2026 Mae Wang Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in July)

For this Chiang Mai trip, I recommend renting a car because it makes it easy to explore the city, Mon Jam, Mae Wang, and Doi Inthanon. Day 1, we picked up the car at the airport and started with coffee and carrot cake at Carrot Coffee Cake. The cake was so good and the cafe had a good-vibe feel. Then we had Khao Soi Lung Prakit before Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai’s most important temples, known for its golden chedi, sacred atmosphere, and city view. If you visit during cherry blossom season, continue to Khun Chang Khian for dreamy pink flowers. At night, we went to Lang Mor Night Market for food, including famous Chang Phueak suki, then stayed in the city. Day 2, we drove to Mon Jam. In the morning, we had pizza at Amataros, an Italian-style place with an outdoor zone, then stopped at North Gate Spirit Coffee. Lunch was at Pong Yaeng Ang Doi. In winter, many farms open strawberry fields where you can pick strawberries yourself. We stayed at Baan La Ong Fah 2 in Mon Jam. The road is steep, but the view is worth it. We checked in early, bought food, and ate in our room with the mountain view. Day 3, Hotel offer nice breakfast , we had breakfast with Sunrise view from our room. Then drove down for coffee at Sukhum Mae Rim, then visited Wat Luang Khun Win, a peaceful Lanna-style wooden temple in the mountains. You need to park at the community point and take a local car up because the road is steep, but the temple is beautiful. Then we had lunch at Baan Maew Suan Maew Mae Wang. The owner was lovely and there were more than 50 cats! We fed them, had lunch, and enjoyed the atmosphere. We continued to Kamoo Doi Inthanon, a new whole-house stay with two bedrooms, nature views, and helpful owners. Day 4, we woke up before sunrise to hike Kew Mae Pan. It was cold at first, then warmer as we walked. The trail takes around 2–3 hours, with mountain views and thousand-year roses. After that, we returned to the city, stopped at Blue Coffee at Agriculture CMU, bought Charin Pie’s popular coconut pie. Then visited Joogarood Cafe, a Japanese-style fox cafe with foxes, cats, and raccoons. You can feed them and also hold a fox under staff supervision. This was really impressive experience. A beautiful 700-year-old temple in the heart of the forest ⛰️Deep inside the forest on a high mountain, far from civilization where the road is difficult, narrow, and steep, and electricity hasn't even reached, lies a very old and incredibly beautiful temple: "Wat Luang Khun Win" in Mae Wang District, Chiang Mai. Surrounded by lush natural forests, it is shady and serene. You can admire the exquisite wooden artistry and a magnificent Naga staircase, featuring the graceful curves typical of Lanna style. It is truly good for the soul and full of amazing energy. 🚗If you are driving a private car and aren't familiar with the route, it is highly recommended to take a songthaew (local passenger truck). There are round-trip charter services available for 800 baht. (If you have other travelers with you, you can split the cost, but since I went alone, I had to pay the full amount.) 🙏🏻Before heading up, you'll see little hill tribe children selling flowers to pay respect to the Buddha for 20 baht. You can buy them right here, because there are no shops or facilities up at the top. If you ever have the chance to visit Chiang Mai, don't forget to visit this temple!

Who thought one of the places to find cherry blossom is at the highest mountain in Thailand? Normally cherry blossom viewing is organised by a tour group but instead of joining them I chose to rent a car instead to save cost. The journey took almost 3 hours ride from our hotel in Chiang Mai and we arrived quite early but there is literally nobody waiting at the entrance so we paid 0 entrance fee bcs the cherry blossom season has ended so lucky us? 😅 We arrived at the end of January early Feb but I can say peak bloom is definitely in the mid of January. The flower is still there but it is wilting. 🐑 Mon Kae Inthanon 📌 Stop by to feed approximately 50 sheep. 🛁 They are bathed every Thursday (the white sheep are fluffy and clean). 🤣 But there’s one black sheep that stands out! 💵 Entrance fee: 100 THB per person (You can use 20 THB as a discount for drinks.) The atmosphere is wonderful 🌿, with cool and pleasant weather typical of the Inthanon area. It’s not hot at all. On the day I visited, there weren’t many people, so you can stroll around and take photos at your leisure. The highlight is getting up close with the sheep, feeding them, and taking photos. It feels a bit like being abroad, with beautiful mountain views and lush greenery. A small warning ✌️: You’ll need to walk up a fairly steep hill. #AprilGoodDestinations2025 This time we went to Kerchor Elephant Park in the suburbs of Chiang Mai. Buy a half-day trip. It takes about 1 hour from the ancient city to the destination. I was a little scared at first, but they are actually very friendly. The elephant handlers will also guide you to interact with the elephants. You can touch the elephants and baby elephants, but you can't feed the baby elephants. Please be careful. The staff are very friendly and will help take photos. The next step is to walk with the elephants in the forest and observe their daily life. There are big trees in the woods to provide shade and it won't be too hot. It feels very comfortable to be close to nature. Finally, we rinsed the elephants and took a bath with them. The elephant handlers will also check the elephants' condition and will not force them into the water.
