A Winter Fairytale Journey in Germany and Austria Part 1: Munich + Salzburg
Hello everyone! This Christmas season, I took a trip to Germany and Austria, immersing myself in the winter wonderland of snow-covered landscapes, castles, lakes, and Christmas markets. It felt like stepping into a fairytale book. The journey started in Munich, focusing on places like Munich, Nuremberg in Germany, and Salzburg and Vienna in Austria, along with some stunning nearby attractions. This is Part 1, sharing the first few days of the trip. I highly recommend visiting in winter—it's cold but less crowded and incredibly beautiful!
Day 1: December 13 - Straight to Neuschwanstein Castle, A Fairytale Castle Experience
We landed at Munich Airport around 7 AM, picked up our luggage, and took the Lufthansa bus directly to Munich Central Station (tickets purchased online in advance, about a 40-minute ride). Our hotel, Sure Hotel by Best Western München Hauptbahnhof, was conveniently close to the station. After dropping off our luggage, we grabbed a quick breakfast.
Then, we headed straight to Neuschwanstein Castle! Using the Bayern Ticket (€42 for two people, purchased with cash at the station), we traveled from Munich Central to Füssen station. The train was comfortable and punctual. From Füssen, we took bus 78 to Hohenschwangau (bus fare included in the Bayern Ticket).
To reach the castle, you can either walk for 45 minutes or take a horse-drawn carriage. We chose to walk, getting some exercise along the way. The path had traces of snow, hinting at the magical days ahead. Our first stop was Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge), the best photo spot where the castle is perfectly framed in your camera! Afterward, we explored the castle surroundings up close and then leisurely walked back down the hill.
We also strolled along the shores of Alpsee Lake, with its crystal-clear waters and ducks swimming peacefully—a truly soothing sight.
Around 4 PM, we headed back to Munich, again using the Bayern Ticket. We walked to the Christmas market at Marienplatz, enjoyed hot dogs with mulled wine (Glühwein), and ended the day feeling warm and cozy. The Christmas lights, combined with the giant Christmas tree, created an incredibly festive atmosphere in the square!
Day 2: December 14 - From Munich to Salzburg, A Christmas-Themed City Stroll
We took a train to Salzburg at 7:22 AM (tickets booked via app in advance, €25.98 for two people, 1 hour 37 minutes ride).
Our hotel, Wyndham Grand Salzburg Conference Centre, was our first stop to drop off our luggage before heading out for breakfast.
We explored the city on foot, visiting Mirabell Gardens, Mozart's Birthplace, and Hohensalzburg Fortress. We took the funicular up to the fortress (€29 for two people). From the observation decks, we enjoyed panoramic views of Salzburg and its surroundings. The Christmas market at the top was a delightful surprise, and a bonus: free restrooms (a travel essential, haha)!
We then headed to the shopping street at Cathedral Square, browsing for souvenirs and enjoying the Christmas market. The lights, stalls, and warm drinks created a perfect festive vibe—winter is truly the best time to visit.
Day 3: December 15 - Königssee + Hintersee, Pristine Lakes and Majestic Scenery
At 7:30 AM, we took bus 840 from the station opposite Salzburg Hbf, transferring to buses 841/842 to reach Königssee (we bought a one-day pass for €27.2 for two people, covering round trips, with buses running every 30-60 minutes, about 1.5 hours travel time). The scenic route passed through snow-dusted villages, so beautiful we couldn't bear to sleep!
At Königssee, we took a sightseeing boat (€45.6 round trip for two people, boats depart every 30 minutes). The journey offered stunning views of mountains and crystal-clear waters. The boat captain even played music, demonstrating the echo effect of the sound bouncing off the mountains—so soothing! We stopped at St. Bartholomä, a picturesque church with red onion domes, and enjoyed our packed lunch while taking in the breathtaking mountain and lake views. Another bonus: free restrooms.
In the afternoon, we headed to Hintersee. From Königssee, we took bus 841 back to Berchtesgaden Hbf and transferred to bus 846.
The winter scenery along the way, with Alpine villages and snow-covered landscapes, was like a painting! At Hintersee, we strolled along the lake, capturing endless snowy scenes. There were also free restrooms near the bus stop.
We returned to Salzburg the same way, making for a relaxing journey back.
Day 4: December 16 - Hallstatt, Iconic Lakeside Town Photo Frenzy
At 6:30 AM, we took bus 150 from Salzburg Hbf F stop to Bad Ischl (about 1 hour 45 minutes, one-day pass for €64.8 for two people).
From there, we transferred to bus 542 to Gosaumühle (20 minutes) and then bus 543 to Hallstatt Lahn (10 minutes).
Upon arrival, we went on a photo spree! From the central square (Marktplatz) to the Parish Church of the Assumption (Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt), every step was a photo opportunity. The snow-covered town against the lake backdrop was like a postcard come to life.
We returned to Salzburg the same way, completing a smooth and memorable day trip.
