Centered on strengthening the awareness of the Chinese national community, the event brought together local mainstream media reporters, university experts, and online influencers to explore the frontlines of the plateau. We deeply uncovered vivid practices in ethnic unity, cultural and tourism integration, and red heritage across the prefecture, presenting a comprehensive and multi-dimensional story of the interactions and exchanges among the various ethnic groups on the Madu Plateau. On the first day, we arrived in Madu County. Located at the core of the Yellow River’s source area, Madu is known as the “county of a thousand lakes.” Its cold and vast plateau landscape, dotted with numerous lakes of all sizes, creates a unique ecological picture. Local ethnic communities have protected the mother river’s source for generations, achieving solid results in ecological conservation and ethnic unity. Our first stop was the stunning Dongge Cuona Lake. Dongge Cuona Lake lies in an important water source conservation area of the upper Yellow River. Covering about 247 square kilometers, it is a well-known large freshwater lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In Tibetan, “Dongge Cuona” means “black lake formed by a thousand tents.” Legend has it that ancient Tibetan herders camped here with over a thousand tents surrounding the lake. At night, the tents looked like ink spots floating on the water, giving the lake its name. As part of the Sanjiangyuan National Park, Dongge Cuona Lake plays a vital role in water conservation, soil preservation, and biodiversity maintenance. It is an indispensable link in the Yellow River basin’s ecological chain. We arrived at the lakeshore around noon. After launching a drone, the full view of Dongge Cuona Lake gradually unfolded before us. The clear water shifted in color from near to far, with transparent emerald green in the shallow areas and deep sapphire blue in the depths. The underwater terrain was clearly visible through the crystal-clear water. Surrounding the lake were continuous bare rock mountain ranges. Above the clear blue sky, large cumulus clouds stretched freely, their shadows gently rippling on the lake surface. The lakeside wetlands and meadows stretched endlessly, with winding streams tracing graceful curves over the green carpet. The water network was extensive and the aquatic plants lush, forming a grand yet gentle highland landscape painting. Several narrow peninsulas and isolated islands in the lake’s center are the lake’s most lively highlights. At the protection area’s management station, we interviewed Han Changpeng, the head of the ecological protection station, who shared the daily routine of guarding this high-altitude frontline. Dongge Cuona Lake sits at an average altitude above 4,000 meters. The harsh climate, cold and oxygen-poor environment, and very short frost-free period make the natural conditions extremely tough. Han Changpeng and his colleagues conduct daily patrols around the lake, monitoring water level changes, identifying ecological risks, and discouraging illegal grazing and unauthorized entry. They work tirelessly to protect the habitats of rare wild animals such as the Tibetan wild donkey, black-necked crane, and bar-headed goose. To safeguard this source of clear water, they stay away from the city and their families for long periods, rooted in remote pastoral areas. Exposure to wind and sun and trekking over mountains and rivers have become routine. After decades of ecological restoration and strict management, Dongge Cuona Lake’s water and grass have become more abundant, bird populations continue to grow, and the watershed’s water conservation capacity steadily improves. The ecological foundation of the upper Yellow River shines brighter. In ordinary roles with long-term dedication, this group of plateau ecological guardians measures every inch of the lakeshore with their footsteps and builds a solid ecological defense line for Sanjiangyuan with their responsibility. The trip to Dongge Cuona Lake not only revealed the area’s unique ecological beauty but also witnessed the community spirit of Guoluo’s ethnic groups united in protecting green waters and mountains and building a better home together. Admission is tens of yuan, and you can camp overnight on the mountaintop meadow. In the evening, you can watch the sea of clouds roll over the ridge, and at night, the Milky Way hangs overhead. ⚠️ The temperature difference on the mountain is significant. Even in August, you'll need a fleece jacket at night. Don't just wear a T-shirt and tough it out. There's a gravel road on the way up, which can scrape cars with low chassis. It's recommended to park at the foot of the mountain and take the scenic shuttle bus up, which costs 30 yuan for a round trip. 