Langmu Temple
Langmusi, a slice of Tibetan life
Halfway between Lanzhou in Gansu province and Chengdu in Sichuan lies Langmusi, a small border town famed for its Tibetan monasteries and surrounding mountains. You can get here by bus from either Lanzhou or Chengdu in about 6 to 8 hours.
Although there is really only one main street here, you can still find lots of places to stay such as hotels and hostels. The place is quite popular among Chinese tourists, so you won't have to look far for accommodation.
The same goes for food. All along the main street, there are plenty of small restaurants. You won't find a KFC or McDonald's here, but that is a good thing as you can discover the local cuisine. There are several Tibetan restaurants where you can have yak meat or momos, but my favorite is the yak yogurt.
You won't be bored in Langmusi. You can easily spend a couple of days here exploring the monasteries and climbing the mountains such as the red rock mountain. A little further away from the town are some other beautiful places such as Zhagana, Zoige grasslands and flower lake. They are all easily accessible on a day trip. For something a little more active contact the Black Tent Cafe. They can take you on horse riding tours, wildlife watching tours or even let you fly in a hot air balloon.
Langmu Temple | Gannan must pass the pilgrimage site
Some people say "Do not come to Langmu Temple, equal to not to Gannan", which shows the importance of this Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Gannan. Langmu Temple is generally planned to travel in Gannan or North Sichuan. It is close to the Gannan Labrang Monastery to the north and the Zoige Grassland to the south.
[Recommended travel itinerary]
arrive at Langmu Temple at noon on the first day. In the afternoon, visit the Gedi Temple in Sichuan, then walk to the Bailongjiang Gorge and stay in the town at night. The next morning, I went to the Gandan Sai Chi Temple in Gansu. After that, you can take the Noons shuttle bus to leave Langmu Temple and go to other attractions in Gannan.
[What can I experience here?
1 Langmu Temple Riding
Langmu Temple There is a horse-riding tour nearby. The horse team has a consultation shop in the town. The price ranges from 150-400 yuan. The horse-riding destination includes the source of Bailongjiang and Hongshi. Cliffs, flowers and other places.
2 Langmu Temple celestial burial
is biased toward Gansu in Langmu Temple. There is a celestial burial platform on the back hill of Saiji Temple. The celestial burial in this area is more open and can be viewed by tourists. If you have the consent of your family, you can take pictures.
3 Turning the mountains and turning the water to the stupa
Tibetan people's devout faith is the snow lotus in the sky, full of pure to pure. They are kind and simple, and they only turn for the faith. An ancient turn of the road outside Xiahe Labrang Monastery is a lap I have to go to the Labrang Monastery every time. This is also one of my favorite temples.

Gansu Langmu Temple is located at 251 Geerdi Temple, Langmu Temple Town, Luqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province.
The full name of Gansu Langmu Temple is Dacang Langmu Saichi Temple. It is located in Langmu Temple Town, Luqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, at the junction of Gansu, Qinghai, and Sichuan provinces. At an altitude of 3,480 meters, it is the most important temple in the Amdo region after Ta'er Monastery and Labrang Monastery, and is known for its academic atmosphere.
The temple's architecture is unique, resplendent, and magnificent from a distance, making it a great photo spot. The temple has more than ten buildings, including the Great Sutra Hall, Maitreya Hall, Golden Tile Hall, Continuation Sutra Hall, Longevity Hall, Mahakala Hall, and Zen Tower, as well as five colleges of study: Wensi, Continuation, Kalachakra, Medicine, and Woodblock Printing. Behind the temple is a sky burial platform, the only one in Gannan that is open to visitors. Not for the faint-hearted.
Tickets for Gansu Langmu Temple are CNY 30 per person, and it is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The slope on the west side of Saichi Temple, where the Buddha is exposed to the sun, is a great place to take panoramic photos of the red stone cliff and the temple at sunset.
If you plan to visit Gansu Langmu Temple, it is recommended to check the local weather in advance and plan your trip accordingly. Also, be sure to respect local religious beliefs and cultural customs, and follow the temple's rules.
