Michigan travel guide and discussion

I visited 360 Chicago for the panoramic views, but it was the lake that stole my heart 😍🌊 From this height, Lake Michigan looks just like the ocean: the water stretches across the entire horizon, while downtown is nestled between the lake, the river, and endless streets 🤯 Located on the 94th floor of Michigan Avenue, the observation deck makes familiar landmarks look tiny: the bridges, Riverwalk, neighborhoods, beaches, and highways 🏙️✨ It’s so cool to spot places you’ve already explored from up here. The best time to visit is just before sunset 🌅 You get the daylight, watch the lake change colors as the buildings catch the warm glow, and then see the whole city light up ✨ Pro tip: adjust your angle for photos to avoid reflections 📸 But honestly, the panorama is breathtaking from every side 💫 They have an attraction called TILT—a glass platform that tilts out over the city 😅 But the best views are definitely the windows overlooking Lake Michigan 💙 It was right here that a moment I’ll cherish forever happened—my partner proposed to me 💍🤍 It was absolutely magical against the backdrop of the endless lake and city lights ✨ After walking the Riverwalk and wandering among skyscrapers, seeing Chicago from above really puts its massive scale into perspective 🤍 📍 360 Chicago, 875 N Michigan Ave, 94th floor Check out my profile for more Chicago posts 🤍

Michigan’s Charm in a Day: Scenic Routes & Sweet Treats 🌳🍦 Kick off your Michigan adventure with lakeside panoramas, vibrant small towns, and a little sweet indulgence! Whether you love outdoor scenery or cozy stops, this trip is packed with postcard moments. 🗺️ Ideal Route: Start out with a drive along M-22, soaking up views of the sparkling lakes, rolling hills, and nature-rich stops. Make your way to picturesque towns like Traverse City and the quaint streets of Grand Haven or Saugatuck—these gems are perfect for photo ops and relaxing strolls. 🏞️ Must-Visit Attractions: · Sleepy Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Hike the dunes or catch the sunset over Lake Michigan for that ultimate “insta-worthy” shot. · Glen Lake Overlook: Snap panoramic views that stretch for miles—bring your camera! · Main Street ice cream break: Stop at Charlie’s Round the Corner Ice Cream shop (open daytime, check local hours!) for a lakeside treat. Their vintage storefront, set against sunny skies and Western-style architecture, makes a great backdrop. 🧳 Pre-Trip Prep: Pack water, sunscreen, layered clothing (Michigan weather can be unpredictable!), and a camera for those scenic shots. Comfortable walking shoes are a must. 💡 Top Things to Try: Sample cherry treats in Traverse City, paddle on calm rivers, and don’t miss flower-filled corners for close-up nature photography. My tip: Visit mid-morning for quieter streets and easier parking. If you’re strolling downtown, follow the riverside paths for hidden views and small-town charm. Key Precautions: Watch for sudden weather changes—even sunny days can turn cool by the lake! Check opening times for shops and attractions before heading out. #Michigan #RoadTrip #NatureLovers #IceCreamStops #TravelTips

Watching the University of Michigan football game was absolutely amazing! The entire stadium was bathed in yellow, and the victory, achieved amidst the roar of 110,000 fans, gave me goosebumps. We just returned from Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana feeling relaxed and happy after another wonderful week at the resort. This was our third visit to the property, having stayed on both the Ziva and Zilara sides in the past. The property is stunning and meticulously clean. For this trip, we had a club-level swim-out room and decided to upgrade to oceanfront at check-in for a reasonable additional fee. The view was absolutely worth it! We made the most of all the pools at Ziva and Zilara, which were consistently clean and well-equipped with towels, bars, attentive staff, and plenty of lounge chairs. The food was consistently good across the dining options we tried. Our favorite spots included El Mercado buffet, Noodle and Thread, and Waves. We didn’t opt for the Blind Butcher experience, as we never have, but we loved the convenience of 24/7 room service for food, drinks, and even Gatorade. The staff at Hyatt Zilara and Ziva are truly exceptional. A special thank you to: · Jorge, our favorite manager at El Mercado, and Amado, the Activities Supervisor. Their outstanding service and attention to detail have made our trips amazing for three years in a row. · Reynaldo, a supervisor at the Spiritz pool bar, provided excellent service, and bartenders Wander, Juan, and Jhonny kept our drinks flowing perfectly. · Manuel from the Activities team was great fun to play blackjack with by the pool—he doesn’t let guests win just for the sake of it! · Chef JJ and Javier at El Mercado helped make a fantastic birthday dinner on our third night, with JJ’s food being a standout highlight. · Isabel, the Club Level Director, ensured our stay was truly memorable. · Our housekeeper, who remained with us the entire week, was incredible—sweet and attentive. She even ran after us with a forgotten shirt after we had checked out! Thank you, Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana staff, for another unforgettable experience. We look forward to seeing you all next year at the same time and place! ~Amber & Matt, Detroit, Michigan USA

