It’s a great way to experience daily life like a local, and sometimes it’s the best way to discover places we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. That said… after a long day of walking 20,000+ steps, there’s nothing wrong with calling an Uber or Bolt. 😅 Sometimes you just want the comfort of being dropped off exactly where you’re staying and getting back to rest as quickly as possible. With Premier Inn, you always know what to expect—comfortable sleep and a satisfying breakfast. My only regret was skipping the Premier Plus room, but that was purely for the coffee! The location is fantastic, right by the Tyne, making it convenient to walk everywhere. It's a shame the bridge was obscured by scaffolding. The reception staff were pleasant. While it could use some TLC, it was spotless and had a great shower. Metro and main station are nearby, as are Newcastle Castle and other attractions. A lovely walk along the quayside and across the bridges adds to the charm.

We were warmly welcomed by the lovely Malcolm at reception, who kindly provided guidance on how long it would take to walk to the concert venue. Check-in was smooth and straightforward. Our room was on the first floor with a charming view of the bridge. It was spacious, cozy, and spotlessly clean. After the concert, we appreciated being greeted by night security, which was reassuring. Though we skipped breakfast this time, we plan to try it next time. Before leaving, we strolled to the Sunday Market on the quay, which was fantastic. The location, cleanliness, friendliness, and the modern look of the bar, restaurant, and reception all deserve a solid 10/10. We’ll definitely return to see Malcolm again!

This hotel truly surpassed our expectations! Having stayed at other Maldron locations before, I’ve always found them to be excellent, but the Newcastle hotel was outstanding! Sophia, the receptionist, was incredibly welcoming, kind, and so thoughtful with our 5-year-old son. Every request we made was accommodated—Sophia really went the extra mile to ensure our visit was comfortable and enjoyable. The rest of the staff were equally polite and friendly. The breakfast was absolutely superb, featuring some delightful healthy options that I particularly appreciated. Rooms were cleaned daily, and dinner was delicious. Amazing value, fantastic location—there’s no doubt we’ll return to the Maldron Newcastle 100%!

Stayed here in March 2026 to catch up with some friends in Newcastle, and it was fantastic from start to finish. The warm welcome from Dave at Reception was outstanding (apparently he won best welcome in the North East—and it’s easy to see why!). Claire and Neil at Reception were just as friendly and helpful whenever I needed assistance. The room was absolutely gorgeous! The hotel has recently undergone renovations, and it really shows. I was upgraded to a Suite, and the room was spacious, featuring a super comfy bed and a stunning view of the Tyne. The bathroom amenities were lovely, and the bathtub was incredible! While I didn’t get to dine at the hotel because of the incredible options nearby, I did visit the bar—and Shaun makes an excellent negroni. Breakfast each morning was superb, and Tessie and Tirso provided outstanding service, going above and beyond to ensure I was happy and had everything I needed. I strongly recommend this hotel—check out the refurbishment and meet the amazing team!

My wife and I stayed on Sunday, July 20th. The Malmaison is ideally situated for a visit to the Quayside, with parking conveniently located just across the road. Check-in was smooth—Clare was professional, helpful, and welcoming. We were fortunate to receive an upgrade to a Club Deluxe room, which was spacious, impeccably clean, and equipped with everything we needed, including a very comfortable large bed. The bar was cozy and offered a great variety of drinks. Breakfast was outstanding—I had the full English, and my wife enjoyed the Eggs California; both were exceptional, along with a wide array of options from the continental selection. Sarah, who served us, was attentive, friendly, and helpful. Checking out was effortless thanks to Dave, who was friendly, accommodating, and made us feel valued. Overall, our experience at the Malmaison was truly excellent.

