Tested 8 secret spots for traveling with kids—few crowds, cool weather, and affordable
People say summers in the south are unbearably hot, but there are 8 places so cool you’ll wonder if you took a wrong turn in the season. Few people, beautiful scenery, low cost, and most importantly, kids have fun while adults don’t have to chase after them with water or wipes. I’ve gathered all the spots I’ve been to and the mistakes I’ve made, so just follow this guide.
01 Zhaoqing | Guangdong
When bringing kids to Zhaoqing, don’t rush to Dinghu Mountain. First, stay a night by Xing Lake. After 5:30 PM, the sun slants down, and the lake looks like it’s sprinkled with silver. Rent a pedal boat and drift slowly. When the breeze blows, the heat disappears. Early the next morning, enter Xing Lake Scenic Area through the east gate. It’s less crowded, shaded, and stroller-friendly.
⏰ Arrive before 9 AM to catch the egrets leaving their nests on the lake island. They fly close to the water, and kids won’t want to look away.
🍜 At noon, leave the scenic area and head to the street in Yanqian Village. Pick any shop selling wrapped steamed rice dumplings. Glutinous rice wrapped with mung beans and pork belly, savory and soft—much better than what’s sold inside the park.
⚠️ Don’t buy pre-cut fruit cups at the park entrance. They’re double the price and often disappointing.
02 Ya’an | Sichuan
Ya’an truly lives up to its name as a summer retreat city, with average summer temperatures just above 20°C. With kids, head straight to Bifeng Gorge. Take the sightseeing bus to the panda base first, watch the pandas, then walk down the gorge. The panda park is most active in the morning. Arrive before 9:30 AM to see them munching bamboo loudly. Kids can sit and watch for half an hour without moving. After the pandas, walk the gorge boardwalk. It’s downhill all the way, easy on the legs, with cool creek water right beside you.
🍜 At noon, have a bowl of Ya’an tata noodles inside the park. Handmade and freshly pulled, with a fresh broth that kids can enjoy.
⚠️ After 3 PM, the gorge gets darker, making photos less appealing. Try to finish the main trail in the morning when traveling with kids.
🚄 A taxi from Ya’an station to Bifeng Gorge takes about 40 minutes and costs around 60 yuan. Avoid unlicensed cars waiting at the entrance.
03 Dandong | Liaoning
Dandong, a border town, stays cool in summer like it has natural air conditioning. With kids, I recommend a relaxed two-day itinerary: Phoenix Mountain plus the city riverside. On day one, hike Phoenix Mountain in the morning. Avoid the challenging Laoniubei trail; take the middle loop instead. The steps are gentle, and you can reach the summit in two hours. The wind is strong enough to blow your hat off, instantly refreshing you. In the afternoon, descend and head to the Yalu River Broken Bridge. The bullet holes are still visible, and kids will ask why the bridge is broken—perfect for an on-site history lesson. Don’t rush to leave at dusk. Walk north along the riverside path. You can clearly see the North Korean village across the river. At sunset, the whole river glows golden red. On day two, visit Kuandian Estuary or Lijiang Village. Lijiang is farther, but in summer, sandbars appear in the river, the water is shallow, and kids can splash and catch small fish. ⚠️ Remember to bring an extra set of clothes.
🍜 At night back in Dandong city, find an old shop serving Korean cold noodles. Buckwheat noodles with icy broth cool you down instantly.
04 Ningde | Fujian
Ningde is often underestimated. With kids, focus on water activities. On day one, visit Baishuiyang·Yuanyang Creek. The shallow water plaza at Baishuiyang is just ankle-deep with a smooth stone bottom. Kids can run barefoot in the water while adults sit and soak their feet. Spend the whole afternoon like this.
⚠️ Don’t wear flip-flops; the stones are slippery. Velcro water shoes are best. On day two, go to Taimu Mountain. This mountain is very family-friendly with a cable car, so no tiring climbs. At the top, the Couple Peaks and One Line Sky formations let kids explore like they’re on an adventure. Save day three for Xiapu. Beiqi mudflats are great for early risers to watch the sunrise, but if kids can’t get up early, no worries. Visit around 3 or 4 PM to enjoy the bamboo poles and light reflections on the mudflats.
🍜 At night in Xiapu town, eat seafood. Order a plate of scallion oil snails and a bowl of seafood noodles. Around 50 yuan per person will leave you full.
