In late August last year, we spent 4 days driving south along California State Route 1. Starting from San Francisco, passing through Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, Solvang, Santa Barbara, and finally arriving in Los Angeles. We originally thought it would be just an ordinary road trip, but later realized— the true magic of California State Route 1 is how it constantly redefines your imagination of the "coastline." 🌁 Big Sur road closure, but unexpectedly saw a different kind of scenery Because part of Big Sur was closed at the time, we had to detour via Highway 101. We were a bit disappointed at first, but as we drove along, we discovered: Driving along the sea brings coastal romance; driving along the mountains offers a different kind of vastness. Valleys, ranches, golden grassy slopes, rolling mountains in the distance, the view outside the car window felt like a continuous replay of a Western movie. Later, we even felt— this "unplanned" detour became a very special part of the trip. 🌊 To avoid regrets, we drove the southern section again Thinking it over later: we had already come such a long way. Since we didn’t fully drive the northern section, we decided to make up for it by driving the southern section as well. So we started again from San Luis Obispo, driving the southern part of Route 1 from south to north. The result was— we "double drove" Route 1. 😂 But we don’t regret it at all. Because the most charming thing about California State Route 1 is that it never repeats itself. The same road: is different on sunny days and cloudy days; different in the morning and at dusk; the sea looks completely different when driving north or south. Sometimes the sun shines on the cliffside coast✨ sometimes thick fog swallows the mountains and sea🌫️ sometimes you turn a corner and suddenly see the boundless Pacific Ocean. That feeling of "not knowing what you’ll see next" is truly addictive. 🚗 What I love most about Route 1 It’s not a trip where you have to rush to see all the sights. The most comfortable way is: stop when you’re tired of driving. get out when you see a beautiful coast. stay longer if you find a town you like. The scenery along the way isn’t just at the destinations. Often, the most unforgettable moments are: some unnamed stretch of coast, a sunset suddenly shining into the car, and the mountains and sea passing by outside the window just as music plays. #aquarium Super excellent and super beautiful aquarium! All the aquariums I have visited, including the most beautiful aquarium in Okinawa, Hong Kong Ocean Park, and Zhuhai Changlong Ocean Park. There was no marine animal show, but we played all day long! It is closed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The documentaries inside are all made by the aquarium itself, which is only 15 minutes. While watching the movie, the staff will explain the behind-the-scenes story on the spot, which is a hundred times stronger than watching a pure movie.

We have taken guests to Monterey for whale watching, and every trip has spotted whales. Monterey Bay features a massive underwater canyon close to shore, combined with a rich marine food chain, attracting whale activity in different seasons throughout the year. Monterey’s advantage is not that you can only see whales in certain months, but that each season has its own main species. 🐋 What whales can you see in different months? December–April: Mainly migrating gray whales. In spring, you might also see mother whales and calves heading north. Late April–early December: Humpback whales are more active, with chances to see spouting, tail slapping, fin slapping, and feeding. Whale breaches are common, and catching that moment on camera is rare. Summer to early fall: You might encounter the largest animal in the world—the blue whale. Orcas can be spotted year-round, with better chances in spring and some fall periods, but their movements are the hardest to predict. When we say “whale watching year-round,” it means different species appear in different months, not that you’ll see gray whales, humpbacks, blue whales, and orcas all in one trip. 📍 Why include it in Highway 1? San Francisco → Monterey whale watching → 17-Mile Drive → Carmel → Big Sur Monterey is already on the classic Highway 1 route, so you don’t need to make a special detour just for whale watching. Typical trips last about 2.5–4 hours. A more comfortable plan is to go out to sea in the morning, then visit 17-Mile Drive or Carmel in the afternoon, and continue to Big Sur the next day. Watch the whales first, then the screen—whale tails usually appear for only a few seconds. First time visiting Big Sur, how to explore Highway 1 all the way? Let me start by saying I set off from Monterey (San Francisco to Los Angeles, passing through Monterey) — Highway 1 Big Sur section! 