Alright travelers, gather round because I've got a hot take and a story that genuinely changed how I pick destinations. Lingshan Scenic Area. Yep, that's it. No fancy international marketing campaign, no viral TikTok moment, no influencer posing with a ring light. Just a mountain in Henan that quietly knocked me off my feet. Here's what happened. I was road-tripping through central China with a buddy, basically doing the "throw a dart at a map" approach. Lingshan popped up on a local food blog — mentioned in passing next to a noodle recommendation — and we thought, why not? Pulled up, paid the entrance fee, and walked in expecting... honestly? A mediocre day hike. NOPE. The trails wind through this ancient forest that feels like stepping into a Studio Ghibli film. Massive trees dripping with moss, stone paths worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims, and this constant sound of water somewhere you can't quite locate. We hiked for hours and passed maybe a dozen people total. A DOZEN. I kept checking my phone like, "Are we actually allowed to be here alone?" But the real moment? We stopped at a ridge overlook and this elderly woman was selling hand-picked wild herbs from a woven basket. She didn't speak much Mandarin, we didn't speak much Henan dialect, but she insisted we try this herbal tea she'd brewed on a tiny portable stove. It tasted like earth and honey and something I still can't describe. We sat there chatting through gestures and laughs for twenty minutes. She waved us off like we were family. That's why Lingshan is criminally underrated. It's got geological formations that rival any national park, spiritual history going back thousands of years, and zero pretension. The infrastructure? Basic. The crowds? Basically nonexistent. The vibes? Immaculate. So here's my question for you all — have you ever followed a random food blog tip or a stranger's offhand recommendation that led to your absolute favorite travel memory? I'm convinced the best trips start from the weirdest, most accidental leads. Also, if you've been to Lingshan or know similar "quiet giant" mountains in China — drop them. I'm building a list. 👇 #underratedspots

The gateway to southern Henan, at the foot of the Dabie Mountains, many people overlook Xinyang when they think of Henan. It lacks the rugged vastness of northern cities and instead holds the gentle charm of the Jiangnan region. The Huai River flows through the city, surrounded by continuous forests and clear lakes, making it a rare gentle water town in central China. [Panoramic view of Nanwan Lake, mist covering the lake surface] No need to travel far south to Jiangnan to find a lake of clear water. Nanwan Lake is more than a scenic spot; it’s the backdrop of life for Xinyang locals. Thousands of acres of water stretch out, dotted with lush green islands. In the early morning, mist drifts over the water as fishing boats slowly glide across the lake. In the afternoon, sitting by the shore with the lake breeze, locals often bring a pot of Xinyang Maojian tea to quietly while away half a day. Unlike heavily commercialized lakes, this place retains a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. The fresh fish from the lakeside fishing villages is a unique gift from this water area. [Chicken Mountain forest trail, distant view of century-old villas] Chicken Mountain, a hidden summer retreat deep in the Dabie Mountains. Unlike many famous mountains known for their steep peaks, Chicken Mountain’s charm lies in the blend of forest and century-old architecture. The international villas from the late Qing and early Republic eras are nestled among green trees, with red tile roofs and stone walls blending into the forest. The summer mountain air is cool, and walking along the shaded trails, you hear only birdsong and the wind. From the summit, you can see the scenery of Henan and Hubei provinces. The quiet forest is far from the noise, perfect for slow walks without rushing to check off spots. [Shihegang tea mountain terraces, tea farmers picking tea] To understand Xinyang, you must first understand a Maojian tea garden. The tea mountains of Shihegang and Dongjiahe stretch in layers. In spring, tender buds cover the hills in green, while in autumn and winter, the tea trees are steady and deep green. Xinyang Maojian tea is known for being fine, round, glossy, straight, and covered with many white hairs. From the mountain tea trees to the cup of tea, it carries centuries of cultivation by the people of southern Henan. When you enter the tea mountains, don’t just take photos—quietly feel the mountain breeze carrying a faint tea fragrance. Locals have tended these tea mountains for generations, picking tea at sunrise and roasting it at sunset, simple and enduring. [Ancient stone street and old houses in Xihe ancient village] Hidden deep in the Dabie Mountains are low-key ancient villages, with Xihe ancient village as a prime example. The winding bluestone paths lead forward, century-old houses built along the mountain, and a creek flows slowly around the village. Without crowds of tourists, elders sit chatting at their doorsteps, and chickens and ducks stroll through the alleys. Leisurely walking the ancient lanes, touching the weathered earth walls, you can feel a slow life far from the city’s hustle. Spring brings wildflowers across the hills, autumn paints the forests in layers of color, and each season has its own charm. [A corner of Lingshan Temple, an ancient mountain