Hawksbill Turtles Conservation Efforts
The Turtle Conservation and Information Centre in Padang Kemunting, located in Alor Gajah, Melaka, Malaysia, is a remarkable place for those interested in marine life, particularly sea turtles.
The center focuses on the Hawksbill Turtle which is renowned as one of the most beautiful turtle species globally. These turtles get their name from their unique, eagle-like mouth. The hatchery at the center can accommodate 300 to 600 turtle egg nests during each spawning season. Each nest is approximately 45 cm deep, and the eggs typically take around 60 days to hatch. Once the baby sea turtles hatch, they are released into the sea. Interestingly, when they mature, these turtles often return to the beach where they were born. The beaches at Padang Kemunting have recorded the highest landings of Hawksbill Turtles in the state of Melaka.
The Turtle Information Centre offers a Turtle Gallery, a hatchery, and a head-starting pond. Visitors can learn about turtle conservation efforts and witness these incredible creatures up close. The center is open on specific days, including Tuesday to Sunday, with varying hours. If you’re in the area, consider paying a visit and supporting their vital work.