America has Detroit and Chicago. But in the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan's two peninsulas lies an island that time forgot on purpose. Mackinac Island is a small settlement of Victorian cottages, horse-drawn carriages, and a Grand Hotel with the longest porch in the world. There are no cars here. The only sounds are hoofbeats, bicycle bells, and the lap of waves. Here is how to explore this hidden American gem and save money with Trip.com. 1. Main Street at Dawn: Victorian Charm and Silence Mackinac Island's Main Street is lined with Victorian storefronts, fudge shops, and wooden docks. By 10 AM, the ferries arrive with day-trippers. Come at 6 AM instead. The light is soft. The Victorian facades glow. You will walk along Main Street with only the sound of horses and the distant cry of gulls. It feels like stepping into a 19th-century summer resort. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Mackinac Island. It shows you the quietest routes through town and the hidden viewpoints. The best photos are from the harbor at sunrise, when the Victorian buildings reflect in the water. 2. The Grand Hotel: A Victorian Masterpiece The Grand Hotel is one of the most famous hotels in America, with the world's longest porch at 660 feet. The hotel is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture. The interiors are elegant. The views are stunning. Even if you do not stay, the porch is open to visitors for a fee. Come early. The hotel is quiet, and the light is soft. Money Hack: Buy your Grand Hotel porch pass on Trip.com before you go. The pass is required to walk on the porch, and booking online saves time. The fee goes toward the hotel's preservation. 3. The Carriage Roads: A Journey Through the Island Mackinac Island has no cars, and the best way to explore is by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle. The carriage roads wind through the forest, past Arch Rock and other natural wonders. The pace is slow. The scenery is beautiful. Come in the morning. The light is soft, and the roads are quiet. Budget Advice: Skip the expensive carriage tours. Rent a bicycle and explore on your own. The island is small, and the roads are easy. Check Trip.com for a "Mackinac Island Bike Guide" that shows you the best routes and the quietest times to ride. 4. Food That Tastes Like the Island Mackinac Island is famous for its fudge, made fresh in the shops along Main Street. Try Fudge — chocolate, peanut butter, or turtle. Order Whitefish — the local catch, grilled or smoked. And do not miss Pecan Balls — a sweet treat from the island's bakeries. Where to Eat: Skip the expensive restaurants on the waterfront. Walk into the side streets and find Café Mackinac or Restoran Island, where locals eat. The food is fresh, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a free piece of fudge when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse on the island. Look for something near Main Street or the harbor. You will sleep in a Victorian room with a four-poster bed, a view of the water, and the sound of horses at dawn. The evenings are quiet, and the stars are bright. Conclusion: Mackinac Island is not a place you rush through. It is a place you breathe in. It is an island of Victorian charm and horse-drawn carriages, of fudge and water. It is a place where the past is preserved on purpose. America is a country of many stories, and Mackinac Island is its timeless soul. Come and walk Main Street at dawn. The island is waiting. #trip_com #USA #MackinacIsland #mackinacislandtravel #USAHiddenGems #Michigan #CarFreeIsland #BudgetTravel #AmericasGuide #travelusa #GrandHotel #VictorianCharm #HiddenUSA #Fudge #GreatLakes

