🏖️ Why is there sand here? A "pocket beach" in the rocky shore ⏳ An experiment in coastal current deposition.
#January Destinations 2026
Tsuchida Coast is a typical "pocket beach."
Flanked by rugged rocky headlands (including the andesite of Tangyin), a fine sandy beach has formed in the middle.
This is a physical result of "longshore currents" and "wave refraction."
As the waves enter the bay, their speed slows, and suspended matter they carry undergoes "sedimentation."
The water quality here is rated "AA," meaning extremely high transparency. Although the sides are rugged rocks, the sand underfoot has been sifted by hydrodynamics, resulting in uniformly sized particles. Walking barefoot on it, one can contemplate how this beach was "captured" and preserved in the turbulent Sea of Japan.
🌟 Insider Tips:
1. Rock-Sand Boundary: Photograph the boundary between the beach and the black rocks on either side; this is the visual dividing line of the difference in geological hardness.
2. Sunset Reflection: As the tide recedes, the damp sand becomes a mirror, reflecting the red glow of the setting sun—a superb canvas for optical reflection.
💡 Transportation Recommendations:
• Rail/Walking: Get off at Kamate Station on the JR San'in Main Line and walk for approximately 15 minutes. This is a solitary walk along the coastline.

☣️ 2 million "poisonous organisms"! A "monospecific community" covering the coastline 🌱 A chemical war for survival
#JanuaryDestinations2026
Tangyin Narcissus Park boasts 2 million Japanese narcissus plants.
Don't mistake them for ornamental plants; they are a biologically dominant species.
The entire narcissus plant contains alkaloid toxins such as lycorine.
This means that pests and wild animals dare not eat them.
It is this "chemical defense" that allows them to form an absolute "monoculture" on this barren plateau with strong sea winds. Watching the dense green stems and leaves covered with white spots on the entire slope is a violent display of "biomass." They don't need human care; they have conquered this land with their toxins and resilience.
📝 Key Observation Points:
1. Plant Density: Observe the extremely small spacing between the plants; this is a physical structure designed to support each other in strong winds.
2. Dwarfing Phenomenon: The daffodils here are shorter and sturdier than those on flat land, an aerodynamic adaptation to withstand sea winds.
💰 Cost:
• Viewing: Free (Maintenance and management cooperation fee approximately NT$44 / 200 yen).

🌊 Why is it called "Tang Sound"? Listen to the "low-frequency resonance" under your feet 🔊 The physical sound generation of sea caves
#JanuaryDestinations2026
This place is called "Karakane" not because there were people from the Tang Dynasty, but because of the "sound."
Below this coastline are numerous enormous sea caves.
When the giant waves of the Sea of Japan crash into these caves, the air is compressed and released instantly, producing a deep, resonant hum, like a "Chinese Bell."
This is a natural Helmholtz Resonance. Standing on the cliff edge, close your eyes and feel the subtle vibrations beneath your feet. It's not an earthquake; it's the ocean tolling a bell. This auditory experience has a more physically "penetrating" power than the visual scenery.
📸 Photography Tips:
1. Auditory Imagery: Photograph the white foam created by the waves crashing against the cave entrances—a visual representation of the sound.
2. Desolation: Photograph the gray sky and black rocky shore on a cloudy day to emphasize the heavy sonic atmosphere.
📍 Attraction Information:
• Admission: Completely free.

🐍 This isn't a living organism, it's magma! A 300-meter-long andesite vein plunges into the Sea of Japan 🌋 A physical masterpiece of differential erosion
Content: On the coast of Tangyin, a giant "black serpent" has emerged from the land and burrowed into the Sea of Japan.
This isn't a myth; it's a violent scene of geology.
The body of this "serpent" is andesite.
Millions of years ago, molten magma forced its way into fissures in the earth's strata and cooled.
Over time, the surrounding softer sandstone and mudstone were eroded away by the waves, leaving only this extremely hard "dike." This is the result of differential erosion. About 1 meter wide and over 300 meters long, it lies exposed on the coast, displaying an "unyielding hardness." The joints formed as the rock cooled are clearly visible, like the scales of a snake.
Walk directly on the back of this "snake" (be careful of the waves) until you reach the rocky reef at the shore.
It feels like stepping on the "blood vessels of the earth." Cool lava flows beneath your feet, and the raging Sea of Japan surges to either side. This is the perfect outdoor classroom to showcase the differences in "rock strength."
📸 Photography Tips:
1. Snake Head Perspective: Walk to the very front of the rock formation and turn around to photograph how this black rock cuts through the coastline like a spine.
2. Long Exposure: Use a neutral density filter and a slow shutter speed to blur the waves, highlighting the immovable, black texture of this "snake."
📍 Attraction Information:
• Location: Kamatate area, Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture (within Tangon Narcissus Park).
• Admission: Completely free.
• Note: The rocks are slippery; this will test your shoe's traction. Please wear non-slip shoes.

