Nanxun Ancient Town Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
I'd rather go to these few ancient towns with fireworks than to Wuzhen in the Year of the Dragon
Strongly recommend saving this list for a long holiday visit to an ancient town!
1️⃣ Among the many ancient towns in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, if I could only visit one during the New Year, it would definitely be Nanxun. This ancient town, only a half-hour drive from Wuzhen, is connected to the residential area, so there are locals living in the town, giving it a lively, authentic atmosphere. In addition to wandering around the bridges and flowing water, there are several Republic of China-era buildings 🏠 worth visiting, such as the Liu's Ladder Shop, Zhang Shiming's Old Residence, and Jiaye Library.
It is recommended to drive there; there is a bus from Huzhou High-speed Railway Station, and it's even more convenient from Wuzhen, where you can hitch a ride.
2️⃣ When the scent of Anchang soy sauce duck begins to waft through the air, you know the New Year is here! People from Hangzhou rush to buy cured meat and soy sauce duck, all made with local Anchang soy sauce. This is an ancient town that even the locals from Shaoxing visit. I went there on the third day of last year's New Year, and there were still parking spots nearby. It was lively but not too crowded.
It's very close to Hangzhou, friendly for drivers, and can also be reached by subway 🚇 to the Textile City, then transfer to a direct bus. Over the years, it has not become overly commercialized. Sitting in a street-side tea house, watching the black-awning boats slowly pass by, that's the true essence of an ancient town.
3️⃣ The ancient village of Linkeng in Yongjia, Wenzhou, is located in Huangnan Township. It is recommended to drive there. The ancient village with its characteristic southern Zhejiang style and red lanterns hanging everywhere feels like a hidden paradise. Compared to Wuyuan, it's smaller and more exquisite, with more distinctive features. Linkeng was established during the Ming Dynasty as a settlement for the Mao clan and has a history of over 700 years. The architecture is a typical style of the southern Zhejiang mountainous area.
4️⃣ Longmen Ancient Town, about 1 hour from Hangzhou city center, is a lesser-known ancient village famous for being inhabited mostly by descendants of Sun Quan. Due to convenient transportation, many people from Hangzhou visit Longmen Ancient Town on the first day of the New Year to enjoy the town's specialty, pounded rice cake.
Longmen Ancient Town is located in Fuyang, and it's very convenient to drive there, only 1 hour. High-speed rail is also 🚄 convenient; from Fuyang Station, you can hitch a ride for about 35 yuan, or there are 🚌 buses that go directly to the ancient town from the station.
5️⃣ Zhouzhuang is connected by ancient bridges and rivers, linking old streets and Ming and Qing dynasty residences. As I stroll through the cobblestone alleys, between the black tiles and white walls, it feels as if time has stood still. Compared to Wuzhen, I prefer the remaining authentic atmosphere here.
In the early morning, wander leisurely through the ancient town, feeling the tranquility of the 'small bridges and flowing waters'. Or visit the ancient residences, such as Zhang Hall, Shen Hall, and Shen Sanwan's underwater tomb, all well-preserved Ming and Qing dwellings. If you're tired, you can visit the teahouse once frequented by the writer San Mao.
Tell me, which ancient town do you plan to visit this New Year to experience the festive atmosphere?

