the balance between the extremes: ✅ High enough elevation so the watchtowers rise above the valley mist. ✅ Excellently restored sections that highlight authentic "Ming Dynasty bricks." ✅ Close enough to downtown Beijing for an easy day trip. 🕘 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM ── The Golden Window for That Photo Mutianyu spans 2.5 kilometers of walls and 22 watchtowers. The ultimate spot for photography lies right in the middle, between Watchtowers 14 and 6 🔭. After 9:30 AM, the morning sun hits from the east, beautifully illuminating the Ming Dynasty brickwork; with the morning fog still lingering, a light mist blankets the valley 🌫. This is your best chance to capture the "Wall + Person + Scenery" trifecta in a single shot. 🚡 Cable Car Up ── Better for Photos Than Hiking Many first-timers assume hiking up provides the "real" experience, but it’s actually the opposite. The hiking trails are tucked behind the wall, cutting off the iconic main views. The cable car, however, glides right past the front of the watchtowers 🚠, dropping you perfectly at the center of the middle section. Hiking up means missing the optimal camera angles, while taking the cable car places you exactly where you need to be for the best shots. 🎢 Toboggan Down ── The Perfect Action Shot Beyond That Photo If the iconic Great Wall photo captures the "static" beauty, the downhill toboggan ride brings the "dynamic" thrill 🎢. Metal tracks, dense forests, and controllable speeds ── the toboggan is hands down the most frequently posted Instagram Story by returning travelers. The ancient thousand-year-old wall combined with a modern adrenaline rush gives your itinerary the perfect rhythm of highs and lows. 📍 Choosing Your Meeting Point ── Setting the Tone for Your Morning 🚇 Dongsi Station Exit E (Lines 5 / 6) ── The most frequent departures. 🚇 Hepingxiqiao Station Exit B (Line 5) ── The convenient pickup point for travelers staying in the north. If you're from Macau and staying around Dongcheng, Chaoyang, or Dongzhimen, departing from Dongsi Exit E is the most hassle-free choice 🧳; For Taiwanese friends who just arrived in Beijing and dropped off luggage early in the morning, waiting at Hepingxiqiao Exit B avoids the hassle of dragging bags across town. Both spots are easy to spot: just look for the green vests with the BusDa logo 👕, which are the quickest visual anchors during Beijing's bustling morning rush hour. 🌫 Why Mist Is Your Friend, Not Your Enemy Many first-timers get disappointed when they see fog, thinking, "I won't see the Great Wall today." But at Mutianyu, mist is a massive bonus 🌫: ✅ Mist enhances the layered depth of the distant mountain ridges. ✅ Mist creates an illusion where the tops of the watchtowers seem to float in mid-air. ✅ Mist amplifies the sense of scale when framing "a tiny person standing by a watchtower on the middle section." Sunny photos at Badaling often look flat; but misty photos at Mutianyu pack serious cinematic drama. 🎯 The Only Thing You Need to Remember for This Trip Focus entirely on getting that "Wall + Person + Scenery" trifecta photo. 🌅 Book the 8:30 AM departure. 🚠 Take the cable car up (skip the hike to save your photo angles). 🚶 Walk the middle section from Watchtower 14 to 6. 📸 Wait for the perfect lighting near Watchtower 6 and snap the shot. 🎢 Ride the toboggan down to capture some dynamic footage. 🌇 Disband at the Bird's Nest in the evening. Follow this sequence, and that photo will be the ultimate proof of an epic Mutianyu adventure 👍. Without that photo, going there is just visiting a section of a wall. With it, Mutianyu is truly worth every penny.

Which section should you choose? 👨👩👧 First time in China → Mutianyu 🚆 Easiest trip from Beijing → Badaling 📸 Awesome photos → Jinshanling 🌅 Great atmosphere & evening route → Simatai 🌊 Wall + sea → Shanhaiguan 🏜 Off-the-beaten-path route → Jiayuguan 🌄 A different side of China → Hushan Great Wall 💡 Pro tip: don't try to cram multiple sections into a single day. The Great Wall is all about experiencing the vibe of the place, not racking up miles.