America has Chicago and Detroit. But on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan lies a town that celebrates its Dutch roots every spring. Holland is a small settlement of windmills, tulip fields, and brick streets that feel like a slice of the Netherlands. The history is proud. The pace is calm. Here is how to explore this hidden American gem and save money with Trip.com. 1. Windmill Island at Dawn: Tulips and Silence Windmill Island Gardens is home to a authentic Dutch windmill brought from the Netherlands in 1965. By 10 AM, the tour buses arrive. Come at 6 AM instead. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Holland. It shows you the quietest routes through the gardens and the hidden viewpoints. The best photos are from the windmill at sunrise, when the tulips glow. 2. The Tulip Time Festival: A Sea of Color Every May, Holland hosts the Tulip Time Festival, when millions of tulips bloom across the town. The festival includes parades, Dutch dancing, and traditional food. The atmosphere is joyful. The colors are stunning. Come in the morning. The light is soft, and the crowds are thin. Money Hack: Many festival events are free. Skip the expensive grandstand tickets. Watch the parades from the side streets and enjoy the tulips in the public gardens. Check Trip.com for a "Tulip Time Guide" that shows you the best free events and the quietest viewing spots. 3. The village is family-friendly and fun. The details are charming. Come early. The village is quiet, and the light is soft. Budget Advice: Dutch Village has an entrance fee. Buy a combined ticket on Trip.com that includes the village and Windmill Island. You save about 20%. The ticket is valid for the whole day. 4. Food That Tastes Like the Netherlands Dutch-American food is hearty and comforting. Try Oliebollen — Dutch doughnuts filled with apples and raisins. Order Poffertjes — tiny pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar. And do not miss Stroopwafel — a caramel-filled waffle cookie, best enjoyed warm. Where to Eat: Skip the expensive restaurants on the main street. Walk into the side streets and find Café Holland or Restoran Dutch, where locals eat. The food is authentic, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a free pastry when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the town. Heading to Michigan for a wedding and time with family.

My USA tour was truly wonderful and enjoyable; the amount of fun I had in just 11 days was incredible. I purchased my tickets through Trip.com, and I am a regular customer of theirs. Within this short period, I managed to visit Michigan, Niagara Falls, and Toronto. The entire experience was delightful and fun. I returned safely to the UK and faced no issues whatsoever in the USA. Thank you, Trip.com.

Last-minute work trip to Michigan with a whole row to myself.

Travel day! Off to Michigan for work seminars.

Taylor, Michigan Loved the bridges.

We visited Royalton Chic from July 31 to August 7. This was our second time at the resort, with our first trip being in April 2025. Unfortunately, there was a significant amount of seaweed during this time of year. While the staff worked hard to clear it early every morning, which we appreciated, it still felt like a losing battle. The workers on the beach, however, were fantastic. We opted for the diamond club again, but chose a swim-out room this time, specifically room 3105. We loved the swim-out experience. The pool was monitored every morning at around 7 a.m. for salt and chlorine levels, and a staff member ensured the water was debris-free each day. The air conditioning worked exceptionally well—so much so that it started leaking through the ceiling. Despite our butler’s efforts to have it repaired twice, the issue persisted until our last day, by which point we weren’t overly concerned. Even with the leakage, our room remained cool throughout our stay. During our first visit in 2025, Ronald was our butler, and he did a phenomenal job. We reached out to him in June prior to our return, and he informed us via WhatsApp that he’d be off when we arrived but would arrange for his partner, G, to assist us. Ronald assured us that G would provide excellent service, and he wasn’t wrong. G was every bit as exceptional as Ronald. Both Ronald and G even stopped by during our stay to say hello and take photos with us. They genuinely care about the guests, and the resort would greatly benefit from promoting them to management roles in the future. Regarding the food, it wasn’t as good as we remembered from our previous visit, aside from breakfast and the steakhouse. Nonetheless, we didn’t go hungry. We attended a sales presentation this time, as we had done in April 2025. Back then, the presentation lasted an hour, and we received $200 toward an excursion to Saona Island, which was amazing. This time, however, the experience was disappointing. The American staff member hosting the presentation made an ignorant comment about Canada taking in Michigan as a province and generally wasn’t pleasant to deal with. To make matters worse, she didn’t give us any promised gift for our time. The concierge, Carlos, said he’d investigate the issue, but we never heard back. We recommend avoiding the sales presentation—it’s no longer worth the time. On a positive note, Ruth at the diamond club bar was outstanding, as she always is. She remembered me from April 2025, and one evening, she had my two tequilas waiting with a friendly smile before I even asked. Her attentiveness and warm demeanor added a special touch to our stay. In conclusion, Ronald, G, and Ruth truly exemplify exceptional service and are invaluable assets to Royalton Chic. They have a remarkable ability to make guests feel welcome and valued, and the management would be wise to involve them in leadership roles to enhance the resort experience further. Lastly, I want to highlight the hard work of the entire staff at Royalton Chic. They go above and beyond, and it’s important to show them the respect they deserve through kindness, gratitude, and tipping. If you can't afford to tip, you might want to reconsider visiting. Thank you again to Ronald, G, and Ruth for their incredible service. They easily earn a 5-star rating. As for the resort, I give it 4 stars overall, as it’s beginning to show its age.

We’re road-tripping Michigan this summer—hugging the lakeshore, then crossing the U.P.—and trying to keep stops short but memorable. Think stretch-the-legs walks, a quick overlook, a great treat, maybe a fast swim. What’s one stop you’d actually drive 30 minutes off route for, and exactly what you do there in under an hour? Bonus points if parking is easy and it’s not a total madhouse in July.