I thought Wuzhen was already beautiful, until I took a trip to Nanxun
I have returned from the ancient town of Nanxun, and overall, it was quite nice.
First, regarding transportation:
I took the high-speed train from Hangzhou to Huzhou station. After leaving Huzhou station, I took the 101 bus directly to the ancient town. The bus ride took about 1 hour and 45 minutes and cost only 2 yuan, which is very cheap. Friends can also take a taxi from Huzhou station, which would cost around 100 yuan. (For the 101 bus schedule, see attached image 9)
If you are nearby Zhejiang, you can also look for bus tickets to the ancient town. For example, I could buy a bus ticket from Hangzhou, and it takes about one to two hours to reach the ancient town. The overall duration is not much different from taking the high-speed train and then a bus, so it's up to personal preference.
Second, regarding the experience:
I arrived at the ancient town on the first evening. There were quite a few people at night, but it wasn't overcrowded, so it didn't affect the visit. Since it rained the next day, there weren't many people in the scenic area. I suggest choosing a sunny day to go, so you can see the sunset glow. Also, I personally think the night view is really good, and I suggest everyone must see the night view. The experience during the day and at night is completely different (images 3-8).
If you want to take a boat, you can do so at the Guanghui Bridge pier. It costs about forty to fifty yuan, I don't remember the exact amount. There are more people queuing for boats at night than during the day. In addition, there is a water bus during the day in the ancient town, which costs 3 yuan, very cheap.
Third, regarding food and cultural and creative products:
Nanxun Trotters
Pig's feet cost 40 yuan each, and pig's knuckles cost 80 yuan each. If you go alone, you can try the pig's feet. If you go with others, you can buy a knuckle, which is quite large and enough for several people to eat. There is also a Nanxun Trotters in the scenic area, where pig's feet are sold for 68 yuan each. Personally, I feel it's not much different from the 40 yuan ones, I didn't try it, so decide for yourself. (image 10)
Nanxun Cakes
20 yuan per box, these Nanxun cakes are not the big cake type, but more like small peach crisps, with many flavors to choose from, such as walnut, black sesame, goji berry, etc. I bought the black sesame flavor, and it tasted good. (image 11)
Shuangjiao Noodles
I recommend going to Longfeng Noodle House. The room is not big, and you may need to share a table if there are many people. The basic version costs 22 yuan per bowl and comes with two large pieces of meat. You can also choose other upgraded versions, which just add more ingredients, like beef, bamboo shoots, etc. I bought the basic version, and it was especially delicious. Some people say it's too sweet, but it might just be a matter of personal taste. Since you're here, you might as well try it. (image 12)
Stir-fried Dishes
If you want to eat stir-fried dishes, you can go to Baijianlou for private home-style dishes. There are many places to choose from, and you can enjoy the scenery while eating. Decide for yourself which one to choose. I haven't tried it.
Cultural and Creative Products
Fans are priced at 10, 15, 20, 30 yuan, etc. I suggest you buy them from the stalls in the square, where they cost 10 yuan each, cheaper than in the cultural and creative stores. Friends who want to keep a souvenir can also buy other small items. I bought a fridge magnet from The Cat's Sky Castle, which is inside the scenic area. (image 13)
That's about all I can think of. If other friends have questions, you can ask me.

Xiaolianzhuang Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Nanxun Ancient Town, a perfect fusion of Jiangnan water town and European architecture
Nanxun Ancient Town is located in Huzhou, Zhejiang, at the border with Wujiang District, Suzhou, with very convenient transportation. From Suzhou, there is a direct bus to Nanxun Bus Station every more than an hour on average.
Nanxun Ancient Town is famous for its long history and the feature of rivers running through the town. The area of the ancient town is not large, and it takes about half a day to tour around if you just have a cursory look. Moreover, Nanxun Ancient Town is a classic of Jiangnan architecture that combines Chinese and Western styles. Both traditional Jiangnan gardens and European architectural groups from the French Renaissance period are perfectly integrated here.
In Nanxun Ancient Town, you can visit famous attractions such as Zhang Shiming's Old House and Xiaolianzhuang. Zhang Shiming's Old House was built by Zhang Shiming, the grandson of Zhang Songxian, one of the 'Four Elephants' of Nanxun, consisting of typical Jiangnan traditional buildings and European architectural groups from the French Renaissance period, combining Chinese and Western styles. Xiaolianzhuang is the private garden of Liu Yong, the first of the 'Four Elephants' of Nanxun in the late Qing Dynasty, with pink walls and black tiles, lotus ponds and curved bridges, strange peaks and rocks, and pavilions, which can be compared with Suzhou gardens.
In addition, you can choose to enter the town for free after 5 pm (5:30 pm during daylight saving time). The lights are very beautiful at night, you can take a boat to enjoy the night view, stay overnight in the ancient town, and then use the ticket to visit the attractions the next day. You can also arrange a one-day or two-day tour to visit each attraction in detail.
Overall, Nanxun Ancient Town has both a profound historical and cultural heritage and a unique style of water town and Chinese and Western architecture. It is a place worth visiting.

Among the ancient towns in the Jiangnan area, my favorite is Nanxun
🌟 Where to go around Hangzhou in spring? I recommend visiting this ancient town, which not only has the charm of Jiangnan water towns but also a wealth of historical sites. This is the ancient town of Nanxun in Huzhou.
🌟 Nanxun has a long history, with human activity here since the Neolithic Age. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it became wealthy through the silk industry.
🌟 Today, when you come to Nanxun, you must take a good look at the following places.
1️⃣ First: Look at the Jiangnan residential houses
Located in the area crisscrossed by rivers, the locals in Nanxun live by the water and have built unique Jiangnan-style residences, among which the most characteristic are the Baijian Lou built during the Ming Dynasty. The hundred or so residences standing on both sides of the river, paired with the arch bridge in the middle, are especially reminiscent of the Jiangnan water town style.
2️⃣ Second: Architecture blending Chinese and Western styles
Walking in Nanxun, you will find many buildings that are a fusion of Chinese and Western styles. For example, the former residence of Zhang Shiming has Jiangnan-style carvings paired with a Western ballroom; Liu's Ladder Shop features a blend of Roman columns and horse-head walls; Western-style sofas and crystal chandeliers also interpret the Sino-Western fusion of Nanxun.
3️⃣ Third: Look at the garden style
There are also many Jiangnan-style gardens in Nanxun ancient town, especially the Xiaolian Zhuang. This was once the residence of the wealthiest man in Nanxun, combining a garden, family temple, and charity estate in one complex.
Xiaolian Zhuang has rockeries, Western-style buildings, maple and pine paths, which are particularly beautiful.
4️⃣ Finally, don't miss the Nanxun specialty cuisine, such as delicious fish ball soup, meat pancakes, mushy eel shreds, river delicacies, smoked bean tea, Nanxun pig's trotters, etc., all worth a try.

