1. Mado Starry Sea
Starry Sea consists of hundreds of plateau lakes of various sizes, scattered like stars across boundless meadows. On sunny days, the lake surface reflects the blue sky and clouds, like a sky full of stars fallen to earth. Mornings often have light mist over the lake, with flocks of water birds resting and feeding. The entire area is free to enter, with parking available along the road. The terrain is flat and easy to walk, making it the first relaxed checkpoint after arriving on the plateau.
2. Zhaling Lake and Eling Lake
These two are iconic sister lakes at the source of the Yellow River and the largest freshwater lakes in the upper reaches. Zhaling Lake has a wide surface with pale white water; Eling Lake’s water is clear and deep blue, pure and pristine. The lakeside grasslands are lush, blooming with wildflowers in summer. With luck, you may spot Tibetan antelope or wild yaks. Simple wooden boardwalks allow close access to the water to quietly listen to the tranquility of the Yellow River’s source.
3. Yellow River Source Scenic Area (Niutoubei)
Niutoubei sits atop a mountain at 4,610 meters elevation and is a landmark of the Yellow River’s source. The stone monument is grand and imposing. From the summit, you can overlook the full view of Zhaling and Eling Lakes, surrounded by endless mountains with extremely broad views. This is a must-visit site to witness the origin of the Mother River, full of commemorative significance. Please slow your pace and beware of altitude sickness.
4. Laga Monastery and Chalang Monastery
Both are century-old Gelugpa sect monasteries built by the mountains and rivers, with red walls and golden roofs standing out on the grasslands. The temples are peaceful and quiet, with long prayer corridors and continuous pilgrims. Visitors can explore the main halls, admire exquisite murals and thangkas, listen to Buddhist chants, and experience the pure Tibetan religious atmosphere. The surrounding forests and mountains are serene and scenic, perfect for peaceful walks.
5. Gesar Lion-Dragon Palace
Built relying on the mountain terrain, this palace is an important relic of Gesar culture. Inside are murals, weapons, ritual implements, and exhibits related to King Gesar’s epic. Guides tell legendary stories of Gesar’s battles in the snowy lands. For those interested in Tibetan history and folk epics, this is an unmissable cultural site.
6. Amne Machin Snow Mountain
One of the four sacred mountains of Tibet, its main peak is covered year-round by thick glaciers, majestic and pure. The core scenic area is inaccessible, but several free viewing platforms on the outskirts are reachable by car. 🍲【Must-Try Foods】
All meals on this route are concentrated in Mado County, focusing on authentic Tibetan cuisine. Hand-pulled lamb stewed in clear water is original and tender, quickly replenishing energy lost on the plateau; handmade yak yogurt is thick and rich with strong acidity, sweetened with sugar for a refreshing taste. Traditional staple tsampa mixed with butter and curds is fragrant and can be made by hand. Tibetan noodles, beef soup, and butter tea warm the stomach and fend off cold, suitable for the chilly plateau mornings and evenings.
Due to scarce plateau supplies and limited restaurant options, it is recommended to bring chocolate, beef jerky, nuts, and energy drinks for timely energy replenishment.