Langmusi: A spiritual home for poetry and the distance.
Langmusi, like a shining pearl, is embedded in the vast land of Gannan, shining with a mysterious and charming light in the scroll of history. Here is the intersection of poetry and the distance, and the resonance of the soul and nature.
🌌The legend of the Queen Mother of the West, weaving a thousand-year dream🌌
The Queen Mother of the West, the ancestor of the Chinese nation, her legend is like the clouds floating in the sky of Langmusi, light and mysterious. Here, every gust of wind seems to be telling her story, and every cloud seems to be carrying her emotions. It seems that you can hear her whispers and feel the gentleness and strength from ancient times, as if you are in a thousand-year dream.
🌸The footprints of the Fifth Living Buddha, paving the way for spiritual pilgrimage🌸
The Fifth Living Buddha, the embodiment of wisdom and compassion, his footprints are like every stone slab in Langmusi, solid and heavy. Here, it seems that you can see his devout figure and feel his persistence and firmness in faith. His wisdom is like the blue sky in Gannan, pure and lofty; his compassion is like the stream in the canyon, clear and warm. Follow his footprints, embark on a spiritual pilgrimage, and find inner peace and strength.
🌅The shock on the Buddha Sunning Platform, awakening the soul🌅
When the huge Buddha statue slowly unfolds in the sun, at that moment, the soul seems to be shocked by an invisible force. It is not only a visual shock, but also an awakening deep in the soul. It seems that you can hear the low chanting of the Buddha statue and feel the solemnity and sacredness from faith. At this moment, start thinking about the meaning of life, start understanding the power of faith, and start cherishing every moment.
🏞️The scroll of the Grand Canyon, depicting the natural poem🏞️
The Grand Canyon of Langmusi is like an unfinished poem, waiting for you to continue. The blue sky and white clouds, snow-capped mountains and grasslands, streams and lakes here are all the most sincere gifts from nature. They are like the strokes of a poet, depicting this land as picturesque. Here, you can put down all worries and constraints, and let your soul be truly released and nourished in the embrace of nature.
Langmusi is not just a scenic spot, it is more like a love poem written to the soul. Here, you can find the long-lost touch and warmth, and you can hear the voice and call in your heart. Every inch of land, every gust of wind, and every cloud here seem to be telling you about their thoughts and love.
In the embrace of Langmusi, feel the poetry and warmth from the depths of the soul. Here is the home of your soul and the harbor of your soul. Come to Langmusi and feel the beauty and tranquility from poetry and the distance. Langmusi·Luqu
I drove past this Tibetan village and was moved to tears by its beauty.
Gaxiu Tibetan Village is located in the west of Luqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province. It is a pure pastoral village on the plateau where Tibetans are the main ethnic group. Gaxiu Tibetan Village is located on a plateau at an altitude of 3,300 meters and has vast natural grasslands and rich natural resources. The village is famous for its unique Tibetan culture and ecological resources, and it has beautiful natural scenery and rich folk culture! It is also a good place to escape the summer heat. It was already very cold when we went there at the end of September! It's especially cool to go there in the hot summer! As someone who loves natural scenery, I really like it here! The air is pristine, and it's beautiful even on cloudy days 😍😍 It's also beautiful when shot with a camera without a filter 😍😍

🍂DAY1: Lanzhou → Ganjia Secret Realm → Labuleng Temple → Sangke Grassland → Luqu County
Get on the expressway from Lanzhou. Traffic in Lanzhou is relatively congested. It is recommended to set off early. Ganjia Secret Realm has received many negative reviews. You can decide whether to visit it or not. Labuleng Temple is located in the city. You can choose to park outside the scenic spot's parking lot. If you visit Labuleng Temple early in the morning, there is a free entry option: join the believers who go to turn the prayer wheels early in the morning to enter the temple. Sangke Grassland and other grasslands are all on the road. There are observation points set up at various points on the road. You can choose a suitable observation point or choose a place to get off the car to enjoy the scenery.