📍 Remember, water sold at the Taimu Mountain entrance is twice as expensive. Buy it in town beforehand.
05 Guiyang | Guizhou
Guiyang stays outside the “air conditioner’s reach” all summer, and you still need a light blanket at night. With kids, start day one at Tianhetan Tourist Resort. Take a boat into the cave where the cool air is intense. Kids wrapped in jackets will say they’re cold, but outside it’s just the right heat. This hot-cold contrast feels refreshing. In the afternoon, visit Huaxi Park. Rent a tandem bike and ride along the river. Kids can step into the shallow water.
On day two, explore Qingyan Ancient Town. Enter through the south gate to avoid crowds. Climb part of the city wall, then stroll the main street. Braised pig’s feet are a must-try—tender and falling off the bone, even kids can gnaw on them. In the afternoon, go to Gaopo Yunding Grassland. It’s high altitude and windy, with wildflowers everywhere. Kids can run freely.
⚠️ There’s no shade on the grassland. The sun is strongest from 2 to 4 PM. Be sure to apply enough sunscreen.
🍜 At night back in Guiyang city, try sour fish soup. Its sour and spicy flavor whets the appetite. Kids can soak rice in the soup and eat two bowls.
06 Baoting County | Hainan
Who says you can’t visit Hainan in summer? Baoting, tucked at the foot of Wuzhi Mountain, is several degrees cooler than Sanya, and the rainforest is full of shade. With kids, head straight to Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Area. Take the “waterfall stepping and playing” route with a guide. Kids wear grass shoes and climb along the stream, splashing water everywhere. Their laughter is louder than the water.
⚠️ This route requires advance booking, and kids must be at least 1.2 meters tall. In the afternoon, visit Binglanggu Li and Miao Cultural Tourism Area. Watch Li grandmas weave Li brocade. Kids can try spinning thread themselves, which holds their attention better than just watching.
🍜 At noon inside the park, eat bamboo tube rice. Glutinous rice mixed with minced meat and spices. When you open the bamboo tube, the aroma hits you instantly.
📍 For lodging, stay in Baoting town. It’s close to both parks and half the price of staying inside the parks. You can also stroll around Qixian Square at night.
07 Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai
This place has an average summer temperature below 20°C, a true summer escape. With kids, don’t overdo it—just visit Guide and Riyue Mountain. On day one, go to Guide National Geopark. The Danxia landform is as red as a fiery sunset. Kids will ask if it’s Mars. The park has electric carts, so you don’t have to walk much. In the afternoon, when the light is good, the mountain colors are most vivid, no filter needed for photos. On day two, visit Riyue Mountain. It’s high altitude and windy. Dress kids in a windbreaker. Prayer flags flutter in the wind at the summit, and yaks dot the distant grasslands like black beans.
⚠️ Riyue Mountain is 3,200 meters high. If kids run too fast, they may get short of breath. Keep a slow pace.
🍜 At noon in Guide town, have a bowl of lamb intestine noodles with a cup of brewed tea. It warms the stomach and refreshes.
🚄 It’s about a 2-hour drive from Xining. A day trip is enough.
08 Pingdingshan | Henan
Pingdingshan looks low-key, but the Yao Mountain–Central Plains Buddha area is genuinely cool in summer. With kids, stay at a farmhouse at the foot of Yao Mountain for just over 100 yuan a night. Open the window and see the mountain. Early the next morning, enter Yao Mountain Scenic Area and take the cable car up. The wind at the top is strong enough to blow you away, but the view is excellent—layered peaks and clouds beneath your feet. Descend via the Qinglong Back trail, a boardwalk clinging to the cliff. Kids will be both scared and curious, making it thrilling. In the afternoon, visit the Central Plains Buddha. The statue is over 100 meters tall. Looking up from below will make your neck sore. Kids will keep asking if it’s real.
🍜 At night back at the farmhouse, ask the owner to stew a local chicken. The soup is fresh and the meat tender. Kids will drink two bowls.
⚠️ The Yao Mountain cable car stops running at 4:30 PM. Don’t get stuck trying to get down late.
I truly believe each of these eight places is perfect for traveling with kids. If I had to pick three, I’d recommend Ya’an, Dandong, and Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture—one is truly cool, one has stories, and one feels otherworldly.