You must visit Nanxun Ancient Town at least once
Nanxun Ancient Town is truly worth visiting, with a pleasant environment and beautiful scenery, especially the night view, which is really beautiful! Only a few places require an additional ticket, the rest of the journey is free.

Zhangshiming Former Residence Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The former residence of Zhang Shiming was built in 1899-1905. The time span spans seven years. This house is also called Suidetang. It sits on the west side of the ancient creek and stands at 4,500 square meters. The pattern is five down, and the Chinese and Western style rooms are 150 together. It is a giant house with good preservation in the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the south of the Yangtze River.
After entering the mansion through the ticket gate, it is a Chinese-style courtyard with a strong atmosphere. The middle of the road is the main hall. The plaque of the "Zhede Hall" is hung on the innermost beam of the main hall. The bottom is the couplet. Elegant calligraphy and painting, in front of the fine wood furniture, the hall is on both sides of the Meilanjuzhu and other calligraphy.
The two-in and three-in-one styles of the mansion are still rich, but some of the building materials are imported, such as the two-in-one window with French colored flower glass. The four-in-one is the most western-style courtyard. In addition to the dressing room and the dressing room, there is also a luxurious ballroom, which is definitely a new thing in the Republic of China.
The bricks of the four-in-one Xiaoyang Building are mainly red, and the overall style is calm and wild. The floor tiles and paintings in the building are imported from France. The fireplace, the Collins iron column and the glass engraving perfectly replicate the 18th century European aristocratic style.
Due to its large size and unique shape and exquisite details, Zhang Shimings former residence has always been called the first residential house in Jiangnan.
Zhang Shiming, Ming Yuheng, the word Shi Ming, also known as the owner of the Garden, Nanxun, Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, was the 20th year of Emperor Guangxu of Qing Dynasty (1894). He was the grandson of the Nanxiang Four Elephants (the first richest man). It is also the cousin of another Nanzhao celebrity Kuomintang veteran Zhang Jingjiang. He loves to collect ancient books, stone inscriptions and strange stones. He is one of the four great collectors of the Nanzhao period.
The entire Zhang Shiming old residence covers an area of nearly 5,000 square meters. It is naturally very large in the Nanxun town, which is not particularly large in size. There are five buildings in the middle and west, and 150 buildings in the middle and west. The architectural style of the combination of Chinese and Western architecture is vividly reflected here. There is a Banana Hall in the old residence of Zhang Shiming. The porch on both sides is a woodcut banana leaf with holes in it. It is said that the gems are placed in the cave before, and the sun shines. Glittering, extraordinarily magnificent. However, this kind of jeweled scenery is now out of sight, but the diamond-shaped blue glass engraved in the window can still be seen today - these carved glass are produced in France from thousands of miles away, which was not cheap at the time. The price of the ocean glass may be comparable to today's LV, Herms, Zhang's financial strength, and there is no doubt.
and the surprise is not just that. It turns out that the Zhangju people in the Guangxu period were not the ones who read the sages of the sages, but rather a fashionable young man. In the backyard, we saw a completely European baroque style small building. The railings and tappets are all authentic European style, and there is even a luxurious ballroom with a dressing room and a dressing room!
The stone carving door of Zhang Shiming's old house is engraved with the "Worldly Pursuit", which is titled by the famous painter Wu Changshuo. It is intended to serve the German generation for generations. This is the family training of the Zhang family. This old style is unique in style, grand in structure and exquisite in craftsmanship. Many vivid wood carvings, brick carvings, stone carvings and glass carvings imported from France are called four musts.
The brick-and-mortem door of the hall of the north of the house, the carvings can be seen everywhere in the old house, especially the hollow brick carvings on the door, the wood carvings of the beams, the birds, the window skirts, etc., are exquisitely decorated. Top grade.
The banana room is the place to eat from the former Zhangjia, because the banana represents the evergreen season, so it is also called canna. The banana leaf-shaped wood carving handrails on both sides of the banana plant and in the corridor in front of the door, the lines are smart and unique. In the corridor at the door, I saw the tiles that were imported from France that year.
This time we started from the 100-story building, it runs from the east to the east suspension bridge, and north to the Gezhuang Bridge, along the river. The first stop was the old residence of Zhang Shiming. The reason why it was famous was because it was built by Jiang Yan, a rich man in the south of the Yangtze River, and a grandson of the "four elephants" in Nanxun.
Before the ancient Tunxi River, sitting west to the east, the entire mansion consists of the typical Jiangnan traditional architectural pattern and the French Renaissance Western European architectural complex. It is one of the most expensive giant houses in Jiangnan that basically maintains the old history of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is also known as the first home in Jiangnan.
The entrance is not spectacular, but when you step into the mansion, you can feel the grandeur and feel its rich elegance and unique style. The more you go inside, the more the courtyard feels deep, the winding corridor, the scattered floor, telling us its story.