🍂DAY2: Luqu County → Guomang Wetland → Awancang Wetland → Niangma Temple → Jiuzhi County
On this self-driving tour in Gannan, you will encounter many wetland parks. These wetland parks have similar scenery, all with boardwalks and high-altitude observation points. Therefore, it is recommended to visit two or three wetland parks. On the way to Awancang Wetland Park, you will encounter a Huoerguori Observation Point. It is said that this observation point and Awancang Wetland are owned by the same boss. If you buy a ticket at one of the scenic spots, you can also visit the other scenic spot. This information has not been verified by us. Friends can verify it.
🍂DAY3: Jiuzhi County → Lianbao Yezhe → Hongyuan County Visiting Lianbao Yezhe takes 5 to 6 hours. Allow ample time for your visit. The best photography spot for Zhagaercuo Holy Lake is the 4520 Observation Deck.
🍂DAY4: Hongyuan County → Wachetalin → First Bend of the Yellow River → Little Duku Highway → Diebu County
Set off early to Wachetalin, then head to the First Bend of the Yellow River as soon as possible. This scenic spot is similar to other wetland parks in terms of structure, with boardwalks and high-altitude observation points. There are many boardwalks and high observation points, so allow enough time for your visit. Do not stay too long at the scenic spot, as you need to drive the Little Duku Highway while the sky is still bright.
🍂DAY5: Diebu County → Zhagana → Gongba Temple → Lanzhou Before entering the south gate of Zhagana, the staff will ask you questions. Make sure to clarify that you are passing through Zhagana on your way to a specific place in Zhuoni County. The Zhagana scenic area is 40 kilometers long and free to pass through within 3 hours. At normal speed and without traffic jams, it takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to pass through. You can allow more than 1 hour for sightseeing and photography.
🍁🍁🍁Special notes:
🍂1. Safe driving and vehicle violations: Pay attention to cattle and sheep on the road, do not exceed the speed limit. For minor vehicle violations, the local authorities will only issue warnings and not fines.
🍂2. Respect local religion and customs.
🍂3. The most beautiful scenery is on the road, not in the scenic spots.
🍂4. Try to follow the daily itinerary to maintain your self-driving progress.

Guomang Wetland, Nine-colored Gannan
Guomang Wetland is located beside National Highway 213 in Gahai Township, Luqu County, Gansu Province, at an altitude of 3562 meters. It is the source and water conservation area of the Tao River, the largest tributary of the Yellow River, and an important wintering habitat for migratory birds such as the black-necked crane. At this moment, Guomang Wetland is a beautiful autumn picture, with white clouds, fluttering prayer flags, and the interplay of grasslands, rivers, and lakes, also reflecting the beauty of the Nine Bends of the Yellow River.
The iconic building of Guomang Wetland is the red-crowned crane statue, located in the middle of the red-crowned crane viewing platform, which can be reached by a wooden plank road about one kilometer long. Admission is free and it is open all day. It is recommended to drive there, located beside National Highway 213.
Gannan
Gannan, officially known as Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, is located in the southwestern part of Gansu Province. It lies at the transitional zone between the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the western part of the Loess Plateau. It is the junction of Tibetan and Han cultural regions, known as the "Window of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau" and the "Springboard for Tibetan Modernization".
Gannan is the best travel destination for a first experience of the Tibetan region. In this area, with an average altitude of only 3000 meters, you won't be troubled by altitude sickness. The pleasant climate allows you to fully enjoy the blue sky, green grass, and the soul-stirring devout faith. Gannan is a paradise lost on earth.
Hezuo: The capital of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, with multiple buses directly to Lanzhou, Xiahe Labrang Monastery, and Luqu Langmu Monastery.
Xiahe: It holds a very important position in Gannan tourism, being the location of the famous Labrang Monastery. The vast majority of tourists to Gannan choose to transit through Xiahe.
Labrang Monastery: Labrang Monastery is a representative of tourism in Xiahe County, Gannan Prefecture. It is one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug sect and the religious center of the Amdo Tibetan region, housing the world's largest Tibetan academic institution.
