The observation deck on the main keep (main castle) offered a particularly striking panoramic view. The distant plains of Iyo Bay and the city of Matsuyama were visible, and the castle itself was bathed in a vibrant display of light and shadow, changing with the seasons. I sat on a bench for a while, leisurely admiring the castle, imagining the warriors of the past who once guarded it. On the way down, I walked through the gardens surrounding the castle, strolling along the stone walls and among the ancient trees, and taking photos. Dogo Onsen has a history of 3,000 years. There are actually many shrines worth visiting nearby, such as Yu Jinja Shrine. This shrine is regarded as the energy field of Dogo Onsen. It is solemn and simple. I don’t know why, but it reminds me of the Yubaba’s oil house in Spirited Away. This Yu Jinja Shrine is said to have been built by the order of the 12th Emperor Keikyu, and is dedicated to Okuninushi and Sukunahikona. It is said that when Sukunahikona was injured, Okuninushi used the water of Dogo Onsen. It cured him. Because of the legend, Yu Jinja Shrine has become a power spot of Dogo Onsen. It is said that after the Hoei earthquake in 1707, Kansai and Shikoku suffered serious disasters. The Dogo Onsen, which had existed for thousands of years, suddenly stopped flowing. The locals were extremely anxious. After devout sacrifices and prayers, it miraculously flowed again. In March every year, a grand Yu Festival is held. They were so kind 🥹💕 • A tsukemen shop located in Okaido! I ate the most famous tripe tsukemen. It was a little greasy, but it was delicious. : つけめん 蔵木 • I went up to Matsuyama Castle using a coupon. The lift looked fun, so I rode it, but it was a little scary because there was no safety equipment ㅠ!! I didn't go inside the castle, but went up to the very top to take in the view of Matsuyama ~ If you come here in spring, the cherry blossoms will be in full bloom and it will be really pretty • This is Shimonada Station, famous as a 'station close to the sea'! There were a lot of Japanese people as well as Koreans. It's really pretty when you go around sunset time. 🥹 However, since the train only comes once an hour, you should check the schedule carefully! I went back on the broadcasting station car. Thinking about it now, I think I wasn't scared at all. • I personally like looking around marts, so I went to Fuji Grand and did some mart shopping. As this is the terminus of the Botchan train that rattles through Matsuyama city, you can see it change direction at the back of the disembarkation area. The retro station building is a restoration of the old station building built in 1911, and has a beautiful western-style Meiji era exterior, which is lit up at night. Another option for accommodation in Shikoku's Dogo Onsen, away from the crowded hot spring street, we chose Okudogo in the back mountain of Dogo. This hot spring resort hotel, 'Okudogo Ichiyu no Mori,' has been in operation since the Showa era. Although it has a bit of an old-fashioned feel, it is very well-maintained, elegant, and high-class, with a noble retro atmosphere. The Japanese hot spring ambiance is perfectly created, especially since it is located in the natural mountain forest, far from the bustling crowds, making the entire environment superb. The 28-square-meter guest rooms offer a choice of twin beds or Japanese-style futons. The decor leans towards a classic Japanese old-school style, and the view from the window is full of greenery, making it very relaxing. A traditional Japanese hot spring hotel experience includes enjoying breakfast and dinner. The original price for a stay with two meals is about 8,000 New Taiwan Dollars, but we were lucky to book it for 5,000 NT, averaging less than 2,500 NT per person, which is quite a bargain. Various open-air hot springs are a major selling point, and there is also a large outdoor swimming pool. Overall, it won't be as crowded as Dogo Onsen, where you have to jostle with others to take a bath. Highly recommended.

Visiting Dogo Onsen in Shikoku, which is said to be the inspiration for the bathhouse in Spirited Away, we stayed at the unique English-style hot spring hotel, Old England Dogo Yamanote Hotel. The overall decor and furniture are very British, exuding an elegant English charm. The hotel is located on a hillside in the Dogo Onsen town, offering a quiet retreat amidst the bustling area. Walking down the slope, you'll reach the lively hot spring street and the famous Dogo Onsen. There are also free foot baths along the way, which are quite nice. The room types at Old England are simple, with double rooms available in 18 square meters and 33 square meters. The decor features simple vintage patterned wallpaper. To be honest, the public spaces are more beautiful, but the rooms are still comfortable. Prices range from 3000 to 5000 New Taiwan Dollars, with an additional 500 NT for breakfast. The breakfast at the hot spring hotel is sumptuous, enjoyed in a European-style restaurant with a buffet. It's a rare leisurely experience. The hotel's large bath and sauna are also quite good, with the hot spring water being very smooth. Dogo Onsen truly lives up to its reputation.

From Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama City, if you walk left along the road, you will come across a historical site that was once the residence of the Kono clan during the Heian period, known as Yuzuki Castle. The remaining ruins have now been transformed into a park, the lush green Dogo Park. The moat still exists, forming a river that surrounds the park. When visiting during cherry blossom season, the beautiful blossoms reflect on the moat, creating a stunning scene. Climbing up to the observation deck on the castle ruins offers a wide view, allowing you to see Matsuyama Castle, Matsuyama City, and the cherry blossoms covering the mountains. Not far from Dogo Park is Dogo Station, a retro wooden building that exudes an ancient charm, making you feel as if you have traveled back to the Heian period, ready to take a tram to the hot springs.

If you take Jeju Air, there is a free shuttle bus, so if you use the free shuttle bus, you can save a lot on transportation costs. Check in, have a quick lunch, and use the Matsuyama lift ticket in the coupon book, so you can take the lift up comfortably and see Matsuyama Castle, and if you go up to Matsuyama Castle, you need to buy a separate entrance ticket, so make sure to use the coupon book.