📍 The Lianhua Lake service station halfway up the mountain has hot water and simple meals. Instant noodles with sausages are available. Nothing is sold at the summit, so prepare in advance. 02 Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan Bingzhongluo and Nanji Luo, two names that are easily confused, offer completely different experiences. Bingzhongluo is a viewpoint for the First Bend of the Nujiang River. There's no admission fee. Standing high up, you can see the river make a big turn, and when it's foggy, it looks like a traditional Chinese ink painting. Nanji Luo is a hiking trail, a full day's round trip. Slow hikers might question their life choices, but the moment you see the alpine lake cluster, it's worth it. ⚠️ Entering Nanji Luo requires a guide. Find a local villager to lead the way, costing around 200 yuan. Don't venture in alone. 🚄 There's a shuttle bus from Gongshan County to Bingzhongluo, 20 yuan per person, and the journey takes one hour. From August to September, the river water is emerald green. The rainy season has just passed, so the water volume is high, making it much more beautiful than during the dry season. 03 Zhongwei City | Ningxia Shapotou is famous and expensive, but Gaomiao Baonan Temple is in the city center and free. Gaomiao is an ancient architectural complex built on a high platform. The stairs are so narrow that only one person can pass at a time. From the top floor, you can overlook the entire old city of Zhongwei. After 5 PM, the light dyes the brick walls a warm yellow, perfect for photos without filters. If you visit Shapotou, don't buy a package ticket. Just buy a single admission ticket to enter the scenic area and explore the Yellow River area and desert area separately. 📍 The desert area is less windy after 4 PM, and walking barefoot on the sand isn't hot. Sandboarding costs 40 yuan separately, which is more cost-effective than the bundled items in package tickets. For accommodation, choose an area near the Drum Tower. The old city night market is just a short walk away. Enjoy roasted lamb leg with Eight Treasure Tea, costing around 60 yuan per person until you're full. 04 Chengdu City | Sichuan Chengdu is hot from August to September, but Tiantaishan and Mount Qingcheng are great places to escape the heat. Tiantaishan is in Qionglai, a two-hour drive from the city. The mountain has waterfalls and fireflies. In early September, you can still see scattered fireflies, most concentrated near Xiaojiawan. Mount Qingcheng is divided into the front mountain and the back mountain. The front mountain has more Taoist temples and expensive admission. The back mountain has wilder natural scenery and half-price admission. Those with good stamina can go directly to the back mountain. Anren Ancient Town is west of Chengdu. The Liu's Manor complex of Republic of China-era buildings is worth exploring, but don't buy the so-called "Wenjun wine" in the town; it's twice the price of supermarkets. For the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, go early. It opens at 7:30 AM. Arrive before 8 AM to see pandas eating bamboo. After 10 AM, they usually lie down and sleep. ⚠️ It gets extremely crowded on weekends, so try to go on a weekday. 05 Bijie City | Guizhou Zhijindong Cave is a karst cave. You first walk down a slope, and the temperature drops sharply to 18 degrees Celsius. You'll need to wear long sleeves even in summer. The lighting inside the cave is a bit dated, but it doesn't detract from the awe-inspiring rock formations. The largest hall can fit several buildings. ⚠️ The cave is slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. Don't wear slippers. Baili Azalea is for viewing flowers in spring. The flowers are gone by August to September, but the scenic area has no admission fee. Treat it like a forest park. Walk along the boardwalks to see alpine meadows and scenes of cattle and sheep grazing, perfect for kids to run around. For accommodation, choose Zhijin County. Hotels are around 100 yuan per night. Trying to do both in one day will be exhausting, so it's recommended to separate them. Beidaihe's beaches are free, but August is still crowded. After school starts in September, the beaches suddenly become empty. Pigeon Nest Park is best for sunrise. Wake up at 5 AM to see the sun jump out of the sea, more stunning than any filter. The ancient city wall of Shanhaiguan costs tens of yuan for admission, but the area outside the city wall is free. Strolling along the base of the city wall in the evening, watching locals walk their dogs and play chess, is more interesting than going inside to face the crowds. 