Maribor Castle – History Hidden in Plain Sight 🏰
#hellonewyear
📍 Where
Right in the heart of Maribor, just a few steps from the Main Square. Easy to miss if you are not looking for it – the castle blends into the city rather than dominating it.
👀 Why it’s interesting
Built in the 15th century as a defensive fortress against Ottoman raids, Maribor Castle looks modest from the outside. Inside, it is a different story – elegant halls, a grand Baroque staircase, and richly decorated rooms that now host the Maribor Regional Museum. It’s more about everyday aristocratic life than battles and legends.
🎟 Tickets
Entrance to the museum usually costs around 5–7 EUR for adults, with discounts for students and combined tickets for multiple exhibitions.
🚶 How to visit
You don’t need much time – about 45–60 minutes is enough. Even if you skip the museum, the courtyard and facade are worth a short stop while walking through the old town.
🗺 Combine it with
Maribor Castle fits perfectly into a relaxed city walk:
– Main Square (Glavni trg)
– Lent district and the Old Vine House
– A walk along the Drava River
All of this can be done in one afternoon without rushing.
💡 Tip
This is not a “wow” castle at first glance. It works best if you like calm places, local history, and museums that are never overcrowded. A good contrast to Maribor’s wine bars and riverside walks.

A stunning and lesser-known European ancient city crowned as a legend!
Who knew! In Slovenia, I discovered a seriously underrated treasure city—Maribor!✨
This is Slovenia's second-largest city, once part of the Habsburg Empire, and it even won the title of "European Capital of Culture" in 2012, with history vibes fully on display~
📸 Must-visit: Maribor Castle!
Built by Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich III between 1478-1483, the main structure you see today dates back to the 16th century, and even the Baroque-style stairs are original from the 18th century! Every snap looks like a vintage masterpiece. I recommend wearing a light-colored long dress and a straw bag for maximum atmosphere!
🚇 Transportation Tips:
It's about a 2.5-hour direct train ride from the capital Ljubljana, super convenient! The castle is on the hilltop of the old town, just a 10-minute walk away~
🎫 Tickets & Opening Hours:
Adult tickets are around 5 euros, with discounts for students! Morning visits are best—fewer people, better lighting, and no queues for photos!
💡 Hidden Gem:
Behind the castle, there’s a small viewing platform where you can overlook the entire Drava River and the old town’s red rooftops. The sunset here is truly breathtaking😭
⚠️ Avoid the Pitfalls:
Don’t go on weekend afternoons! Locals flock to the market, making the castle area extremely crowded—weekdays are the real golden hours for photos!
Quickly add Maribor to your Eastern Europe itinerary! It’s off the beaten path and perfect for photos, making your social media debut right on the spot🔥

Maribor, Slovenia, is such a hidden gem! 🍇 The city has a relaxed vibe, with beautiful architecture, charming squares, and the famous Old Vine House, home to the world’s oldest grapevine. 🍷 Entry to the vine museum was around 5 EUR, and the wine tasting was totally worth it! I also took a stroll along the Drava River and visited the stunning Maribor Castle. 🏰 In winter, the nearby Pohorje mountains are perfect for skiing. Maribor is a perfect mix of history, nature, and great wine! #Maribor #Slovenia #WineLovers #HiddenGem #OldVine #Travel

Kyrgyzstan's Majestic Beauty Unveiled: A Road Trip to Remember
The true beauty of Kyrgyzstan can only be appreciated on a road trip. The Tien Shan mountain ranges, high-altitude passes, and Martian-like landscapes at 4000 meters above sea level are awe-inspiring. However, I'd never dare to take the wheel myself. Those who've witnessed my parking skills know that a desert is required for a U-turn.
That's why I highly recommend embarking on this journey with a reliable tour operator. I was thoroughly impressed with @visitkarakol, and I can't stop recommending them. #VisitKarakol #Kyrgyzstan

Maribor an old wine town
If you ever travel to Slovenia, Maribor is a place to visit. A small, old town, surrounded by vineyards. The houses are low, no skyscrapers, just nature all around. Buy veggies at small markets, straight from the farmers or sit outside in the center of the city, enjoying good food or a nice drink. And of course go to the vineyards and try some wine. Accomodations should be easy to find, it's a small town. #wine #oldtown #nature