temple] Surrounded by mountains, Lingshan Temple has stood quietly for a thousand years. This remote mountain temple is far from the bustling incense and noise of the city. Ancient trees tower overhead, and clear springs flow. Without excessive commercialization, stepping into the temple brings an involuntary calm. Climb the mountain to pray, listen to the bell sounds in the forest, and watch the ancient trees—perfect for finding a quiet place to briefly ease your mind. Located in Xinyang County, near Luoyang and the Longmen Grottoes, Lingshan Temple is an ancient Northern Wei temple with a history of over 1,500 years. As one of the four great ancient temples of the Central Plains, it served as a national temple during both the Tang and Ming dynasties; even Princess Jianning, daughter of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, took her vows here as a nun. Zhu Yuanzhang originally became a monk at Huangjue Temple, but after famine struck due to war, he was forced to beg. He wandered to Lingshan Temple, where he collapsed from extreme hunger and heat but was fortunately saved. He stayed at the temple to receive guidance from the monks, eventually using it as a stronghold to establish the Ming Cult and spread its teachings. In the late Yuan dynasty, the imperial court dispatched troops to surround the temple and capture Zhu Yuanzhang. The monks helped him hide at the bottom of a deep well in the courtyard, breathing through a hollow bamboo tube. Surviving this ordeal made the future Ming dynasty possible. This well was later named the Hidden Dragon Well (also known as the Holy Well or the Submerged Dragon Well), and today, visitors wash their hands with its water to ward off bad luck. After ascending the throne, Zhu Yuanzhang personally visited Lingshan Temple, bestowed half of an imperial carriage, and imperially inscribed the plaque "Shengshou Zen Temple." Remarkably, this plaque was the only relic to survive the Cultural Revolution intact. A unique feature of this temple is that monks and nuns reside together, and laypeople can practice Buddhism here without shaving their heads. The six main halls enshrine various immortals and Buddhas from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. This site is also an important landmark of the Red Revolution. Behind the temple lies the picturesque Piaobaibu (Bleached Cloth) Waterfall. In front of the Patriarch Hall, there are ancient cypresses planted upside down, and by the south wall of the backyard stands a millennium-old ginkgo tree, legendarily planted by Princess Jianning of the Tang dynasty. Additionally, the temple houses a Sanskrit stone statue of Shakyamuni and statues of the Eighteen Arhats, brought back to China from India by the abbot during the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty.

These 3 places in Xinyang, even locals don’t want to share Having lived in Xinyang for so many years, there are some places I really don’t want to reveal, afraid that too many people will change their charm. But keeping them to myself is too hard, so I’ll share them all with you at once. 🍃 Wenxin tea village, a mountain of green to refresh your eyes This place is definitely my secret spot, so healing. The entire tea garden stretches along the hillside as far as the eye can see. Rows of tender green tea bushes are perfectly neat, every photo looks like a masterpiece. Spring is the best time to visit. Before and after Qingming Festival, the tea leaves are so tender they drip with water, and the air is filled with the scent of tea. You can follow the tea farmers up the mountain to pick tea, carrying a small bamboo basket for a truly authentic experience. After picking, you can visit the tea processing workshop to watch the tea master stir-fry the leaves live. The fresh aroma fills your nose and clears your mind. Sit in the teahouse halfway up the mountain and sip freshly fried Maojian tea while gazing at the green hills. Time seems to slow down. Be sure to try the tea feast in the village—tea scrambled eggs and tea-flavored chicken. The fragrance is fresh and never greasy, completely changing my perception of tea dishes. Wear light-colored clothes; photos in the tea garden look especially magical. ⛰️ Lingshan scenic area, unbelievably peaceful Lingshan is where I’ve been hiking since childhood, and it still feels comfortable now. The mountain isn’t very tall, but the dense vegetation feels like a primeval forest. In summer, it’s several degrees cooler than outside—a natural air conditioner for sure. The highlight is Lingshan Temple at the summit, hidden in the mist and clouds. When the bell rings, the sound echoes through the valley, instantly calming your mind. The ancient ginkgo tree in front of the temple is said to be over a thousand years old. In autumn, its golden leaves cover the ground, breathtakingly beautiful. The hiking trails are well maintained, suitable for both elderly and children. There’s a viewing platform halfway up where you can overlook the entire Xinyang city. The mountain air is incredibly fresh; a few deep breaths feel like your lungs are being cleansed. After descending, enjoy a bowl of hot dry noodles at the foot of Lingshan. The noodles are chewy and springy, and the sesame sauce is rich and smooth, instantly replenishing the calories burned on the hike. Remember to bring a light jacket; the temperature difference in the mountains is big. Don’t ask me how I know. Which of these places excites you the most? Grab your friends and head out now~✨