🚄 There's a bus from Qinhuangdao Station to Beidaihe, 2 yuan, and taxis are also inexpensive, about 15 minutes. Stay in a guesthouse in Beidaihe Seaside. During the off-season, it's just over 100 yuan per night, and it's a 5-minute walk to the beach. 07 Qiqihar City | Heilongjiang Zhalong National Nature Reserve, the only goal is the red-crowned cranes. There are red-crowned crane releases at 9 AM and 2 PM daily. Dozens of cranes fly up from the hillside, with wingspans of two meters. That moment alone is worth the price of admission. ⚠️ Release times may vary slightly with the season, so call ahead to confirm and avoid a wasted trip. After watching the release, don't rush off. Walk through the reeds to the crane viewing platform, where you can see wild cranes foraging in the wetlands, which are more spiritual than captive ones. There's a special bus from the city to Zhalong, every half hour, 10 yuan. By late August, Qiqihar evenings are already cool. Enjoy grilled cold noodles with Guo Bao Rou. At an altitude of over 4,000 meters, you'll get winded walking fast, but the scenery is unparalleled. Kekexili has no official admission fee. Drive along National Highway 109, and you can see Tibetan antelopes grazing in the distance by the roadside, but ⚠️ don't get out of the car to chase them; they run much faster than you. The core area of Sanjiangyuan National Park is not open, but the outer area of Qumalai County can be accessed by self-driving. The source of the Yellow River, Gyaringol, is there. The road conditions are poor, suitable for off-road vehicles. 🚄 From Yushu city to Kekexili, a chartered car costs around 600 yuan for a day, and carpooling is cheaper. Stay in Yushu City. Day 13: Golmud – The vast and romantic northwest wilderness Crossing the uninhabited zone of Hoh Xil and climbing over the Kunlun Pass, surprises kept coming. Searching for Tibetan antelopes along the way was both joyful and exhausting. I kept my eyes fixed on the distance, afraid of missing any antelope or scenic view. Hoh Xil is very flat, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and there are still many Tibetan antelopes. I kept shouting excitedly, ignoring altitude sickness, snapping photos like a child. After crossing Kunlun Pass, the scenery changed dramatically. At first, the barren hills seemed desolate, but on closer look, they were indescribably beautiful. Each hill had its own character—brown, yellow, or red—with rich colors. The rain had carved unique patterns into the hills, creating a stunning sight. In short, the scenery of Hoh Xil and Kunlun Pass rivals that of 318, each with its own charm and breathtaking views. At 5:30 PM, we checked into Xinglong Building Hotel. The conditions were good, but surprisingly, there was no air conditioning. According to locals in Golmud, they never use air conditioning—such a different way of life. Dinner was a barbecue feast, very rich and affordable, and the taste was good. After dinner, back at the hotel, my husband accidentally left his phone in the Didi car. Fortunately, we noticed in time. After calling, the driver quickly returned it to us. We are grateful for the driver’s kindness and praise the simple and honest spirit of Golmud. Day 14: Jiuzhi – Clean and healing wilderness From Golmud to Jiuzhi, a total of 790 km, passing the Jingzang Expressway and then the Dema Expressway, the first day of long-distance driving. I only drove 110 km, so our expert driver worked hard. Driving on Jingzang Expressway was smooth and enjoyable, with no speed limits, good roads, and few cars. But the Dema Expressway was worse, with poor road conditions, many corrugated sections, speed limits of 60–80, making driving nerve-wracking. The scenery along the way remained beautiful. A highlight was Donggecuona Lake, surrounded by mountains, with deep blue water. Clouds gently skimmed the lake surface, and seagulls flew over the sparkling water. We kept feeding the seagulls, feeling extremely happy. We also unexpectedly came across a sea of purple flowers, a delightful surprise. At 5:50 PM, we checked into Jiuzhi Nianbaozun Hotel. Upon entering the room, we saw all solid wood furniture. The simple and understated decor was exactly our style, and our fondness for the hotel quickly grew. Dinner was rich and delicious, especially the beef and beef offal hot pot, flavorful and warming, ending a hard but happy day with a tasty meal. Day 15: Lianbaoyuze – The dreamlike stone city Today’s breakfast was very hearty, with delicious beef dumplings and beef noodles. The people of Jiuzhi are so sincere and honest; we like their straightforwardness. After breakfast, we officially said goodbye to our teammates. Traveling together was