Train Travel Autumn Tour in Italy Day 8 Mantua
Today we left 1️⃣ Parma. Parma train station still has a beautiful hall overlooking the building and small square behind it. It was raining when we left in the morning. After boarding 2️⃣ the train, the rain cleared up after a while. The train ticket from Parma to Mantua cost 6.75 euros, which is the cheapest fare. The train that came was a two-car diesel train covered in graffiti running on a fully electrified section, and at Suzzara we changed to a regular electric train heading to Mantua. The whole journey took about two hours. 3️⃣ Mantua train station was still under construction in front of the station as usual. One year is considered a relatively short time for Italian construction teams, although this is my third time visiting Mantua within this year. 4️⃣ Every time I come to Mantua, the weather is always this kind of blue sky and white clouds, making the scenery especially charming. 5️⃣ The cathedral looks particularly solemn under the afternoon sunlight. 6️⃣ Sodero Square in front of the cathedral had few tourists, but there was a large crowd gathered at the entrance of the Italian Immigration Office next to the square. I wonder if today is some kind of big celebration day 😂 7️⃣ In Mantua, I have seen many places including the Te Palace, Palazzo d'Arco, the Ducal Palace also known as Palazzo Giorgio, the cathedral, Sant'Andrea Church, and many other churches. Basically, I have visited all the attractions accessible with the Lombardy Park annual pass. Since the weather is so nice today, I just wandered outside. First, I went to Virgil Square Park in front of the Diocesan Museum, which faces Lake Mingio. It is shaded with green trees and covered with grass, and importantly, no one was there. 8️⃣-1️⃣0️⃣ I walked along the lakeside path. 1️⃣1️⃣ Then I returned to the Ducal Palace complex, which includes the Church of Santa Barbara, but it is currently closed, so I could only admire the exterior. 1️⃣2️⃣ Castle Square is also open to the public for free. It is a rectangular square with the castle behind it and an arched corridor. 1️⃣3️⃣ Part of the Ducal Palace complex has been under renovation for over a year. 1️⃣4️⃣-1️⃣6️⃣ On my previous visit to Mantua, I toured the castle and the ceiling fresco room of the Mantegna Wedding, focusing on the interior frescoes and barely looking outside. Today, I carefully observed the castle from the outside. I found it to be a rather serious military building, surrounded by a moat with towering walls, giving an imposing and inviolable impression. Upon closer inspection, this castle looks almost identical to the castle of the same name in Ferrara, and as the introduction says, they were indeed designed by the same architect. It looks even more magnificent and solemn under the evening lights. 1️⃣7️⃣ After dinner, I took a walk and first came to the Virgil Museum not far from the castle. Next to it is the Palazzo della Ragione, which had a notice on the door saying it is currently closed and to visit the Virgil Museum next door instead. 1️⃣7️⃣ Then I walked to the so-called fish market designed by Giulio Romano. He was a student of Raphael. This building is said to be his only architectural work left in Mantua. This is where Venetian fishermen, after harvesting seafood, would sail north along the Po River into Mantua and land here to sell their catch under this arcade.