The Ultimate Guide to Exploring the Jinshanling Great Wall Located in Hualougou Village, Bakeshiying Town, Luanping County, Chengde City, the Jinshanling Great Wall is one of the most magnificent sections of the Great Wall, celebrated as the "Unrivaled Beauty of Jinshan." It not only preserves original historical ruins but also blends with rolling mountains, lush trees, and breathtaking landscapes, making it a mecca for hiking enthusiasts and photography lovers. The Great Wall here is divided into the West Route and East Route, catering to different fitness levels and photography needs. Transportation is relatively convenient, making it a great choice for the general public. Recommended Routes & Must-Do Activities If you're departing from Beijing, it's highly recommended to take the route going up the mountain at Taochunkou → Zhuanduokou → and down at Houchuankou. This path covers the essence of Jinshanling, offering the most beautiful scenery, fewer crowds, and the perfect backdrop for panoramic and portrait shots. Initially, take the shuttle bus from the visitor center to the ticket checkpoint. After passing the commercial street, turn right along the "Farming Era" path, and you'll see the sign for Taochunkou. The hike up Taochunkou takes about 30 minutes. The first half features slopes and stairs, which might feel physically demanding, but every step is rewarding. The intertwining of blue skies, green trees, mountain terrains, and the Great Wall is truly awe-inspiring. Once you officially start climbing the Great Wall, head first to the Six-Eyed Tower (Liuyanlou) for an expansive view. The stretch from Taochunkou to Zhuanduokou belongs to the West Route. It's less crowded, allowing for relaxed photography, and takes about 1 hour to reach Zhuanduokou. Passing Zhuanduokou, you enter the East Route, leading to the General Tower (Jiangjunlou) and the Square Tower (Sifangtai). The branch path here is perfect for portraits with a spectacular background. Continuing forward, you'll pass Shalingkou, Small Jinshan Tower (Xiaojinshanlou), and Great Jinshan Tower (Dajinshanlou). This section requires a bit more stamina, but the ruins and platforms along the way are ideal for souvenir photos. Near the Small Jinshan Tower, you can grab some instant noodles (sold on-site for about 20 RMB/cup) to rest and recharge. Finally, when you reach Houchuankou, you can head down the mountain. The descent has more slopes and fewer stairs, making it less physically taxing, so no need to worry too much. Top Photo Spots Six-Eyed Tower (Liuyanlou): Expansive views, the easiest spot to capture the winding full length of the Great Wall Zhuanduokou to General Tower: Undulating terrains, excellent for photographing the Great Wall's curves and portraits Shalingkou to Great Jinshan Tower: Ancient walls and ruins along the way, perfect for capturing a sense of history Small Jinshan Tower: A great spot to rest and resupply, while also capturing panoramic views of the sky, distant mountains, and the wall Houchuankou Descent: Overlooking the valley running parallel to the Great Wall, offering beautifully layered angles Special Recommendations 1. Transportation: The Huaimi Line (Gubeikou Station) is a good option for the outbound trip (suggest arriving on the early train at 9:23, return train departs at 17:20). After exiting the station, take a taxi to the Jinshanling Great Wall Visitor Center (about 13 km, around 60 RMB; remember to negotiate based on the number of people). If it's a weekend or holiday, the return trip can get congested, so it's best to leave the scenic area no later than 16:30. 2. Take the shuttle bus to the ticket checkpoint. Remember to check your time schedule before touring. You can buy water and instant noodles along the way, but resupplying on the Great Wall is difficult, so it's recommended to bring your own water and snacks. 