📍Route: Monterey → Carmel → Big Sur Drive south along Highway 1 the whole way. The entire route features coastal cliffs, forests, and ocean waves, with almost no chance of getting lost. Recommended stops (north to south) 📍1. Garrapata State Park Overlook You’ll see this shortly after entering Big Sur. The cliffs and coastline here are especially spectacular, with fewer people, making it perfect for great photos. 📍2. Bixby Creek Bridge (famous bridge) The most iconic landmark in Big Sur! Built in 1932, about 85 meters high, it’s one of the most famous concrete arch bridges in the US. Many car commercials, movies, and Apple wallpapers have been shot here. 📍3. Point Sur Lighthouse (view from a distance only) A century-old lighthouse built on volcanic rock, full of history. If you have time, you can book a guided tour in advance. 📍4. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park If you like hiking, you can take the forest trails surrounded by redwoods, which are very refreshing. (I didn’t have time this trip because I was rushing to LA) 📍5. McWay Falls The most beautiful waterfall in Big Sur! About 24 meters high, it flows directly into the Pacific Ocean, one of the few “oceanfront waterfalls” in the US. It’s just a few minutes’ walk to the viewing platform, and the scenery is breathtaking. Continuing south, you can drive all the way to San Simeon, Hearst Castle, and even Morro Bay. If you have enough time, you can easily make it a full-day road trip. ⚠️A few must-know tips ✅ Parking Don’t park randomly on the roadside! Many areas prohibit parking. Scenic spots have designated parking lots. Make sure not to block the road when parking. ✅ Food There are limited restaurants in the area, and they tend to be crowded and pricey. It’s best to buy sandwiches, coffee, water, and snacks in Monterey beforehand and picnic by the sea for a better experience. ✅ Signal Many places have little to no cell signal. Be sure to download offline maps for navigation in advance. ✅ Gas Fill up before entering Big Sur. Gas stations are very few along the way and noticeably more expensive. ✅ Weather There’s often morning fog in summer. It’s best to start after 10 AM when the sky and ocean views are clearer. That’s the most comfortable way to travel. 📍Day 3|San Simeon → Santa Barbara → Los Angeles Start the morning at Hearst Castle, then head south. Driving from South Bay to Big Sur, about 1.5 hours later you’ll pass through Monterey town and head straight to the aquarium highly recommended by many—after visiting, I can say it’s totally worth it! The venue isn’t very large, but the overall layout and aesthetics are really on point. Each exhibit area has a great atmosphere, making it comfortable to explore and perfect for photos. Whether you’re a couple, friends, or a family with kids, it’s highly recommended. ✨ A few of my favorite areas: 🌿 Kelp Forest (photos 2–3) The aquarium’s most iconic exhibit and a must-see spot for many visitors. The huge kelp forest combined with the light-filtered water really gives you the feeling of being underwater. Occasionally, staff provide explanations—check the schedule after entering. 🐟 Open Sea (photo 4) It’s especially stunning when schools of sardines swim together. Every shot looks like a masterpiece. 🦦 Sea otters The otters are incredibly cute! They swim super fast, so you’ll need some patience to catch a front-facing shot! 🪼 Jellyfish (photo 5) One of my favorite areas! Jellyfish of various colors and sizes drift slowly, creating a fully immersive vibe. Photos here are super dreamy. 🌊 Outdoor area (photos 7–8) Don’t miss this! The aquarium’s restaurant is right by the sea, so you can enjoy simple meals while watching the ocean—it’s very relaxing. 🙌 Touch pool experience You can get up close with marine creatures. Many kids spend a long time here. The staff are very friendly and patiently share lots of ocean knowledge. There are many small corners easy to overlook. this west coast trip ended perfectly! Arrive and depart from LA. The itinerary is as follows: Day 1️⃣ Pick up the car at LA airport 🚗 Register as a gold member with Hertz China in advance for a 10% discount. For LA accommodation, it’s recommended to stay a bit farther from downtown. Pasadena and Alhambra are both good choices. Choose a safe neighborhood with a garage to prevent car break-ins. Day 2️⃣ South Palm Drive on Palm Avenue – shopping in Beverly Hills – Santa Monica 🌊 – Sunset Boulevard 7011 Vista Del Mar Ln Day 3️⃣ Hollywood & Griffith Observatory day tour Day 4️⃣ LA to Sequoia National Park 🌲 (4h) – stay in Fresno No signal inside the national park, so remember to download offline maps on Google Maps beforehand. Route: Sequoia Museum – Big Tree Trail (easy walk) – Tunnel