I arrived in Monbetsu on a tourist bus from Sapporo, a 3.5-hour drive, to board the drift ice sightseeing ship, the Garinko. The earliest ticket I could buy the next day was for 9:00 AM, so I stayed an extra night. I rushed to buy tickets at 8:00 AM, only to be told before boarding that there were no ice floes that day. So I headed to Mombetsu for the icebreaker, but Google Maps didn't find the exact location. You need to search for "Momonbetsu Marine Park, Mombetsu City, Hokkaido, Japan 094-0031" for a more accurate location; you'll see a model icebreaker on land. I arrived in Mombetsu at 11:00 AM, only to be told that all the ferry services were full, and the earliest was the 2:30 PM ferry, but there were no ice floes that day either.
