Daily Itinerary + Attraction Guide
Day 1 Beijing → Chengdu → Tianquan | Altitude approx. 800m
✈️ Fly from Beijing to Chengdu, rent a car directly at the airport, take the Yakang Expressway to Tianquan, stay at Tianquan Yijiacheng Hotel (highly recommended, convenient parking, clean rooms).
Tips: Rent an SUV, prepare metal anti-skid chains (some sections of winter 318 have black ice), Chengdu to Tianquan takes about 2.5 hours, all highway, no rush.
Day 2 Tianquan → Kangding → Muya Monastery | Stay in Kangding (approx. 2560m)
Check in at Tianquan Service Area (318 popular photo spot, just take photos, no need to linger)
Luding Bridge (walk on the bridge with kids to feel history, free entry, convenient parking)
Kangding Love Song Square / Liuliu City (stroll Tibetan-style street, eat Tibetan or simple meals) → Zheduo Mountain Snow Viewing Platform (get off to take snow photos, summit is low, 20 minutes to reach, windy at high altitude) → Muya Monastery (located on Yajiang Road near the river, perfect spot to see golden sunlit peaks, best at dusk).
Tips: Zheduo Mountain is prone to snow in winter, open 8am-5pm, anti-skid chains required, keep speed under 40 km/h.
Day 3 Kangding → Litang → Batang | Stay in Batang (approx. 2580m, low altitude preferred)
Golden Sunlit Mountain Viewing Platform (early morning snow mountain photos, sunrise around 7am in winter, arrive early to secure spot) → 18 Bends of the Sky Road / Kazila Mountain Pass (get off for photos only, pass altitude over 4000m, don’t let kids run or jump) → Changqing Village Ke’er Monastery (light hike on trail at monastery entrance to East Hill summit, panoramic view of Litang, gentle trail suitable for kids) → Renkang Ancient Street (stroll Tibetan-style ancient street, take photos of Tibetan architecture, quiet and uncrowded) → Sisters Lake (can go down to lake shore, close-up snow mountain lake photos, lake surface frozen and beautiful in winter).
Avoid: The Batang Buchong Tibetan Hot Spring Homestay we stayed at was a disappointment—poor hygiene and noisy, not recommended.
Day 4 Batang → Mangkam Rumei Town | Stay in Rumei Town (approx. 2650m)
Kangning Monastery (Tibetan Buddhist temple, free entry, keep quiet with kids) → Jinsha River Bridge (check in at Sichuan-Tibet boundary marker, take commemorative photos, officially enter Tibet) → Weise Lin Monastery (small temple, quick visit to feel Tibetan faith, few people, no queues) → Lawu Mountain Viewing Platform (after descending, monkeys by roadside, can park and feed with biscuits or nuts), stay at City Convenience Hotel Mangkam Rumei Branch (highly recommended, good soundproofing, convenient parking).
Tips: Don’t tease monkeys to avoid scratches, don’t linger at Jinsha River Bridge, pass quickly.
Day 5 Rumei Town → Basu | Stay in Basu (approx. 3280m)
Cross Dongda Mountain Pass and Yela Mountain, check in at Nujiang 72 Bends (take panoramic photos from viewing platform, many bends, don’t drive off-route) → Nujiang Bridge (park and view from afar, pay tribute to heroes, no honking).
Tips: Nujiang 72 Bends has black ice in winter, no overtaking, drive slowly, get off at viewing platform for photos only.
Day 6 Basu → Ranwu → Gawalong | Stay in Bomi (approx. 3900m, short stop)
Ranwu Lake Free Viewing Platform (free parking in winter, frozen lake with snow mountains, great photos, flat lakeside walk suitable for kids) → Xiudeng Monastery (2 km rough trail to mountain top, few people, quiet)
Xingkong West Middle Bridge (first go to viewing platform for panorama, then down to water for close-ups, shoot in morning to avoid backlight) → Daxing Village Iron Bridge (afternoon backlight, better to shoot in morning)
Gawalong Scenic Area (close contact with snow, kids can play in snow, some gravel road, drive SUV slowly).
Tips: Multiple parking areas around Ranwu Lake, each with different views, stop anytime for photos.
