#Unbeatable Sea View Morro Bay is one of the coastal cities in California. The main attraction of Morro Bay is Morro Rock, which is 570 feet high. The beach and mud of the bay are clean, the sea water is clear, and animals such as birds, fish and humans live freely. It was a sunny day with 80 degrees Fahrenheit. First time visiting Big Sur, how to explore Highway 1 all the way? Let me start by saying I set off from Monterey (San Francisco to Los Angeles, passing through Monterey) — Highway 1 Big Sur section! 📍Route: Monterey → Carmel → Big Sur Drive south along Highway 1 the whole way. The entire route features coastal cliffs, forests, and ocean waves, with almost no chance of getting lost. Recommended stops (north to south) 📍1. Garrapata State Park Overlook You’ll see this shortly after entering Big Sur. The cliffs and coastline here are especially spectacular, with fewer people, making it perfect for great photos. 📍2. Bixby Creek Bridge (famous bridge) The most iconic landmark in Big Sur! Built in 1932, about 85 meters high, it’s one of the most famous concrete arch bridges in the US. Many car commercials, movies, and Apple wallpapers have been shot here. 📍3. Point Sur Lighthouse (view from a distance only) A century-old lighthouse built on volcanic rock, full of history. If you have time, you can book a guided tour in advance. 📍4. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park If you like hiking, you can take the forest trails surrounded by redwoods, which are very refreshing. (I didn’t have time this trip because I was rushing to LA) 📍5. McWay Falls The most beautiful waterfall in Big Sur! About 24 meters high, it flows directly into the Pacific Ocean, one of the few “oceanfront waterfalls” in the US. It’s just a few minutes’ walk to the viewing platform, and the scenery is breathtaking. Continuing south, you can drive all the way to San Simeon, Hearst Castle, and even Morro Bay. If you have enough time, you can easily make it a full-day road trip. ⚠️A few must-know tips ✅ Parking Don’t park randomly on the roadside! Many areas prohibit parking. Scenic spots have designated parking lots. Make sure not to block the road when parking. ✅ Food There are limited restaurants in the area, and they tend to be crowded and pricey. It’s best to buy sandwiches, coffee, water, and snacks in Monterey beforehand and picnic by the sea for a better experience. ✅ Signal Many places have little to no cell signal. Be sure to download offline maps for navigation in advance. ✅ Gas Fill up before entering Big Sur. Gas stations are very few along the way and noticeably more expensive. ✅ Weather There’s often morning fog in summer. It’s best to start after 10 AM when the sky and ocean views are clearer. Even in summer, bring a jacket because the sea breeze is strong. ✨In short, Big Sur is like a movie set all along the way, and every shot looks like a masterpiece!

After finishing Sequoia and Yosemite, we spent a day retracing Highway 1. We left Yosemite around 3 PM and drove nearly 5 hours to stay in Seaside/Monterey. Twelve years ago, our first stop on our US trip was Highway 1. We spent 8-9 days visiting Vegas, LA, then drove Highway 1 to San Francisco, and even went all the way to Napa Valley. We spent 3 days on Highway 1, visiting Solvang, the Danish village (photo 10), Hearst Castle (photos 11-12), the seal haul-out spot (photo 13), Big Sur (photo 14), the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea (photos 15, 16), the 17-Mile Drive (photo 17), and Waddell Beach (photo 18), a popular spot for windsurfing and surfing. Unfortunately, during those 3 days on Highway 1, the weather was gloomy and overcast the entire time. It only cleared up on the day we left, which was a regret. This time, starting from Monterey (photos 1-2) heading south, we checked in at Bixby Creek Bridge (photos 3-4), McWay Falls (photo 5), Big Sur Pfeiffer Beach (the sand really is purple; said to be the only purple sand beach in the world; photos 6-8), and Morro Bay (you can actually see otters swimming right from the deck; plus seals lounging by the boats soaking up the sun; photo 9). This time, the weather was finally on our side—absolutely stunning!

