Slieve Donard

What an amazing stay! We were greeted by a rainbow when we pulled in (see photo) We spent 4 nights here and everything about the stay was perfect. The rooms were luxurious and well appointed.
The grounds, the facility, the bar, the restaurants, the spa and the entire staff here were excellent.
Truly not one thing to complain about. This is obviously a very well managed property and I truly appreciate the efforts they made to make our stay perfect.
The local town, Newcastle, is easily walkable and has many shops, pubs and restaurants. There is also a seaside promenade that's nice to walk along.
You won't go wrong staying at Slieve Donard!

Stroll to the end of the Royal County Down Golf Links to watch the golfers against one of the world's most scenic courses, then continue to the historic Newcastle Pier for panoramic views back toward the town.
Afternoon: Mountain Footpaths & Sweet Treats
For the active solo traveler, access the Mourne Mountains is right from the town. A walk up to Donard Forest or along the Glen River offers breathtaking views without a strenuous summit climb. Afterwards, reward yourself with a famous tray of chips from Johnny Joe's or an ice cream from a seafront shop, enjoyed on a bench facing the sea.

Your Solo Sentinel: Dundrum Castle, County Down
#hellohalloween
Perched high on a hill, this Norman ruin offers more than ancient stones—it provides a sweeping perspective of Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains, a view best earned and savored alone.
Your Perfect Solo Itinerary:
Morning: A Conquest of Your Own
Begin your ascent from the village. The walk up to the castle is part of the experience, building anticipation. Once at the top, step through the gatehouse and into the spacious bailey. With the audio guide or information panels as your companion, explore the mighty keep and surrounding ruins. Imagine the centuries of history that have unfolded here, from Norman lords to Victorian picnickers.
Afternoon: A View to Keep
The real treasure is the 360-degree panorama. Find a spot on the ancient walls to take it all in: the sandy curve of the bay, the shimmering sea, and the majestic Mournes sweeping down to the coast. This is your moment for quiet reflection, a picnic with a view, or simply breathing in the crisp coastal air.
Solo Traveler Tips:
· Wear Sturdy Shoes: The path and grounds are grassy and can be uneven.
· Check the Wind: It can be breezy at the top—an extra layer is always a good idea.
· Extend Your Walk: Link your visit to the Mourne Coastal Path for a bracing seaside walk with the castle as your backdrop.
· Embrace the Atmosphere: Let your imagination fill in the gaps of the ruins. The solitude makes the history feel more personal.
Claim this historic viewpoint as your own.

Tollymore Forest, Mourne Mountains, and Ballintoy
Begin your adventure at Tollymore Forest Park, a verdant woodland that served as the Woods of Winterfell, where Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch found the direwolves. Wander through the meandering paths and scenic streams, then travel south to the Mourne Mountains. These grand peaks were the backdrop for scenes beyond the Wall, including Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch's journey. Finally, head to Ballintoy, where the craggy coastline represented the Iron Islands.