#easytravelpost Upper Tahquamenon Falls throws 50,000 gallons a second of tannin-stained water—"root beer falls"—and the 0.5-mi boardwalk loop from the upper parking lot is moss on steroids: sphagnum, fern, and cedar draped in green on every rail side. I drove in from Paradise, MI (M-123, 30 min from Whitefish Point), paid the Michigan Recreation Passport at the gate ($12/day non-resident, card ok), and parked at the upper falls lot ($9 day-use if no passport). Lower falls 4 mi downstream, reachable by foot trail (4 mi) or the riverboat shuttle ($12 round trip, cash preferred). The mossy forest isn't the boardwalk—it's the 4-mi foot trail between upper and lower falls on the east bank, where yellow birch and cedar grow on old dune sand and the ground stays wet year-round. I wore trail-runners, regretted it after the first seep crossing; waterproof shoes or accept wet socks. Bugs in early August are war-grade—head net, DEET, permethrin pants. Mistake: I did the lower falls first and paddled the rivermouth island ($6 rowboat rental, cash) at noon—sun glare, no mist rainbow. Wrong order. Do upper falls at 9 a.m. for the rainbow in the spray, lower falls at 4 p.m. for soft light on moss. Second mistake: I bought fudge at the upper falls gift shop ($8/box, grainy). The Tahquamenon Falls Brewery next door does a better blueberry wheat for $7. Camping: Wilderness State Park adjacent? No—stay at the park campground ($25/night, reservable), or the Paradise Motel ($110/night, card). No backcountry permit needed for day trails. Buy: a $4 cedar tea tin from the lower falls stand, actually brewed from park cedar tips. Skip the "authentic yooper" magnet. Opinion: Tahquamenon is framed as a roadside waterfall stop, but the mossy trail between the falls is a proper 2-hour UP walk if you slow down. Should the DNR pave the whole 4 mi to "accessible" standard and kill the moss, or keep it muddy and real? Keep muddy. Would you skip the upper falls crowd for the lower falls moss alone?

#arrivalguide drove M-107 west from Ontonagon at 6:15 am in late September, aiming for the Lake of the Clouds Scenic Overlook before the fall-color crowd. The paved pull-off is only 100 yards from the lot—ADA boardwalk, zero effort—but I wanted Government Peak (1,290 ft), so I parked at the Government Peak Trailhead 1.2 mi east and took the loop north. The trail is 2.4 mi round trip, rolling through second-growth maple and birch, then a short scramble up the wooden stairs to the open summit. From Government Peak you see the same Lake of the Clouds winding below the escarpment, but with the whole Carp River valley laid out—better than the paved overlook because the light hits the water differently at 8 am. Park entry is covered by the Michigan Recreation Passport ($13 annual resident / $39 non-resident, bought at any state park entrance or online with plate registration); the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park itself charges no extra day fee. Cash is rarely needed—card works at the Union Bay campground store, but bring coins for the honor-box firewood. Rules: dogs on leash, no drones, catch-and-release only if you fish Lake of the Clouds via the Big Carp River Trail. My mistake was wearing road shoes; the Government Peak loop gets muddy after rain and the roots are slick. If you do both Government Peak and the Lake of the Clouds boardwalk overlook, budget 3 hours total. Question: is the short paved overlook enough for a first-time “Porkies” visitor, or does skipping Government Peak mean missing the real scale of the escarpment?

???? Another day amazed by the prosperity of an American small town?? Before coming, I only knew Holland was a famous tulip town in Michigan 💐 But wow! This is totally a hidden wealthy village! 🏰 🚗 Original plan: Drive around casually to kill time But the moment I stepped into downtown, my pupils dilated in shock 💥 ✨ Every building here looks like it’s from a fairy tale! ✨ The streets are filled with art installations and flowers ✨ Even the small shops are decorated with exquisite detail! ✨ Every home in the residential area is a big house with a garden Help! This isn’t a small town at all It’s clearly a specially crafted wealthy neighborhood! 👑