3. After entering the scenic area, pay attention to the route and pace yourself. The ascent at Taochunkou and the descent at Houchuankou will take up most of your energy. If you don't exercise regularly, this route might feel quite tiring, so rest appropriately. Fitter friends can continue along the East Route to Hualou, the Character Brick Wall, and descend via the East Gate, but there are no shuttle buses at the East Gate, requiring a walk back to the visitor center. 4. Opening hours: April 1 - October 31 (04:00-18:30); November 1 - March 31 (05:00-17:30). Plan your ticket purchase and entry time in advance. The ticket is 80 RMB; keep it safe as there are checkpoints along the way. Things to Note · Arrive early and leave early to avoid return traffic, especially since heading back to Beijing requires passing through a checkpoint where traffic jams are common · The weather can change quickly during the tour. Bring a hat and sunglasses for sun protection. It gets windy on the mountain, and sun protection is especially crucial on sunny days · Climbing the Great Wall demands a lot of energy. Plan your itinerary reasonably, bring plenty of water, and avoid exhaustion · Snacks sold in the scenic area are relatively expensive; you can bring your own simple dry rations and water · The route is long, so wear anti-slip sports shoes and suitable hiking clothes

Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall: A Unique Wall on the Water The only section of the Great Wall near Beijing that, in places, goes right under the water! This route is ideal for a relaxing, leisurely ride without any extreme climbs! 3. Simatai Great Wall & Gubei Water Town: The Magic of the Wall at Night Simatai is one of the steepest and most authentic sections, retaining its rugged, pristine appearance since the Ming Dynasty. And the picturesque "water town" of Gubei, located right at the foot, makes this location ideal for a weekend trip. 📍 Location: Miyun District, about 120 km from Beijing. 🚇 How to get there: A direct tourist express bus departs from Dongzhimen Station directly to Gubei Town (the journey takes about 2-2.5 hours). 💰 How much: A ticket to the Great Wall alone is 40 RMB, and admission to the Gubei Water Town is 140 RMB (a combo ticket for 170 RMB is more convenient and affordable). The cable car to the Wall is an additional cost (around 160 RMB roundtrip). 🕒 Opening hours: Daytime Wall tours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Night tours are from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The town is open until late in the evening. 💡 Tip: Simatai is the only section of the Great Wall open for nighttime visits! Heading to the Jinshanling Great Wall just to witness a breathtaking sunrise—this trip is truly worth it! Arriving at the scenic area just after 4 a.m., I set off on the Great Wall under the cover of night. The cool mountain breeze blows gently, the distant mountain outlines are hazy, and the ancient wall feels even more majestic in the darkness. Having checked the sunrise time in advance, I headed straight to the West Five-Eye Tower viewing spot, which offers an excellent vantage point and is a top choice for watching the sunrise. As I waited, the sky gradually brightened with the first light, slowly spreading pink, purple, and orange hues. When the sun broke through the clouds, golden rays instantly bathed the mountains. The winding Great Wall looked like a golden dragon coiled among the hills, with the watchtowers beautifully outlined by the glow. Mist swirled around the mountains, and the interplay of light and shadow created a fairy-tale scene. Standing on the Great Wall, watching the sunrise slowly ascend and overlooking the endless mountain ranges, I was deeply moved. There were no crowds here, allowing me to quietly appreciate the Wall’s ancient grandeur. Every photo taken was a masterpiece. Tips: Be sure to check the sunrise time in advance and set out early to secure a good spot; the mountain air is cold in the early morning, so dress warmly; wear comfortable shoes for hiking on the Wall. Chase a sunrise at Jinshanling and unlock the most stunning view of the Great Wall!