After driving along Highway 1, these two restaurants are my top picks for dining. One is for the atmosphere, the other for seafood, and both were excellent. 📍El Torito (Monterey) Address: 600 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA 💰Average Price: Around $20-30 per person The restaurant is located right on the Cannery Row waterfront. I highly recommend sitting by the window; dining while enjoying the ocean view is truly relaxing. The space is large, and there's a bar. The atmosphere is especially great in the evening. Recommended Items👇 🌮 Fajitas (Teppanyaki) One of the restaurant's signature dishes. You can choose between beef or chicken. It sizzles on a hot plate, served with onions and bell peppers. You then wrap your own tortillas – a very Mexican experience. The portion is large; one serving is enough for two people. 🥑 Fresh Guacamole Made with freshly made guacamole and served with tortilla chips, it's a perfect appetizer. The avocado flavor is very fresh and not too rich. 🍹 Margarita What's a Mexican restaurant without a Margarita! If you're not driving, I highly recommend ordering one; the view of the ocean makes it feel especially relaxing. 🌯 Burrito / Enchiladas These are the two best choices for first-time Mexican food diners—they're the most universally appealing and unlikely to disappoint. 📍Tognazzini’s Dockside Restaurant (Morro Bay) Address: 1245 Embarcadero Morro Bay, CA 💰Average Price: Around $40 per person Right by the pier, specializing in fresh seafood. A perfect place for dinner after a drive to Big Sur. Recommended Orders👇 🥣 Clam Chowder This is my absolute favorite! It's very creamy and rich, with plenty of clams. The wind was strong at the beach at the end of June, so a bowl of this warmed me right up. 🦀 Cioppino (Seafood Stew) A seafood stew with a tomato base, containing clams, shrimp, crab, and other seafood. The flavor is sweet and savory, perfect for sharing between two people. 🦐 Seafood Pasta If you don't want the stew, the seafood pasta is also highly recommended. It's generously portioned with seafood, making it more filling than eating seafood alone. 🦪 Oysters Personally, I found the seafood flavor a bit too strong, not as impressive as the previous dishes. If you don't usually eat oysters, you might not need to order them. These are both restaurants I would choose again next time I'm on Highway 1.

Two days on Highway 1—feeling like either you have enough time or should spend three days! Early May recently, very few people, parking was never crowded, and no Chinese tourists at the photo spots. Compared to LA and Vegas, I prefer the small fishing villages along Highway 1 near San Francisco 🌊 DAY 1️⃣: Depart from San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf - Half Moon Bay - Monterey Old Fisherman’s Wharf - 17-Mile Drive - Carmel Town - Overnight in Paso Robles (Car pickup delayed us, so we only started driving around 10 AM. After enjoying Carmel, it was already 7 PM. We decided to skip the detour to Bixby Bridge and Big Sur, which was a bit regrettable. We arrived at our accommodation after 9 PM. Total driving time about 6.5 hours.) DAY 2️⃣: Morro Bay - Pismo Beach - Solvang Danish Village - Santa Barbara - Return to West Hollywood accommodation (About 4.5 hours driving, quite relaxed) Some thoughts: 🐳 If you’re interested in whale watching, make sure to spend enough time in Monterey. 🦦 You’re very likely to see sea otters in Morro Bay. I went at 10:30 AM; there was nothing at Morro Bay T Pier, but at Morro Rock I saw about 10 otters. 🌊 The 17-Mile Drive is definitely the highlight—allow plenty of time and drive along the coast. 🏄 If you’re not into surfing, you can skip Pismo Beach. 🏠 Comparing the three towns—Carmel, Solvang, and Santa Barbara—I liked Santa Barbara the most for its shopping options. Solvang is mainly for souvenirs, and Carmel is more artistic and refined, but some shops close by 6 PM. Finally, 🆓🅿️ Free Parking Guide: · Monterey: Pacific Street offers two hours of free parking (look for marked parking spaces and signs). · Half Moon Bay: Navigate to Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, you can enter. There’s a two-level parking garage with designated free Coastal Parking for visitors (just say you want to go to Coastal Parking at the entrance; spaces are limited, so don’t try during peak season). · Carmel Town: Park directly on the main street with 2 hours of free street parking. · Pismo Beach: Addie Street Surfer Parking Lot. · Morro Bay: Park at Morro Rock to watch sea otters. · Solvang Danish Village and Santa Barbara both have plenty of public parking. Just navigate there. Santa Barbara offers 75 minutes free, then $3 per hour afterward.

The only regret is that compressing the trip into two days was a bit rushed, and I didn’t get to fully explore 17 miles (the fee is justified). There are many free parking spots along the way, and for Big Sur, you only really need to go as far as Bixby Bridge. Highly recommend 17 miles, Santa Barbara, and Morro Bay (less popular but very surprising).

Took a little trip down central California to Morro Bay & Pismo Beach. It was beautiful and worth the drive. We didn’t get a hotel til we arrived to see the area and we wanted to get a hotel walking distance from the Bay. We ended up staying at a beautiful hotel located at the historical park. It was really close to the bay but not walking distance. We don’t regret it at all. The hotel had a wonderful restaurant, beautiful views from our hotel room where we were able to see the Morrow rock, bikes you could rent at a decent price, golfing across the street and many hiking trails near, also so much to do on the bay from tours on the bay (whale watching, kayaking, watching the sunset, drinks on the bay, and much more) to E bikes to tour the town or just relaxing on the beach and enjoy the fresh crisp air. We look at the sea and see a large rock called Morro Rock, a large volcano that was naturally formed from the extinction of lava. It is part of the Nine Sister mountain range or the 9 mountain ranges that are lined up in a single line, making Morro Rock a must-visit landmark. If the weather is good, we will see little Oong Oong (seals) living on the rocks and can see sharks swimming in this area. How to get there From the coast, there is a road that can access Morro Rock directly. No need to take a ferry. There is no toll fee. On the left hand side, there will be rocks without a beach. If we walk to the right hand side, we will see a beach connected to Morro Rock.