House of Family Liu Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Liu's Ladder Number in Nanxun Ancient Town
Liu's Ladder Number, also known as Liu's Manor, commonly known as "Red House", was built by Liu Tiqing, the third son of Liu Yong, one of the "Four Elephants" in Nanxun. The entire building is composed of three parts: south, middle, and north. The central building is mainly composed of halls, halls, and buildings based on traditional Confucian cultural ideas. The most characteristic is the integration of Chinese architecture in the south and north with Western European Roman architecture. Among them, the facade of the European-style building in the north is high and magnificent, which is particularly spectacular. Under the western building, there is also a unforgettable historical tragedy-the first literary prison in the early Qing Dynasty, the "Zhuang's History Case".
Liu's Ladder Number is located in Nanxun Ancient Town, Huzhou City.
Classic Honglou: Liu's Ladder Number
🌠Liu's Ladder Number, also known as the Red House, was built in the 31st year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1905), and was the old residence of Liu Anping, the third son of Liu Yong, one of the four richest men in Nanxun.
🌅The overall architecture of Liu's Ladder Number is composed of three parts: south, middle, and north. The central building is a traditional Chinese building with halls, buildings, and compartments as the main body. The southern and northern parts incorporate Roman architectural style, which is particularly spectacular.

The six ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River are picturesque, among which the relatively quiet is the ancient town of Nanxun. The ancient town of Nanxun retains many famous houses. The Lius ladder is a special one. This house looks like Jiangnans traditional customs from the outside. There is a difference between reality and imagination. The owner of the
Liu Lai is Liu Anzhen, the third son of Liu Wei, the richest man in Nanzhao in the Qing Dynasty. The main hall of this house is called Chongdetang. Because the owners name is Qi Qing, it is also called Lius nickname. Called the Liu's ladder. The main hall of the
Liu Lai is a typical Jiangnan style. There are various valuable wooden furniture in the hall. The details of these furniture are very fine. On the wall in the middle of the hall is a landscape painting and two pairs of couplets, showing the owner's feelings and family style.
Going inside, Jiangnan style faded, and suddenly found that Western-style architectural art became the main tone. In the late Qing Dynasty, there could be such a house, indicating the prosperity of Jiangnan's overseas trade and the frequent exchange of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. The
Western building is located in the north of the Liu's Ladder. The building has only two floors and the exterior is covered with red bricks. The outsiders usually call it the "red house." The
red house has a unique shape, and the hall also displays a variety of sculptures and precious artifacts. This is a place suitable for taking pictures of people. Many young people come to take pictures of art.
Lius study room Cleaning Book House embodies the masters understanding and pursuit of culture. Only when he reads a good book can he be awake and do things. Western-style hanging lamps extend from the Chinese-style roof and have a unique flavor.
The lotus has six petals, eight petals, and seven petals. Her color is very bright, the petals are pink, and a petal like a curved boat. The flower is golden yellow, wrapped in immature lotus seeds. I have seen it in the paintings and calligraphy before, and I dont even know how to paint the face of it. I have to see its elegance and goodness today. I am delighted by the joy and excitement. In this time of vain in the south of the Yangtze River, there is always something to be happy, and reward is one of them. Yes, the lotus is not extravagant, not uncommon. When the spark of life is the hottest, it smiles slightly, giving the blue sky a golden glaze. It does not force glitz, but has a fresh and lively beauty; it does not insist on glory, but has a quiet silence. On the huge green lotus leaf, the small drops of water roll around, and in the sunshine, the water drops sparkle, and it looks beautiful.
This is the largest mansion in the old town of Nanxun. After a hundred years, the color is still bright and the charm is still there. Strolling under the Western-style promenade, you will experience the European style scattered in the waters of the south of the Yangtze River 100 years ago. After a while, I will bring a Chinese-style courtyard, so that I will continue to cross, and the door of space will open here, letting you appreciate the beauty of this combination of Chinese and Western!