Day 7 Ranwu → Lulang → Suosong Village | Stay in Daxing Village (approx. 3000m)
Check in at millennium-old tree, Tibetan King Cave, 4000 km mark of 318, Tongmai Grand Bridge (all parking areas, just take commemorative photos) → Lulang Town (quiet in winter, shops closed, just stroll and take photos) → Lulang Forest Sea Viewing Platform (free, distant view of Namjagbarwa Peak, excellent sight) → Sejila Mountain Pass (multiple parking spots, photo Namjagbarwa Peak)
Suosong Village (best time for golden sunlit peaks is 6-7pm, great peak views from village, starry night sky, moonlit silver mountains are stunning).
Tips: Many accommodations in Suosong Village with average views. I chose Daxing Village about 20 minutes drive inside, better snow mountain views. Nights are cold, bring thick jackets for kids.
Day 8 Suosong Village → Nyingchi | Stay in Nyingchi (approx. 3000m)
❌ Avoid: Xiaojuziying underground river road is very bad, all dirt road, don’t go → Gongzun Demu Hotel (excellent location, riverside beach, facing Namjagbarwa Peak, free pavilion on hotel road with great peak views) → Fozhang Sand Dunes (shoot desert and river together, a rare sight) → Niyang River Viewing Platform (view riverside scenery, clear water in winter, great reflections).
Tips: Choose sunny days to see Namjagbarwa Peak, pavilion views better than some paid spots, free and no pitfalls.
Day 9 Nyingchi → Lhasa | Stay in Lhasa (approx. 3650m, altitude adapted)
Take Linla Expressway to Lhasa, visit Potala Palace (book tickets in advance, recommend guide Mr. Tan at entrance, a veteran with detailed explanations, kids can understand, contact guide via private message) → Jokhang Temple (also booked Mr. Tan, explains Tibetan history, educational for kids).
Tips: Potala Palace has many stairs, walk slowly with kids, no running or jumping. The accessible areas are fewer than years ago, cherish the visit!
Day 10 In-depth Lhasa Tour
Tibet Museum (free, learn Tibetan culture with kids, interactive exhibits) → Sera Monastery (watch debates, experience Tibetan Buddhism culture, debates around 3pm) → Potala Palace Travel Photoshoot (Tibetan costume experience, kids look adorable in Tibetan clothes, choose studios near scenic spots, cost-effective).
Tips: Tibet Museum requires advance booking, keep quiet during Sera Monastery debates.
Day 11 Lhasa → Beijing
Jokhang Temple (get blessed amulets, stroll Barkhor Street) → Zaki Monastery (Tibetan God of Wealth temple, get blessed amulets, pray with kids, buy barley wine and khata scarves at entrance), fly to Chengdu then transfer to Beijing in afternoon.
Tips: Follow local customs for amulet blessings at Zaki Monastery, simple and solemn ceremony.
Family Self-Drive Essentials
1. Vehicle: Choose SUV throughout, prepare metal anti-skid chains and tire pressure monitor. Winter 318 sections Tianquan, Zheduo Mountain, Nujiang 72 Bends have black ice, chains are a must. Da Zhuangge’s experience: if no snow, sedans can manage 318; if snow, 4WD still needs chains. Don’t worry, chains are sold where needed, though prices may be higher.
2. Altitude Sickness Prevention: Stay at low altitude each night, limit stops at passes, eat light and carb-rich food, give kids sweet tea/butter tea, carry portable oxygen (use only if needed). Butter tea works well, Da Zhuangge usually drinks cola as water.
3. Clothing: Big temperature difference in winter on Sichuan-Tibet route. Dress kids in shell jacket + thermal underwear + down jacket, bring waterproof gloves, hats, scarves to keep hands warm while playing in snow.
4. Food: Avoid overly spicy or greasy food, find local home-style restaurants, kids prefer familiar tastes. Always have warm water and snacks ready.
5. Road Conditions: Some winter sections (Gawalong, Xiaojuziying camp) have poor roads, avoid if not SUV. Follow police instructions at controlled sections, travel off-peak.
This winter 318 family self-drive trip, using low-altitude gradual adaptation, avoided altitude sickness troubles and revealed a different plateau scenery: golden sunlit peaks, starry skies, snow mountains and lakes—each view full of surprises. The journey combined relaxed check-ins and small pitfalls to avoid, making the family trip more meaningful. 318 is not just for adults; take your kids slowly and let them feel the beauty of nature—that’s the best reward of travel.