My partner used to reside near Jesmond Dene, and we always pondered visiting. When I decided to propose, I knew this hotel would be the perfect setting. I reserved the Apartment Suite, which was fantastic; the room was roomy and tastefully decorated, complimenting the building and surrounding area, and the private terrace was ideal. Upon booking, I informed the hotel of my intent, and everyone went above and beyond. Check-in staff like Thomas were accommodating, even checking on my feelings and eager to hear the full proposal story. The bar and restaurant staff during our celebratory meal were delightful and seemed genuinely invested in our experience. I wish I could recall all their names, as they truly deserve commendation. The hotel's keen attention to detail greatly enhanced our visit. Its prime location offers easy access to Jesmond's numerous restaurants, bars, and shops, not to mention the beauty of Jesmond Dene itself. Overall, I would gladly recommend the hotel to anyone and will certainly return in the future.

Durham is small, walkable, and full of history — perfect for a one-day trip. Here’s how I explored it: Morning Durham Cathedral – Start here. Free to enter, beautiful inside, and if you have the energy, climb the tower for amazing city views. Durham Castle – Right next to the cathedral. Guided tours only, but worth it to see how it changed from fortress to university. Late Morning Market Square & Indoor Market Hall – A lively spot with shops, cafés, and stalls. Good for a quick coffee, snack, or local souvenirs. Lunch Head to a riverside pub or café. The views of the River Wear with the cathedral above are unforgettable. Afternoon Riverside Walk – Take the loop path along the River Wear. It’s peaceful and gives you the best photo spots of the cathedral, especially near Prebends Bridge. Botanic Gardens – If you have time, these gardens are calm, colourful, and a nice change of pace after the busy centre. Tips: Wear comfy shoes — Durham is hilly with cobbled streets. The cathedral is free, but the tower climb and castle tours need tickets. Everything is close by, so no need for buses or taxis. Durham is only 15 minutes by train from Newcastle. Why Go? In just one day you get history, local life, and riverside scenery. We walked along the waterfront past converted warehouses, modern art spaces, and historic pubs. The Tyne Bridge is iconic, but the Gateshead Millennium Bridge stole the show especially at night when it lit up and tilted for passing boats. Great spots for photos, people-watching, and catching the city’s creative energy. Rating – 8.5/10 BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art & Sage Gateshead Address – Gateshead Quays, just across the Millennium Bridge Highlights – We crossed into Gateshead to visit the BALTIC, a former flour mill turned cutting-edge gallery. The exhibitions were bold and experimental, and the top-floor viewing platform gave panoramic views over the city and river. Right next door, the Sage Gateshead stood like a shimmering wave even if you don’t go inside, the architecture alone is worth the walk. The whole area felt like a creative hub, with a distinctly northern edge. Rating – 8/10 Victoria Tunnel & Ouseburn Valley Address – Tours start from Lime Street, Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle NE1 Highlights – For something more underground (literally), we toured the Victoria Tunnel a 19th-century coal wagon route turned WWII air raid shelter. It was a bit eerie, dimly lit, and full of history, with guides who brought the past to life. Nearby, Ouseburn felt like Newcastle’s alternative heart old industrial buildings now filled with indie breweries, street art, music venues, and cozy cafés along the canal. Gritty in the best way. Rating – 8.5/10

Visit the Baltic centre to see the art displays and get a nice view from the top. 🏨 Accommodation: Rooms Inn if you want cheap and cheerful. Hilton hotel in Gateshead for a great location and more class. 🍴 Food Recommendations Persian Bite for cheap and cheerful. Grainger market has lots of nice lunch options. Olive & Bean for brunch Proven Goods for the best doughnuts in the world 📌 Tips On the face of it there isn’t loads to see in Newcastle but when you are relaxed and start to walk around you find lots of hidden gems. On a crisp morning, I took the Metro to nearby Tynemouth. The seaside town felt peaceful and raw in winter. Waves crashed against the shore, and the sky seemed endless. I explored the ruins of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, standing tall on a cliff above the sea. The wind was fierce, but the view was worth it—wild, dramatic, and unforgettable. I ended the day with hot fish and chips by the beach, watching seagulls wheel above the waves. The cold didn’t matter; the moment was perfect.
