Lesotho, a country that is not well-known, is shaped like a hole within South Africa on the map. It is a typical African nation, a kingdom on the highlands, with its capital Maseru situated at an altitude of over 1400 meters. Because of the high mountains everywhere, the clouds in the sky are quite distinctive, often unpredictable and spectacular. From the hilltop near the Avani Lesotho Hotel & Casino, one can overlook the cityscape of Maseru (Figure 8 and Figure 9). Wearing blankets is a tradition for both Lesotho men and women; men drape blankets over one shoulder, while women wear them over both shoulders. When winter approaches, tight skirts and blankets appear at the same time (Figure 11), and the indoor chill can make one's hands and feet cold, but once outside under the sunlight, the intense rays feel scorching, as if it is still summer. Besides their unique clothing, Lesotho has another 'specialty,' which is their straw hats, also known as 'Basotho straw hats.' Not only is the straw hat pattern featured on the national flag, but even restaurant buildings are conspicuously adorned with it (Figure 1). The national flower is the Queen Aloe (Figure 10), which is said to determine gender based on the direction of leaf rotation. Maseru doesn't have much in the way of entertainment or landmark buildings, and after dark, everything seems even more bland. Frequent robbery incidents prevent people from venturing out to explore. The nice scenery in the city is probably limited to a few hotels. Figures 2 to 7 were taken at the Black Swan Guesthouse and Lancer's Inn in Maseru, Lesotho. The hotels' architectural style is characterized by thatched roofs, complemented by green lawns and colorful flowers, offering a rough but fresh and natural ambiance. The last four images are of the Maseru Regional Hospital, which is set to open in June and was built with Chinese aid. Undoubtedly, it will be a beautiful sight on Kingsway. It is one of the outcomes of China's establishment of 30 China-Africa counterpart hospital cooperation mechanisms and will become one of the largest and most modern comprehensive hospitals in Lesotho upon its inauguration.

I came from Sani Pass: 4WD from Underberg to the border (1,800 ZAR shared), then a 2-day 4×4 run via Mokhotlong to the park gate — a sedan will not make the Mokhotlong road in wet season. Gate fee ~50 ZAR / 50 Maloti equivalent, cash only, no card, no change for a 200 ZAR note — the ranger told me flatly. I stayed in the basic rondavel (300 ZAR/night, bedding not provided, bring a sleeping bag rated to -5°C). At 07:00 in March the Sehlabathebe dam was a mirror, the cliff fen above it springy peat with moss campion, and my boots sank 5 cm if I stepped off the tussocks. The 3 hr walk to Tsoelikane viewpoint crosses the fen — step on tussocks, never on the bare peat, or you punch through to black water. Temperature swung 18°C day to -4°C night; I wore a down jacket at the 07:00 dam mirror and peeled to a tee by 11:00. The rock arches beyond the fen are the quiet reward — no signage, no crowd, just wind and a sentinel rock thrush. Mistake: I drove in with no Maloti and the ranger wouldn't break a 200 ZAR note for a 50 Maloti fee — carry small Maloti or exact ZAR. Another: November–March the Mokhotlong road is axle-deep mud; April–May and Sept–Oct are the windows. Absolutely breathtaking — a little piece of heaven in Fouriesburg ❄️🏔️ There are places that are beautiful, and then there are places that completely take your breath away. Fouriesburg and the views across towards the Lesotho/Maloti mountains are truly something special. Waking up to those enormous mountains stretching across the horizon, covered in a blanket of snow, feels almost unreal. The landscape is peaceful, wild and completely untouched — rolling valleys, dramatic sandstone cliffs and those magnificent mountain peaks disappearing into the distance. In winter, when the snow settles across the mountains, the scenery becomes something out of a fairytale. There is something incredibly calming about standing there and simply taking it all in. No crowds, no noise — just crisp mountain air, endless views and some of the most spectacular scenery South Africa has to offer. Fouriesburg has a beauty that stays with you long after you leave. Next morning: Basotho pony trek to Maletsunyane Falls (186 m single drop, second highest in Africa). Lodge sets rates: day outride LSL 500–600; overnight pony trek with packhorse and village rondavel LSL 1,570–2,230/day pp incl. guide. I did the 4-hour return ride to the falls viewpoint plus 1 h descent on foot to the gorge lip. Ponies are small, sure-footed, and indifferent to your fear — the trail crosses the Matsoa River twice, knee-deep in Nov. Bring: layers (plateau wind 0 °C at dawn in June), rain shell, compact daypack (they load your overnight stuff on packhorse, 12.5 kg limit). No cards in the village; bring loti or rand cash. The lodge sells Maloti wool hats — skip, overpriced. Mistake: a Dutch cyclist tried to walk the route in trail runners — 22 km round trip, 1,400 m loss/gain, he turned back at the river and paid a pony anyway. Another: tipping the guide 50 rand when the village expects 100+ — awkward. Opinion: the pony trek costs more than a guided walk but supports 6 herder families per ride. Is animal-powered tourism ethical if the animals are bred for it and the alternative is destitution? I lean yes here, but I'd love pushback.
