And there’s a catch: When booking sites say “Manila,” they may actually mean Makati, Taguig, Pasay, Parañaque, Quezon City, Pasig — or the City of Manila itself. These are very different places. Both were close to the tourist places I wanted to visit, so I initially focused on the hotels themselves: price, room, reviews and facilities. I expected the hotel that was closer to the sights to be the more convenient choice. Instead, I spent a little more time checking the actual neighborhoods on the map and eventually chose Makati. Once I started exploring Manila, I was surprised by how different the areas felt compared with what I saw on a map. When I explored Ermita, I realized that being close to tourist attractions didn’t automatically mean I’d enjoy walking around the neighborhood, especially later in the evening. Makati felt like an easier base for me, with restaurants, shops and transport options nearby. That experience changed how I book accommodation. Now I check the streets around the hotel, nearby transport, places to eat and what the area feels like in the evening before I even compare the rooms. My easy-travel rule now is simple: choose the neighborhood first, then choose the hotel. A hotel that looks slightly less convenient on the map can actually make the whole trip easier if you feel comfortable getting around from there.

I'M Hotel 7862 Makati Ave, Makati, 1210 Metro Manila, Philippines I stayed here for one night. Security at the hotel entrance is solid, and a deposit is required even for a single-night stay. The room features a separate bathtub, shower, and toilet, making it very comfortable since you don't have to deal with the typical Philippine issue of shower water flooding the bathroom floor. The view from the room is absolutely stunning. There are bars on the top floor and by the pool, both of which have a great, stylish vibe. The breakfast spread was extensive and excellent. If I had to point out a flaw, it would be that the elevator buttons are hard to see—it's difficult to tell if they're lit up or not. The area around the hotel is relatively safe, so you can relax and feel secure. It's also just a 5-minute walk to the famous Filling Station Bar.