When I started writing travel guides 5 years ago, my original intention was to show everyone that travel isn't an unattainable luxury for the rich. As long as you plan well, students and office workers can enjoy it too. But in 2026, budget travel might be looked down upon because travel has become a consumer activity driven by utilitarian motives. Here is what happened: a week ago, I shared a vacation rental in Bora Bora, Tahiti. The host had only been online for a month, seemed like a young, beautiful local, and the price was affordable (around 1,000 RMB). It was waterfront, facing the sacred mountain of Bora Bora, though the interior was quite simple. I just posted a note to share it. I was stunned. The vibe is completely different from a few years ago. Between 2020 and 2023, I loved writing travel guides. Back then, I was a student without much money, and I really enjoyed researching low-budget travel. Back then, there weren't many travel guides on XHS, and I was keen on posting my own. $200 to see the fall foliage in Northern Michigan, $7,000 for half a month in Hawaii, $900 for 7 days in Southern California, $800 for 11 days in Florida—my track record is there to see. The skepticism back then was mostly about how I managed to do it, rather than the status-seeking behavior we see now. Budget travel guides have less and less of an audience. I can feel that travel is becoming a luxury item, just like handbags, cars, and jewelry. Where you go, which hotel you stay at, and how high-end your photos are have become things to compete over. Everyone wants to go to the same trendy hotel or check-in spot. A vacation in Tahiti, the blue hour in Norway, an Antarctic cruise, or chasing animals in Africa have become bragging rights. When a culture of comparison creeps into the field you love most, it's hard not to be consumed by it. From initially being obsessed with budget travel, I started to be influenced after I began working and chose some more upscale hotels. I also have to reflect on whether I've been brainwashed, with everyone saying you should stay somewhere nicer when you travel... I haven't posted budget travel guides for a long time either. The most popular travel guides now are AI-generated copy and images from travel agencies trying to attract customers—they don't even try to hide it. I can't compete with the algorithm. It seems that taking a few "fancy" photos and pairing them with vague, cliché captions like "life is a wilderness" has become the audience's preference. ... Whatever. What's wrong with budget travel? Play smart, not play rich. I admire people with a high travel IQ more than those with "money power." Constantly exploring the fun side of Earth Online!

#kindnessontheroad There is a saying among sailors: "Lake Superior is the largest, coldest, and most dangerous of the Great Lakes." I learned the truth of this during a solo sailing trip out of Grand Marais, Michigan. The lake started relatively calm in the morning, but by mid-afternoon, the infamous "Superior chop" had kicked up. Twenty-knot winds were battering my small 22-foot sloop, and my aging Dacron mainsail suddenly split right down the leech with a sound like a gunshot. I was struggling to furl the torn sail and maintain steerage when a bright orange US Coast Guard Auxiliary patrol boat pulled alongside. Two officers, bundled in heavy Mustang survival suits, came aboard. While one took the helm to keep us headed into the wind, the other—Petty Officer Diaz—got to work. He didn't just tell me to fix it; he pulled out a heavy-duty sail repair kit and spent thirty minutes stitching a temporary patch using a palm-and-needle technique that was far beyond my amateur skills. He reinforced the entire seam, not just the tear. While he worked, he quizzed me on my float plan (which I had filed—always file a float plan!). He explained that the water temperature was barely 50°F (10°C), meaning hypothermia would set in within minutes of falling overboard. Once the sail was patched enough to get me back to the harbor safely, they escorted me in, their presence a calming reassurance against the grey, angry waves. This experience taught me humility. Never underestimate the Great Lakes, even on a sunny day. Always check the marine forecast, invest in quality cold-weather gear, and know that the Coast Guard Auxiliary isn't just there for rescues—they are invaluable educators. Has anyone else had a "close call" on the Great Lakes?

The schedule is carefully arranged to start morning attractions like the Ford Rouge Factory Tour and Greenfield Village at opening times and ensure all major venues are visited before closing. About transportation: Downtown financial, theater, and riverfront areas are easily accessible by walking or light rail, making transportation very efficient. The automotive museum cluster in the Dearborn suburbs and Belle Isle Park on the east side are farther away. Weekend or evening peak ride-hailing may face potential traffic congestion. The itinerary includes an extra 15–20 minutes buffer for long-distance transfers and waiting. About highlight experiences: Advance online reservations are recommended for guided tours at the Ford Rouge Factory Tour and Motown Museum. Comfortable walking shoes are advised for Belle Isle Park and the riverwalk. Due to strong seasonal mosquitoes in the Great Lakes summer forest and waterfront areas, high-concentration insect repellent should be prepared in advance. About sun protection and cooling: Summers are warm with strong afternoon UV rays. The itinerary schedules outdoor heavy-activity sites like the factory and open-air historic town in the cooler morning hours. However, sunscreen with high SPF is still needed for afternoon walks in parks and markets. Frequent hydration is advised to prevent heatstroke and dehydration. Portable rain gear should be carried due to frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