【Introduction】: Address: Hualou Valley Village, Bakeshiying Town, Luanping County, Chengde City (navigate to "Jinshanling Great Wall Scenic Area"). Tickets: Adult tickets are about 65 RMB (peak season). Local residents of Chengde can get an annual pass for 30 RMB, while non-local tourists can get an annual pass for 100 RMB (unlimited entries). Opening Hours: 04:00 - 18:30 (ticket sales stop at 17:00, entry stops at 17:30). The early opening is to facilitate watching the sunrise, which is a major feature of Jinshanling. Transportation: About 1-1.5 hours by car from Chengde city center (via G45 Daguang Expressway); about 2 hours from Beijing. 2. Recommended Routes: Choose according to your stamina The essence of Jinshanling lies in its loop design that avoids retracing steps. It is recommended to choose based on your stamina and time: Route Type Route Diagram Duration Suitable For Classic Experience Line Central Gate → Brick Tower Entrance (up) → Shalingkou (down) → Central Gate About 2h Families with children, elderly, tight on time Photography & Scenery Line Central Gate → Brick Tower Entrance → Small Jinshan Tower → Cable Car Downhill About 2.5h Photographers, those wanting to see sunset/cloud sea In-depth Three Wonders Line Central Gate → Brick Tower Entrance → East Five-Eyed Tower → East Gate Exit About 4h History enthusiasts, those wanting to see barrier walls/inscribed bricks Hardcore Hiking Line West Gate → Taochunkou → Brick Tower Entrance → Central Gate About 4h Hiking lovers, good stamina 💡 Route Explanation: With elderly/children: take the "Classic Experience Line," gentle slopes, dense watchtowers, best experience. Want to see the "Three Wonders": must take the "In-depth Three Wonders Line," as barrier walls, inscribed bricks, and Qilin spirit screens are mainly concentrated in the east section (from General Tower to East Five-Eyed Tower). For great photos: Small Jinshan Tower and Big Jinshan Tower are the best spots for sunrise, sunset, and cloud sea photography. It is recommended to go in the afternoon for the best lighting. 3. Practical Tips (Pitfall Avoidance Guide) Cable Car Choice: The uphill cable car costs about 38-40 RMB (one way), directly reaching near Small Jinshan Tower. It is recommended to take the cable car up and walk down to save energy and see the full scenery. Walking uphill takes about 40-60 minutes. Sunrise Strategy: The scenic area opens at 4:00 specifically for sunrise viewing. Check the sunrise time a day in advance, and after entering, head straight to Small Jinshan Tower or General Tower to secure a spot. If you don’t want to get up too early, you can stay at a guesthouse near the scenic area entrance. Equipment Recommendations: Shoes: Must wear non-slip sports shoes/hiking boots! The Great Wall steps are uneven and some sections are steep. Supplies: Few and expensive water points on the mountain, it is recommended to bring 1-1.5L of water and some snacks. Sun Protection: High altitude means strong UV rays; hats and sunglasses are essential. Accommodation Recommendations: If you want to see the sunrise or explore deeply, it is recommended to stay overnight. There are many farmhouses outside the scenic area (about 100-200 RMB per room), with decent conditions; for higher quality, consider Anaya Jinshanling (advance booking required). 4. Special Activities Night Tours/Star Gazing: Night sessions or star photography events may be available during peak season; follow the "Jinshanling Great Wall" official WeChat account. Seasonal Highlights: Visiting now (April) is when mountain flowers begin to bloom; autumn (October) is the best season for red leaves covering the mountains; winter after snow is an excellent photography window. 🕘【Opening Hours】: Recommended entry at 9 AM 💴【Ticket Price】: 65 RMB ⛺【Activities】: Cable car 45 RMB 🚌【Transportation Tips】: You can charter a car from Chengde 👉【Itinerary】: Jinshanling Great Wall is suitable for a one-day trip 🧡【Preparation】: Bring some food and water