Langmu Monastery: Langmu Monastery is the name of a small town, known as the "Little Switzerland of the East." The town is divided by the Bailong River (a small stream) into two parts: the northern bank belongs to Luqu, Gansu, and the southern bank belongs to Ruoergai, Sichuan.
The best time to travel to Gannan is from June to August. During this period, the average temperature in Gannan is 10-20°C, the warmest time of the year. The green grass, wildflowers, lush pastures, and vibrant colors make it the best time to appreciate the plateau scenery. It is a time not to be missed.
Gannan is located on the plateau, with significant temperature differences between day and night. Even in the warmest months of July and August, you need to wear fleece jackets, light sweaters, or coats in the morning and evening, while long and short-sleeved T-shirts are suitable for noon. The plateau's strong ultraviolet rays make sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, and umbrellas essential.
Have you ever traveled to Gannan, Gansu, and visited Gaxiu Village's Shai Jintan Tent City and Gahai Lake?
Traveling is a part of children's growth and life. Previously, I accompanied my sister on her graduation trip, and this time I am accompanying my younger sister on her elementary school graduation trip. We arrived in Lanzhou two days early and, with the company of friends, explored the two mountains and one river🙏... We did a city walk in Lanzhou, and then we embarked on a secret journey to Gannan, encountering thousand-year-old legends. Some say: if going to Tibet is an addiction, then Gannan is the best cure. I haven't been to Tibet yet, so I came to the Gannan Poetry Festival first.
Beautiful Gannan, with high mountains, flowing water, and colorful clouds, Gannan is by the Milky Way.🌟 Gannan, fully known as Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, is a region with beautiful natural scenery, rich ethnic culture, and important ecological status. I once saw a friend recommend Gannan for study tours and was moved by the blue sky, white clouds, grasslands, rivers, lakes, and Tibetan culture there. I always wanted to bring my younger sister. Last time, during my trip to Jiuquan, Gansu, I learned about the Gannan Poetry Festival. This hot summer season is perfect for a spontaneous trip to Gannan, with its grasslands and naturally beautiful scenery. Poetic Gansu, Silk Road wind for three thousand miles, Gesang flowers blooming, Gannan Poetry Festival awaits you. Here are two places I visited:
1. Gaxiu Village's Shai Jintan Tent City: Located in Luqu County, 1 kilometer south of Gaxiu Village, in the heart of the Luqu grassland, it consists of 108 Tibetan-style tents of various sizes arranged in a lotus flower shape. The entire tent city looks like a pure and beautiful white lotus, warmly welcoming guests from all directions. The tent city not only showcases traditional Tibetan architectural styles but also incorporates modern tourism elements, making it a highlight of the Gannan region. It is a great place to experience Tibetan customs and an important window to showcase Tibetan culture. Here, you can enjoy traditional Tibetan songs and dances, taste authentic Tibetan cuisine, and feel the rich Tibetan cultural atmosphere, having an unforgettable Tibetan-style trip. White, red, purple... flowers, lying on them, feeling the beauty of nature with your body, laughing and talking with family.
2. Gahai Lake: A pearl on the plateau, located in Gahai Township, Luqu County, the largest freshwater lake in the Gannan region, an important wetland on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The lake water is clear, with lush aquatic plants, surrounded by large swamps and several small lakes, forming a unique wetland ecosystem. Surrounded by mountains, the scenery is pleasant. We enjoyed the natural scenery together, and there are many birds inhabiting here. Dad took aerial photos here, capturing beautiful pictures of me and my mom, and a photographer left us with wonderful memories.
Gahai (ga) has various names in Tibetan, such as "Jiangtuocuo Gan," "Lejiashoum," and "Jiangcuo," meaning "ancient plateau lake" or "cold plateau lake." Local herders call it the "sacred lake of the plateau," and the Tibetan people love this land. We came and fell in love with Gannan too. This trip is not about rushing but about being intoxicated with nature.
In Gannan's embrace, we are not here to check off a list but to genuinely feel the gentleness of nature. Every step we take as a family👨👩👧👦 is filled with mystery, and every moment is full of charm. Relax, the sense of ease is fully expressed here. We found inner peace in Gannan, with scenery as beautiful as a painting, making it hard to leave. The grassland is beautiful, but being on the plateau, don't get too excited.