Log – General Sherman Tree. I was worried about time, but five hours was enough to visit these famous viewpoints. Stay in Fresno that night. The next day, Yosemite is a short drive away. Day 5️⃣ Fresno to Yosemite ⛰️ – stay in Groveland Yosemite route: Glacier Point – Tunnel View – Bridal Veil Fall – Yosemite Fall – El Capitan. We were especially lucky to see a 🐻 that day. Day 6️⃣ Groveland to San Jose Say goodbye to the mountains and head to Silicon Valley in California. Visited Apple and Google headquarters, and Stanford. Day 7️⃣ Round trip from San Jose to San Francisco 🌁 San Francisco highlights: Lombard Street, Fisherman’s Wharf Pier, classic Golden Gate Bridge viewpoints Day 8️⃣ Officially start Highway 1 🚗 Depart from San Jose, stay in Monterey. Checked out Black Gold McDonald’s, then went to Carmel for food and shopping. Carmel town is very beautiful. Full name: Point Lobos State Natural Reserve Translated as: Point Lobos, California state natural reserve. A coastal hidden gem not to miss on California’s Highway 1. Driving Highway 1 was cloudy all the way, sitting in the car for a long time, for those who love hiking, it’s great to have a long walking route. Stayed in Monterey the night before, drove over for more than half an hour early in the morning. Entered Point Lobos around 10 AM. The entrance showed parking was full, many cars parked along the road outside the entrance. The child didn’t want to walk the outermost trail with us. He first parked near the entrance in the 15-minute temporary parking spot, then after seeing a car leave the park, he drove inside and found a parking spot at the green dot arrow. The red arrow marks our hiking route (see photo 18), we only walked the northern outer trail. Walking and taking photos plus lunch in the car at the parking lot, took three and a half hours. The trail is mostly gentle ups and downs, pretty easy to walk. The only downside was the cloudy weather, which affected the ocean view, the last section was very windy, so bring a windbreaker. The small museum is great, with Lobos history, including stories of indigenous fishing and hunting, Chinese abalone harvesting, and whaling pioneers spanning a century, donated two dollars. The whalers cabin is well preserved, inside are displays of fishermen’s gear, abalone canning tools, old photos, a rare coastal industry historical artifact on the West Coast. In the forest, cypress branches twisted by sea wind, gray lichen covering pine needles, · ike ancient guardians of the Pacific, the wildflower-covered coast is bizarre and winding, the rough rock layers seem to hide strange geological secrets, · ····· everything was well worth it. The difficulty level is very friendly for regular visitors, no special gear needed, a good pair of walking shoes and a windbreaker are enough. It fulfilled my hiking dream on California’s Highway 1. Next time, choose a sunny day and walk the entire outer trail. About 5 hours. If you didn't get to try clam chowder in San Francisco, you can have it here. There are also small boats going out to sea every day. I didn't go to the panoramic aquarium, but it looked pretty good from the photos. 2️⃣Carmel-by-the-Sea Hot and a must-visit, recommended for 1 day. A European-style fairytale town by the sea, where slow living becomes a scenic view. I haven't seen a similar town in all the countries I've visited, combining nature, art, and life. Various European-style houses, and even the houses in the town are very stylish. There are many galleries, art shops, and vintage stores, perfect for a city walk and great for browsing. 3️⃣Cambria - Pismo Beach 🏠Didn't explore the town itself, but the beach is beautiful. 📍Elephant Seal Vista Point (Seal Beach) Many seals lazily lie on the beach, it's fun. 📍Hearst Castle Having already been to Windsor Castle, this one wasn't particularly surprising. 4️⃣Solvang (Danish Village) It's actually quite small; we finished exploring in about 3 hours. The town is basically windmills, cake shops, wooden houses, and alleyways. The souvenir shops are all pretty similar; just browse a few. It's not bad, just nothing special, so don't spend too much time there. However, the owner of shop P12 is a very kind and welcoming elderly lady, and her shop has the most unique items overall—highly recommended! After shopping, you can stop by the bakery next door to try the Napoleon cake. 5️⃣ Santa Barbara Popular, a must-visit, recommended 1 day. The whole town is filled with red-tiled roofs, white walls, clock towers, and palm trees. Take photos at the Old Mission pink church, overlook the town from the Courthouse clock tower, visit the Stearns Wharf landmark pier, watch the sunset at Butterfly Beach, and stroll along State St, the main street. Even a full day here feels too short!