Starting from downtown Chengde, the car wound through the Yanshan mountain foothills for over an hour. The navigation showed we had arrived, but looking left and right, all I saw were continuous mountain ranges and scattered farmhouses—there was no sign of what a "scenic area" should look like. It wasn’t until I opened the car door and looked up to see the winding gray wall on the distant ridge—the Jinshanling Great Wall—quietly resting in the sunset that I understood: Hualou Valley Village is not a "scenic spot," it is a home at the foot of the Great Wall. The village is small. Walking along the village road, every few steps you can see Great Wall photographs hanging on the walls—surging seas of clouds, starry skies, vast snowy scenes—each one looks like the work of a professional photographer. But the homestay owner told me these were all taken by the villagers themselves. Since the Jinshanling Great Wall opened to the public in the 1980s, the farmers of Hualou Valley Village began to engage in photography, guiding visitors who came to shoot the Great Wall. Watching them, they picked up cameras themselves. Now, this small mountain village of over 1,800 people has more than 50 members in its photography association, including two members of the China Photographers Association, earning it the nickname "Great Wall Photography Art Village." Staying overnight in a village homestay, I could see the silhouette of the Great Wall just by opening the window. The owner, a warm local guy, brought out a plate of homemade stir-fried eggs with firewood and a bowl of corn porridge, insisting on sitting down to chat with me. He told me the village used to be poor, and young people left; now, thanks to Great Wall tourism and homestays, hundreds of families earn money right at their doorstep. What makes him prouder is that his second uncle is a Great Wall protector for the Jinshanling section, patrolling for over twenty years, walking four to five kilometers of mountain paths daily, remembering every brick, tile, blade of grass, and tree on the wall. When he said this, he suddenly stood up, pointed to the Great Wall in the night outside the window, and said, "We used to think the Great Wall was just next to our village. Now we say—the Great Wall is our lifeline." The next morning at 5:30, led by villagers, I climbed the Great Wall. The morning mist had not yet cleared; the watchtowers and walls appeared faintly in the sea of clouds, and golden sunlight slowly spread over the ridge. The farmer-photographer guide set up his tripod, adjusting the settings while turning back to smile at me, saying, "Look, this is the view right outside our door." At that moment, I suddenly understood—the most touching thing about this village is not how close it is to the Great Wall, but that every person here truly loves this Great Wall. It is not a ticketed attraction fenced off, but their "own yard" that they see every morning when they open the door and walk on every evening. It takes only about ten minutes on foot from Hualou Valley Village to the Jinshanling Great Wall scenic area entrance. The village has hundreds of unique homestays, providing both food and lodging, and at night you can chat with farmer-photographers about Great Wall stories. If you come here, don’t just treat it as a place to stay—spend a night, get up early, and climb the Great Wall with the villagers. You will find the most beautiful scenery is never just in the lens, but in the eyes of those willing to share the Great Wall’s stories with you.

The hike from Jinshanling to Jinshanling East is one of the most scenic and diverse Great Wall walks. The route typically begins near the Main Gate, where you first step onto a beautifully restored section of the wall. This part is perfect for photos - a long chain of watchtowers stretches across the ridgeline and is clearly visible far into the horizon. It’s one of those classic Great Wall views you see in travel magazines or as a screen saver on you PC. As you continue further along the route, the wall gradually becomes more authentic and less restored. Stones are uneven, some towers are partially ruined by time, and the atmosphere feels much more raw and historical. The trail leads toward the famous East Five-Eye Tower, offering panoramic mountain views, and then continues past: Black Tower, Lesser Jinshan Tower, Big Jinshan Tower. After about 2 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Houchuankou Pass - the highest point of this section and also known as one of the most challenging and exposed parts of Jinshanling. From here, the hike becomes more physically demanding. Expect steep climbs, near-vertical sections and parts where you need to use both hands and feet. The route end at Tower22, where you can walk to the East Gate parking. The full route takes around 4–5 hours and covers approximately 7–8 km along the wall. What makes this hike truly special is the contrast - you start on a perfect, restored wall and gradually transition into a rugged, ancient structure that feels untouched by time. Combined with endless mountain views and tower after tower on the horizon, it’s an unforgettable experience. 💡 Pro tip: arrange a pickup at the East Gate in advance - otherwise you’ll need to hike back the same way. #Jinshanling #GreatWallHiking #ChinaAdventure #WildGreatWall #GreatWallViews #HikingChina #TripMoments #BeijingTravel