fate, caring for each other was affection, and overall it was a pleasant trip. After parting ways, we started our solo vacation mode. I really enjoy this alone time. Today’s theme was to explore Lianbaoyuze, a magical stone city. The moment we entered the scenic area, it felt like stepping into another world. Stone mountains of various shapes stood prominently before me, sparking my imagination. Lifeless stones come alive when people give them stories and spirit. In this vast city, I seemed to see an ancient castle from thousands of years ago, reflecting the lives of people back then—joyful or sorrowful, the heroic guards protecting the castle after battles, lovers cherishing each other, or monks rejoicing after a long journey to obtain treasured scriptures. It was a world we can never truly reach, yet a beautiful moment in time. During the visit, we met a friendly monk and were lucky to take a photo with him. I am grateful for his kindness. Even more fortunate was meeting a kind old woman. When our eyes met, joy welled up naturally, and we hugged without thinking. I was moved by her genuine smile and heartfelt Tashi Delek. Lagaer Lake, the sacred lake. This was the place we stayed the longest. The water was clear and transparent, a gentle breeze blowing, and the bright sun shining through the water, creating an indescribable feeling. Walking around the lake, I deeply felt the charm and purity of the sacred lake. Looking at the pure water and the vibrant stone mountains around, my heart opened wide. Life is a journey of cultivation; no need to force it, just go with the flow. Today was the day I felt the most amazed and happiest—amazed by the beauty, the sacred lake, and the indescribable stories of the stone city. I simply love the natural atmosphere and the sacred lake’s water that calms the restless heart, allowing us to settle down and face life’s troubles calmly. We finished exploring the stone city at 5 PM. After leaving the scenic area, we smoothly checked into Lianhuayuan Hotel, a very distinctive resort. Dinner was beef hot pot, which tasted good. After dinner, we strolled the streets of Aba County. The cool breeze blew gently. Although the streets were a bit messy, it didn’t affect the day’s happiness. We even got the barley we wanted and unexpectedly found my favorite barley cakes. It was a perfect day. Day 16: Gergou – Hot springs to relieve fatigue The hotel didn’t provide breakfast, so we casually walked into a street-side Aying snack shop. Beef offal soup, soup dumplings, eggs, soy milk, and the shop’s homemade side dishes, especially the pickled hot peppers, were delicious. The only downside was the soy milk was a bit thin. After breakfast, we visited Gerdeng Temple. The temple was quite large but felt a bit chaotic. However, I have always admired and respected their sincere faith, so no matter their lifestyle, it doesn’t affect my respect for them. Next, we headed to a hidden paradise we found online—Shenzuo Village. After a bumpy ride, we finally arrived. It was nothing like we imagined, just a modern small village built up. Disappointed, we quickly took a few photos and then drove to today’s destination, Gergou. Leaving the village road, we passed G248 and then turned onto G317. Along the way, colorful and vast grasslands, dense forests, and a small river following us added spirit to the scenery. I couldn’t help but admire that Sichuan’s climate and soil are still the most nurturing. At 4 PM, we checked into Xikang·Ya Hot Spring Hotel in Gergou, a nice hotel. Soaking in the hot springs relieved the fatigue from days of travel. Day 17: Dazhou – The call of home The last day of the trip and the day to go home. A little excited, a little thrilled. After being away for so long, I really miss home. The flowers and plants on the balcony, the little toys on the sofa, and the jar of pickles my mom left behind... all seem to be calling me: home, home. We left promptly at 8 AM, heading straight from Gergou onto the highway back to Dazhou, arriving safely at Sauna Dazhou at 4 PM. This self-driving trip to Tibet took us over mountains and valleys to the place we longed for. We saw snow-capped peaks standing silently, clear lakes, and vast plateaus. We met devoted monks, kind old women, and friendly companions. I recall what the Jiazhuo Living Buddha said: everything is the best arrangement. All encounters and farewells, storms and clear skies on life’s journey are destined. Don’t argue about compassion or wisdom. Sadness is instinctive, but happiness is a skill to cultivate. No need to cling to the past or worry about the future. Calm your mind to appreciate the scenery before you and cherish the present moment—that is the best way to live.