Tips:
1. Gannan is a plateau area with an average altitude of around 3,000 meters. Those with large lung capacity should be aware of altitude sickness and prepare glucose and oxygen bottles in advance.
2. The plateau area has large temperature differences between morning and evening, with occasional wind and rain. Remember to bring warm clothes, including fleece and jackets, to avoid catching a cold.
3. Pay attention to sun protection and mosquito repellent, and prevent acclimatization issues.
4. For those traveling with children, bring fruits, snacks, bread, water💦... dry food. The grassland is vast, and while filming🎬, you might lose track of time, so don't go hungry!

Langmu Temple in Oriental Switzerland
🌿Langmu Temple is both a place name and a temple name, located at the junction of Sichuan, Gansu, and Qinghai provinces.
🧩In the middle of Langmu Temple Town, there is a small creek of Bailong River less than 2 meters wide. To the north of the creek is Saichi Temple in Gannan, also called Langmu Temple. With large areas of golden roofs and yellow and white walls, it looks magnificent under the sunlight, and the entrance is free. To the south of the creek is the gray and white Geerdi Temple, also known as Sichuan Langmu Temple, with an entrance fee of 30 yuan per ticket.
🧩Gannan's Langmu Temple leads to the direction of the sky burial platform. Many crows hover in the sky here and often perch in rows on the eaves of the temple. On the surrounding rocky mountains, you can see many eagle nests, and eagles often soar in the sky. The scenery is very spectacular.
🧩On the Sichuan side of Langmu Temple, there are many attractions such as Tiger Cave, Fairy Cave, Langmu Temple Grand Canyon, and the relics of the flesh Buddha.
🧩The two temples are different from each other but very close, and you can visit both to experience them. Inside, there are many exquisite murals, Buddha statues, and you can also see the daily life of Tibetan monks.
🧩The two temples face each other across the river, surrounded by grasslands, forests, hills, and red cliffs, making the scenery very beautiful.

🌟Highlights:
The White Dragon emerges from the tiger's lair, still hiding the myriad landscapes within the countryside.
Traveling south from Lanzhou to the deepest part of Gannan Prefecture, one can hear the roaring sound of the source of the Bailong River from afar, and this beautiful mountain basin is Langmusi Town.
The ethnic groups living on both sides of the Die Mountains are very complex, and Langmusi Town is no exception. Here, compared to the pure Tibetan cultural areas, there is more of a Hehuang cultural flavor, which can be seen from the Hezhou-style mosque with strong ethnic features standing in the center of the town. However, the heart of the town is still the Dacang Namocui Gerdeng Temple and the Sich Temple, both of which belong to the Gelug sect, but there are very complex differences between them.
The rich folklore, the atmosphere that is not overly commercialized, and the unique scenery make Langmusi Town uniquely charming. Leaving the temple, walking into the deep Namocui Gorge amidst the curling smoke, one can ponder the ultimate destination of this stream — Chongqing Chaotianmen.
Gerdeng Temple
The name Langmusi is the alias of this temple on the Sichuan side. Compared to the glittering Sich Temple on the opposite bank, Gerdeng Temple is more restrained. However, the influence of this temple should not be underestimated; it has a significant impact in both Aba and Gannan prefectures, with eighteen branch temples and hundreds of monks. Although there are many halls in the temple, not many are open to the public, only the Langmusi Cultural Museum and the Zunsheng Hall are available for visiting. Inside the Zunsheng Hall, there is a revered flesh body relic.
Walking to the back mountain of the temple, one can overlook the town, where many monks and locals stroll, and many deer play among them, adding a touch of wilderness. If you know a local, you can ask them to lead you into the temple, which can save you the ticket price.
Sich Temple
This temple, belonging to Gansu, is probably the first impression most people have of Langmusi. This temple is a branch of the Tashilhunpo Monastery in Lhasa. The magnificent halls stretch down the hillside, with the golden hall echoing the small town under the sunlight and the distant red cliffs, solemn and beautiful. There are more halls open here, and one can spend an entire afternoon touring.