Most tourists visit the Great Wall for a few hours, rushing through crowded sections. But if you want to experience its true scale and beauty, a two-day trip covering four distinct sections is unbeatable. Each section has its own character: · Jiankou - wild, dramatic, almost untouched by restoration · Mutianyu - fully restored, easy to walk, iconic watchtowers · Jinshanling - a mix of restored and ruined sections, stunning ridge-line hikes · Jinshanling East - more authentic, challenging, with steep climbs and the famous Houchuankou Pass This route gives you a perfect balance: dramatic wild wall sections, restored historic towers, long mountain ridge walks, and unforgettable sunrise and sunset views. Day 1 · Jiankou: Begin your adventure from Xizhazi village on the wild and rugged section. Expect dramatic scenery and photo opportunities with the mountains and crumbling walls. · Mutianyu: Hike through this fully restored section. Wide stone steps, impressive watchtowers, and optional toboggan rides make it very different from Jiankou. · Evening: Head to Gubei Water Town for dinner and a stroll. Spend the night in a nearby guesthouse or hotel to rest for Day 2. Day 2 · Jinshanling: Start early from Main gate to enjoy fewer crowds. Hike along restored and wild sections, with several watchtowers offering epic views. · Jinshanling East: Continue toward the East gate. The trail becomes more rugged, with steep vertical climbs at Houchuankou Pass - the highest and most challenging part. · Evening: Transfer back to Beijing after completing the two-day adventure. Tips for the Trip · Driver or private transfer: The route isn’t circular, so you’ll need to arrange drop-off and pick-up points. · Pack smart: Only take what you need for the Wall itself; leave extra luggage in your vehicle. · Weather prep: Dress in layers; mountain weather can change quickly. · Essentials: Water, snacks, small first-aid kit, sun protection. · Footwear: Wear shoes with good grip for steep and uneven sections. · Timing: Start early both days to enjoy sunrise on the Wall and avoid larger crowds. This two-day, four-section itinerary is the best way to truly experience the Great Wall - far from the mass-tourist rush, allowing you to feel its history, scale, and natural beauty. 👉 See my detailed posts about:

Tired of the crowds at Badaling? This time, I discovered a hidden gem of the wild Great Wall just 2 hours by car from Beijing — the Jinshanling Great Wall. Here, there’s no over-commercialized noise, only breathtaking sunrises over a sea of clouds, dense enemy towers and arches, and apricot blossoms covering the hills from April to May. As the best-preserved section of the Ming Great Wall, it’s definitely worth a special trip. 🚗 Basic Information and Transportation (From Beijing) 📍 Location and Tickets · Address: Hualou Valley Village, Bakeshiying Town, Luanping County, Chengde City, Hebei Province (Navigate to “Jinshanling Great Wall Scenic Area”) · Tickets: Peak season (April to October) about 65 RMB/person (cheaper if bought online in advance) · Opening Hours: 04:00 - 18:30 (Main gate opens early for sunrise viewing) 🚦 What’s the Easiest Way to Get There? · Self-driving (recommended): Take Jingcheng Expressway (G45) → exit at Simatai/Jinshanling → follow signs directly. About 2-2.5 hours total, excellent road conditions. Tip: Don’t mistakenly exit at “Jinshanling Toll Station” or you’ll detour an extra 20 km. · Public Transport: There is a tourist shuttle from Dongzhimen, Beijing (weekends/holidays), or take a high-speed train to Chengde South Station then taxi (about 1 hour). 🗺️ 5 Tested Routes (Copy and Use) Jinshanling stretches about 15 km. I’ve organized 5 routes of varying difficulty for you. Refer to the original map for details. Route Duration Difficulty Suitable For Highlights 1. Classic Line 2h ⭐ Families/Elderly Brick Tower Entrance → Shaling Entrance, quick check-in 2. Photography Line 2.5h ⭐⭐ Photo Enthusiasts Sunset at Little Jinshan Tower, stunning light and shadow 3. Three Wonders Line 4h ⭐⭐⭐ History Buffs See the barrier walls, inscribed bricks, and horse-blocking stones 4. West Line Hike 4h ⭐⭐⭐ Hiking Beginners Enter from West Gate, fewer people, peaceful 5. East Line Highlights 4.5h ⭐⭐⭐⭐ My Recommendation Big & Little Jinshan Towers + East River’s First Waterfall My Choice (Route 5 Detailed): Middle Gate → Brick Tower Entrance → Little Jinshan Tower → Big Jinshan Tower → Descend at Houchuan Entrance - Reason: This section is the “beauty spot” of Jinshanling, with the densest enemy towers and the widest views. You can capture the Great Wall’s grandeur and see its original landscape, with moderate difficulty. 