About 6 km from Sanya Bay, 15 mins drive. 🔟 West Island: Original ecological island, artistic fishing village experience, quieter and cheaper than Wuzhizhou Island. About 20 km from Sanya Bay, 30 mins drive. [Itinerary (tested to avoid backtracking)] Classic 3–4 days route: Day 1 (Arrival + city relaxation): Sanya Bay sunset (Coconut Dream Corridor) > Dadonghai shopping & eating > Luhuitou night view. Day 2 (Island day): Wuzhizhou Island for a day (water sports are super fun) > Return to Dadonghai/Yalong Bay for seafood in the evening. The secret? Stay on a local island instead of a private resort. 🏝️ Local islands have guesthouses and smaller hotels that are much more affordable, plus local restaurants where you can eat for a fraction of resort prices. And the best part is that you don’t need to give up the experiences that make the Maldives so special. 🐠 Snorkelling & diving: The marine life is incredible, and many local islands offer affordable excursions to reefs, sandbanks and dive sites. 🐋 Whale sharks & manta rays: Depending on where and when you go, you can join excursions to look for some of the Maldives’ most impressive marine life. If I had to choose just one local island in the Maldives, Dhigurah would be my pick. It has everything I was looking for: a beautiful long stretch of white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, a relaxed local atmosphere and some incredible marine life just offshore. Dhigurah is particularly famous for whale shark encounters, and this was one of the biggest reasons I wanted to visit. 🐋 You can join local boat trips to look for them in their natural habitat, as well as go snorkelling and diving around the South Ari Atoll. But the island itself is just as special. Unlike the tiny resort islands, Dhigurah is surprisingly long, so there are plenty of quiet spots to enjoy the beach without feeling surrounded by people. But there was no entertainment; all excursions were in the ocean. Fishing, snorkeling, diving (with a permit only), SUPs, surfing, and trips to neighboring islands. This is a Muslim country, so it's worth packing a longer wardrobe. And remember that alcohol is prohibited on the local islands, and you can't bring it into the country. Depending on the island and season, you can snorkel directly from the resort or join boat trips to reefs where you might encounter colourful fish, turtles, rays and, in some locations, sharks. But Here’s the Catch 🫢 The Maldives isn’t necessarily the destination for travellers who want to explore constantly. A resort island can be tiny. After a couple of days, you may realise that you have walked around the entire island. And getting there can be part of the cost. Depending on where your resort is located, you may need a seaplane or domestic flight followed by a speedboat. That $300-a-night room can suddenly become considerably more expensive once you add transfers, meals and activities. Resort vs Local Island This is probably the biggest question to ask before booking. If you want luxury, privacy and that classic “Maldives postcard” experience, a resort island is hard to beat. But if your priority is experiencing Maldivian life, meeting locals and travelling on a smaller budget, staying on a local island can be much more interesting.