Cycle tour from Fukuoka to Osaka via coastal
Cycling from Fukuoka to Osaka along the northern coast of the Chūgoku region is an unforgettable adventure that blends the beauty of Japan’s seaside with the thrill of the open road. This roughly 700-kilometer journey winds through quiet fishing villages, scenic cliffs, and historic towns, offering a uniquely immersive experience far from the typical tourist trail.
Starting in Fukuoka, you’re met with vibrant city energy and great local eats — a perfect send-off. As you head east, the coastal breeze accompanies you along the Sea of Japan, with routes often flanked by pine forests, rice paddies, and dramatic ocean views. The ride is peaceful, with long stretches of road where it's just you, your bike, and the sound of waves.
One of the best parts of this ride is the changing scenery. You pass through small towns like Hagi, with its preserved samurai district, and Matsue, a charming castle town by a lake. In between, you’ll find cozy ryokan, hot springs tucked into hillsides, and quiet beaches perfect for a midday break. The slower pace lets you soak in local culture — from chatting with shopkeepers to catching a small festival or market along the way.
While there are many climbs, especially through Shimane and Tottori’s more rugged areas, the effort is rewarded with thrilling descents and sweeping views. You’ll share roads with minimal traffic for most of the ride, and there’s a sense of freedom that comes from being so connected to the land.
As you roll into the Osaka area, the contrast hits — from rural solitude to buzzing urban life. It’s a satisfying, almost surreal shift that caps the journey perfectly.
For any cyclist who loves a good mix of nature, culture, and a bit of challenge, this route is pure joy — a coastal odyssey across Japan's lesser-seen heart.

Roof tiles and photogenic spots
Sekishu tiles are the pride of Shimane Prefecture!!!
Shimane Arts and Culture Center Grand Toit, a complex of art museum and art theater that opened in 2005
An important place that is the cultural hub not only of Masuda City but also of the Iwami region!!
“Grand Toit” means “grand = large” and “toit = roof” in French.
Sekishu tiles cover the reinforced concrete building with a brilliant glow.
If you are traveling to Shimane Prefecture, be sure to go and see these Sekishu tiles!!! On a sunny day, we recommend taking photos with the sparkling tiles in the background!!! ✨️✨️It will be a photogenic spot!

Udon restaurant in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture
If you are traveling to Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture, you should definitely try this udon restaurant.
[Udon no Man'ei]
The restaurant has a Showa-era atmosphere. This udon restaurant has been in business for over 40 years and has been passed down from the previous owner.
The broth is slightly sweet, and the rich flavor from the fat from the meat is irresistibly delicious. The noodles are chewy and addictive.
The restaurant fills up at lunchtime even on weekdays. So, we recommend avoiding the 12 o'clock hour and going a little earlier or after 1pm!

● Exquisite cuisine and a charming atmosphere: "Tagosaku" in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture
I love traveling so much that I got certified as a domestic travel agent. I recommend "Tagosaku" in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture!
I really wanted to go to "Tagosaku", also known as "Japan's best izakaya" (reservations required, of course it was full). After passing through the darkness of a residential area, a light was lit up and it had a great atmosphere.
We were shown to a private room. The basic course is left to the chef, and when we asked the staff, they told us that even the most reasonable course was quite filling, so we ordered that for the number of people plus rice balls for the children.
The menu seems to change depending on the day, but look at how transparent this squid is. The crunchy texture is also wonderful and very delicious. My family was also very impressed. By the way, the rice balls ordered by the children were made of shiny freshly cooked rice and stuffed with what seemed to be freshly shaved bonito flakes, and they said it was the most delicious rice balls they had ever had in their lives.
This is the best izakaya, with a particular attention to detail in the simmered dishes, fried rosy seabass that you can eat from the head, and sashimi.
It's a nostalgic atmosphere and a great place for those who love alcohol.
