Ended up in Kuldīga, a small town with a lot of wooden history and very few people, which is exactly my kind of destination. I spent the day walking along the Venta river and through the old town, logging about 18,200 steps on some very unforgiving cobblestones (my ankles are still protesting). As a history nerd, I appreciated that Kuldīga joined the Hanseatic League back in 1368. You can still see that old, wealthy trading history in the preserved timber buildings, which finally got UNESCO world heritage status in 2023. After leaving Lübeck Train Station and passing through the bus terminal, not long after, a thick and majestic city gate made of dark red bricks came into view a few hundred meters away. It is the representative building that has stood in Lübeck since the 15th century: Holsten Gate.
