Step into a town where the sunshine stops time: Napier
If there’s a city on New Zealand’s North Island that can make you “travel back a hundred years at a glance,” it must be Napier. This is a seaside town in Hawke’s Bay, also known as the world’s most beautiful Art Deco city.
The first time you come, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into an old movie—the buildings with soft colors and clean lines line the streets, accompanied by the sea breeze, making the whole city slow down and feel warm.
🏙 Napier: A Rebirth After Disaster
The 1931 earthquake almost destroyed the entire city, but the rebuilt Napier was “reborn from the ashes,” adopting a unified Art Deco architectural style.
These buildings aren’t kept in museums; they are everywhere—banks, cafes, post offices, ice cream shops—all looking like they stepped out of the 1930s.
You can casually walk the streets, and every corner is perfect for photos.
🎨 Must-Visit Attractions
1. Art Deco Masonic Hotel
The town’s most iconic landmark. Its pale yellow exterior and clean geometric lines look like a hotel straight out of the movie "The Great Gatsby."
2. Marine Parade
Napier’s “coastal corridor.” The sea breeze is very pleasant, with a long black sand beach, walking paths, fountains, and sculptures. A stroll at dusk is truly healing.
Tip: The morning sunlight is especially soft, perfect for taking photos of silhouettes by the sea.
3. Napier Soundshell & Colonnade
A seashell-shaped theater by the sea with a colorful exterior that’s very photogenic. It’s also the main stage for the Art Deco Weekend.
4. Memorial Park & Pania of the Reef Statue
She is a local Māori legend and a small landmark of Napier.
🍇 Food & Wine: The Soul of Hawke’s Bay
Hawke’s Bay, where Napier is located, is one of New Zealand’s most famous wine regions.
There are plenty of wineries here, and you can’t go wrong with any of them.

There’s a feeling here that “life doesn’t have to be rushed.”
It’s not as complicated as Auckland, nor as crowded with tourists as Queenstown, but quietly and interestingly welcomes you.
You’ll notice:
· The streets are always as clean as if just washed
· The sea breeze is gentle
· The buildings look like they stepped out of an art manual
· People move slowly but are in a good mood
Napier may seem vintage, but it feels very relaxed and healing.
