Rated by National Geographic as one of the must-visit places in a lifetime June 5-9 is not the best season for Gannan, but we still set off on our journey, turning all the places we longed for into paths we have walked. Here is the itinerary: Day 1: Lanzhou Airport - Meiren Grassland - Hezuo Accommodation on 6/5: Vienna International Hotel Xiangbala Plaza Branch Day 2: Hezuo - Rock Road - Zhagana Accommodation on 6/6: Zhagana Yunshang Ejie Homestay Day 3: Zhagana (Fairy Beach hiking) - Langmu Temple - (via National Highway 345) Maqu County Accommodation on 6/7: Maqu Xueyu Jin Zhu Hotel (We made a mistake in the travel plan here; we should have stayed in Xiaqu, so the next day’s trip to Labrang Monastery wouldn’t be so long and would save a lot of time. We stayed in Maqu, so the next day’s visit to Bingling Temple was too late. It’s possible to just view it from outside, but it’s a pity.) The weather in early June is still a bit cold, be sure to bring a windbreaker or a thin down jacket. The temperature difference is large, so use the onion layering method and carry layers all year round. 2. Pay attention to sun protection; the ultraviolet rays on the plateau are very strong. 3. It is recommended to hire a car with a driver in Gannan. The road conditions are special, and it is safer to find a local driver. We rented a five-day Buick seven-seater for 5600 RMB. 4. The distances between attractions are quite long, so be mentally prepared. Rock Road is very exhausting with poor road conditions. It is not recommended to take this route in early June; the scenery is not as beautiful as imagined. 5. The heating in Gannan is already turned off in June. When booking hotels, ask if there is air conditioning. The hotel we stayed at in Maqu had no air conditioning, only electric blankets. 6. If you are afraid of altitude sickness, it is recommended to buy an oxygen pillow or get oxygen refills at local hospitals. This has a higher oxygen content and is convenient to use in the car during the trip. 7. Temple taboos: ask for permission before photographing monks, and turn prayer wheels clockwise. Standing at the bottom of the canyon and looking up, you see sheer cliffs on both sides, with the Lazi River roaring and surging at your feet. The canyon entrance is so narrow that it barely accommodates a single road. The "natural barrier" I read about countless times in books is now right before my eyes. The mountains and rivers remain, and as the wind blows through the canyon, I feel an indescribable sense of awe. 🎫 Tickets and on-site reality The entire scenic area is open to the public for free. You don't need to buy a ticket, and you can enter the memorial hall by registering with your ID card. The memorial hall is open from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM and does not close at noon. The monument and the canyon boardwalk outside are open all day. To fully explore the memorial hall, the monument, and the ancient battlefield in the canyon at a leisurely pace, 2–2.5 hours is plenty; you don't need to set aside a whole day. If you visit during holidays, parking near the monument is tight. Try to arrive early, or park in a slightly more distant lot and walk over. Do not park on the narrow road. 🚗 Driving experience It is located in Lazikou Town, Diebu, Gannan. Take Provincial Highway S210. It takes about 1 hour to drive from Diebu County. The road conditions are decent, but there are many curves in the mountains. Be sure to slow down when turning, and watch out for falling rocks on the roadside during the rainy season. Public transportation is not very convenient, so it is better to drive yourself. You can also hire a car from Diebu County. You can connect your itinerary: After seeing Lazikou, stop by the former residence of Chairman Mao in Cirina on your way to Zhagana. This way, you can see both the revolutionary history and the mountain scenery in one go without backtracking. 🗺 Two tour sequences, choose based on your time Standard comfortable route (most tourists) First, visit the Lazikou Battle Memorial Hall to understand the historical background, then drive a few minutes to the canyon ruins. You can head back after that. The pace is relaxed, and it is suitable for seniors. In-depth loop route (if you have plenty of time) Memorial Hall → Monument → Yixiantian (A Thread of Sky) Canyon Boardwalk. Afterward, drive to the former residence in Cirina, then head to the E'jie Conference site. Complete the full set of revolutionary sites in Diebu before heading into Zhagana for the mountain views. ✅ Spots worth stopping to appreciate 1. Lazikou Battle Monument The monument is 9.16 meters high, corresponding to the date the battle began on September 16, 1935. The name of the monument was inscribed by General Yang Chengwu and stands quietly between the two mountains. Standing before the monument for a moment of silence and looking at the steep mountains all around, you can truly appreciate how difficult this battle was. 2. Memorial Hall Exhibition Hall The hall preserves many artifacts, telegrams, and battle sand tables from that time, providing a complete account of the pre-battle situation and the combat process. If possible, try to listen in on a guided tour, as it is easy to miss many details when just reading the text yourself. Please remain quiet and respectful while visiting; do not talk loudly or run around. 3. Lazikou Natural Barrier Canyon (Yixiantian) ⭐ Core highlight This is the part that moved me the most. The cliffs on both sides rise straight up, and the narrowest part of the canyon is only 20–30 meters wide, with the Lazi River flowing rapidly. Back then, only a small wooden bridge allowed passage, and the enemy built bunkers at the cliff entrance to hold their ground. As you walk along the wooden boardwalk, you can still see bullet marks on the rock walls from that time. Standing here, it is easy to imagine the perilous scene of soldiers charging up against the natural barrier. The boardwalk is not long, but the surface can be damp in some places, so walk slowly and do not approach the undeveloped cliff edges. 🍜 Food and drink experience There is only a very small convenience store at the entrance of the scenic area with few options for drinks and snacks, and the prices are on the high side. It is recommended to bring a couple of bottles of water with you. Don't settle for food at the entrance of the scenic area. Drive back to Lazikou Town, where there are more restaurant choices, including Sichuan cuisine and Tibetan food. You can try yak meat and Tibetan steamed buns; the portions are generous. If you don't plan to rush back to Diebu County, there are hotels and homestays in the town with adequate facilities, so you don't have to drive long distances on mountain roads at night. ⚠️ Practical tips to avoid pitfalls 1. The altitude here is nearly 2,900 meters. Although you won't experience severe altitude sickness, avoid running or jumping and slow down your movements. The temperature difference between day and night is significant. Even in midsummer, the wind in the canyon is very cool, so be sure to bring a light jacket. Don't forget sun protection and a hat. 2. The stone paths on the canyon boardwalk can be slippery when wet, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes. Do not wear flip-flops. In some places, there is nothing but the river valley beyond the railing. Do not lean over to take photos; safety first. 3. The roads in the ruins area along the provincial highway are narrow. Do not park randomly on curves to take photos, as this easily causes congestion and poses safety hazards. 4. Do not trust the so-called "wild" scenic paths on the side of the road. Many are private land, and it is easy to get lost. Sticking to the official boardwalks is enough. 5. Distinguish the place names clearly: This is Lazikou, Diebu, Gansu. Do not confuse it with the First Bend of the Yellow River in Tangke, Sichuan, or the First Bend of the Yellow River in Maqu, Gansu. Check the name carefully on your navigation. 💡 Personal thoughts Coming to Lazikou is not just about checking it off a list. Only when you see this narrow and perilous canyon with your own eyes do you understand the courage our predecessors had to break through this almost impossible natural barrier.