📸 Must-Visit Photo Spots 1. Sunrise Sea of Clouds (Big/Little Jinshan Towers): Enter at 4 AM, climb to the top and watch the sun rise from the clouds — totally worth the early wake-up. 2. Inscribed Brick Walls: Many bricks are engraved with inscriptions like “Fifth Year of Wanli,” living fossils of Ming military craftsmanship, rarely seen elsewhere. 3. Barrier Walls and Arches: The military defense system is well preserved near the General Tower and Western Region Tower, every shot tells a story of history. 💡 Practical Tips and Pitfalls to Avoid 1. Sunrise Gear: It’s very cold and windy on the mountain top at dawn. Wear a down jacket or windbreaker. Bring a flashlight or headlamp as some sections have no lighting. 2. Transportation Tips: · Self-driving: Make sure to navigate to “Simatai Exit,” not “Jinshanling Service Area” or “Jinshanling Toll Station” to avoid detours. · Return: It’s hard to get a taxi after closing time, so self-driving is most flexible; if taking the shuttle, check the last bus time (usually before 4 PM). 3. Ticket Re-entry: If you want to see both sunrise and sunset, ask about a re-entry ticket when buying to avoid paying twice. 4. Nearby Attractions: If you have time, combine with Gubei Water Town (right next door) or stay overnight at Chengde’s Mountain Resort to experience the slow life of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. If you, like me, want a less crowded, wild, and photogenic Great Wall, Jinshanling is definitely your top choice. See you on the mountain top when the apricot blossoms bloom in May! These towers are iconic landmarks here. · Houchuankou: From here you can descend the mountain, about 30-40 minutes walk to the exit. 🥾 Advanced Hiking/Adventure Route Zhuanduo Pass → West Five-Eyed Tower (West Section) · This part of the wall is less restored and more original, with some collapsed sections, suitable for adventure lovers but requires caution. 📸 Photography Routes · Sunrise: It’s recommended to stay overnight inside the scenic area or enter right at 4:30 AM to secure a spot at Xiaojinshan Tower or General’s Tower. · Sunset: The West Five-Eyed Tower area is a great spot for sunset photography. ⚠️ Practical Tips 1. Gear: Be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes or hiking boots! Some sections of the Great Wall are steep. Bring a hat, sunscreen, enough water, and snacks as there are few supply points on the mountain. 2. Accommodation: There are many farmhouses inside and outside the scenic area with affordable prices (about 70-150 RMB/person). Staying near the entrance is most convenient for sunrise photography. There are also upscale options like Anaya Jinshanling (not far from the scenic area, with valley hot springs). 3. Combined Trips: Jinshanling is close to Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall (about 20 minutes by car). If you have enough time, plan a 2-day 1-night trip to enjoy Gubei Water Town’s night view and night tour of Simatai Great Wall. 4. Stamina Management: Although Jinshanling is beautiful, the ups and downs are physically demanding. It’s recommended to take the cable car (directly to Xiaojinshan Tower) or descend at Houchuankou without forcing yourself to complete the entire route. 5. Jinshanling Great Wall, located in Luanping, Hebei, is the essence of the Ming Great Wall supervised by Qi Jiguang🏯. It stretches 10.5 kilometers with 67 enemy towers, each uniquely designed. The parapet walls, inscribed bricks, and qilin spirit screens are known as the three wonders📜. It winds along the Yanshan mountain ridge🌄, with morning sea of clouds☁️ and sunset glowing like molten gold🌇. The ruins, over 400 years old, carry a profound sense of history, appearing far more majestic and grand than the restored and leveled sections of the Great Wall. Compared to the crowds at Badaling👥 and the commercialized Mutianyu🏪, Jinshanling stands out for its pristine nature and tranquility🍃. Here, there are no overwhelming crowds stealing the spotlight, no noisy shops disturbing your peace. You can quietly touch the texture of the wall and listen to the echoes of history. It is a paradise for photography lovers📸, with sunrises, seas of clouds, and starry skies all making for stunning shots; it is also a hiker’s haven🥾, where every step reveals a different ancient Great Wall scenery. This is the grandeur and poetry the Great Wall should embody❤️.