Namocui Gorge
Walking into the deep mountains in the direction of the Sichuan temple, one reaches the source of the Bailong River in the gorge. Not far into the valley, one can see a tower with arrows, marking the location of the Fairy Cave. The name 'Langmu' originates from a peculiar stalactite in the Fairy Cave that resembles a fairy. Legend has it that fierce tigers once roamed here, and after being enlightened by the Guru Rinpoche, they transformed into fairies to guard the area and gained the faith of the people. Going deeper into the gorge, one enters a local pasture, where one can also ride horses and enjoy the gorge, making it suitable for a leisurely day of hiking.
The town of Langmusi is equally lively and harmonious, with a mosque from the late Qing Dynasty.
The 313 provincial road runs through the town, and at the fork of the provincial road and the main street of the town, one can wait for buses to Lanzhou, Xiahe, and other places.
The Zecha Stone Forest, hidden deep in Gannan, is a place worth traversing mountains and valleys to visit
The Zecha Stone Forest is located 52 kilometers southeast of Luqu County in Laren Guan Township's Zecha Village. It is a siliceous limestone landscape formed by the uplift of the Earth's crust, and it is a national 4A-level tourist attraction.
Zecha, in Tibetan, is called 'Ze Cang,' where 'Ze' means antelope and 'Cang' means home (also implying a nest or den). Thus, it translates to the homeland of antelopes. This area was once a dense primeval forest, home to countless rare birds and animals, and the antelopes, considered as spirits and symbols of good fortune on the plateau, were found everywhere, hence the name 'Ze Cang' (Zecha).
Entering Zecha is like stepping into a grand natural landscape of the plateau. The air is fresh, the mountains are uniquely shaped, the forests are dense, and birds sing all around. The Requ River valley flows gently, wildflowers bloom, and bees and butterflies dance in the air. Especially the scattered peaks and strange rocks, which stand tall with their thousands of postures as if carved by nature's own chisel, are truly awe-inspiring.
The Zecha Stone Forest is a karst landscape formed by the action of dissolution, also known as a karst topography. It was formed by the limestone from the Lower Carboniferous period about 300 million years ago through geological actions like dissolution. On the side slopes of the gullies, especially where vertical joints in the rock layers are well-developed, the landscape was shaped by dissolution and water erosion into countless cone-shaped, tower-shaped, or other uniquely independent peaks. After subsequent uplifts, the peaks were rounded, standing proudly as variously shaped strange rocks.
Continuing forward, one reaches the 'Stone Gate Skyline,' a narrow pass as high as several dozen meters, which is so strategically important that it is said to be impassable even by a large army if guarded by a single man. The murmuring stream flows through the stone gate, which is the essential path to enter the stone forest. Walking along the wooden plank road through the Skyline, the path winds, and suddenly in front of you appear a waterfall and the Yangsu Lake, which, according to legend, is where King Gesar subdued the water monster.
Returning to the visitor center through the dense forest valley, one can take a small train to the observation deck at an altitude of 3500 meters. The train ride takes 20 minutes, and along the way, you can enjoy the wildflowers that cover the slopes and the changing perspectives of the stone forest landscape.
From a distance, you can see the stone forest landscapes such as 'Spirit Monkey Watching the Moon,' 'Tang Monk and Disciples,' 'Camel Peak,' 'Snow Leopard,' 'Potala Palace,' and so on. They are vivid and lifelike, each infused with the legendary stories of the Tibetan hero King Gesar, truly breathtaking.
The Zecha Stone Forest is not only known for its towering cliffs, naturally sculpted rocks, and unique formations, as well as the dense forests and beautiful plateau grasslands, but also for its ancient and magical stories. It is a highly recommended tourist attraction that should not be missed on a trip to Gannan.

1. The general route in Gannan is to enter and exit through Lanzhou, and it's better to take a loop. You can also consider entering and exiting through Lanzhou and Chengdu, but a single line might mean missing some scenery;
2. Public transportation is not recommended, as it is very inconvenient. Self-driving or carpooling is the main way.