My husband, exhausted from dealing with parking at the motel all night, decided at dawn to leave: “Can we stay two nights at a motel and then one night at a hotel from now on?” Without breakfast, we set off snacking on some treats. The father and son headed straight for Los Angeles on the GPS, and I quickly shouted to stop: “We’re not going to Los Angeles today. We’re driving California’s Highway 1!” So, the familiar family drama played out again—bickering all the way and fighting over the navigation. Then, after a turn, everyone fell silent. We didn’t get on the highway but drove slowly along the coast. When the first view of the Pacific suddenly filled the windshield, the car instantly went quiet. A few seconds later, my husband couldn’t help but say, “Wow, this is unbelievably beautiful!” At that moment, the travel guide finally won. Monterey, more healing than the photos The morning fog was thick in Monterey. The rocks were full of seabirds, ground squirrels darted through the crevices, a white elderly lady walked her dog, the dog chased the squirrels, and my son couldn’t stop laughing. Along the shore grew a plant I later learned is called “ice plant.” The sea breeze was cold but blew away all the anxiety from the trip. It also made me realize something small but true: People who are truly used to traveling abroad don’t go out of their way to chat with locals. Instead, they naturally blend into the environment, respecting each other’s space—that’s the most comfortable way to get along. Which is more beautiful, 17-Mile Drive or Big Sur? We continued south. The 17-Mile Drive is very refined, like a carefully manicured garden; Big Sur is a completely different kind of awe—involving cliffs, deep blue ocean, and a road that hugs the coast, with every turn like a movie scene. But everyone in the group had different opinions. My husband liked Monterey, I loved Big Sur, and a friend’s favorite was the 17-Mile Drive. When I drove Highway 1 a second time, I realized the most beautiful part is never just one spot but the constantly changing scenery along the way. The biggest regret of travel is rushing nonstop We had originally booked a seaside guesthouse in San Simeon, but the platform canceled the booking repeatedly, so we had to switch last minute to Pismo Beach. Along the way, we missed many places we wanted to stop at because we were worried about fuel and rushing to make time. Later, I understood that the greatest charm of Highway 1 isn’t checking off spots but taking it slow. The same stretch of ocean looks completely different depending on the sunlight, weather, and time. So later, I lost interest in those popular beaches in Los Angeles. What I truly can’t forget are these unnamed coasts, roads, and winds. Next stop, Pismo Beach. It’s our first time staying in a seaside guesthouse truly facing the Pacific. (To be continued)

The Monterey Bay Aquarium charges $65 per adult for admission. Overall, it's quite nice—not very large, but thoughtfully designed and detailed. There are many beautiful jellyfish 🪼 to admire. 🦦 The highlight is two adorable otters that nap, scratch their bellies, and are so entertaining you could watch them all day. There are two large, deep tanks that span multiple floors, allowing you to view them from different angles. 🦈 One tank features small sharks, sea turtles, and other marine life. The other is the kelp forest exhibit, showcasing vibrant yellow kelp. The kelp forest is unexpectedly stunning. 🐟 There's an interactive area where you can touch kelp and small fish. Additionally, there's an ecological zone where you can observe water birds 🦩, a giant octopus, and whale fall bones. However, there are no large sharks or whales. The outdoor platform offers beautiful views. There's also a gift shop and café. The aquarium is extremely crowded. Overall, it's a good experience, though the ticket price feels a bit steep. Monterey town itself is lively and charming. Also, parking at the aquarium costs $22 per car, but you can park at nearby restaurants if you dine there. The town is small and walkable. After visiting the aquarium, you can head to 17-Mile Drive, which has an entrance fee of $12.50 and offers stunning scenery.
