For a first visit, a regular car will suffice unless you plan to tackle mountains or sands on your own (which, by the way, is prohibited by rental rules even for 4WD vehicles). Distances are vast, and public transport is virtually non-existent. Allocate a couple of days to explore the city, visit the old town of Nizwa, and definitely venture into the desert (on the edge of the desert, you can find Bedouin camps on the map—each of them can organize a tour into the sands or camel rides for you). If desired, you can also arrange a seaside vacation—diving with turtles, dolphin watching, etc. There are both individual and group tours available. If you visit during the right season, you can witness baby turtles hatching (usually from April to July, but it's best to confirm). Strolling around the city is better in the evening; firstly, the heat subsides, and secondly, the city lights up beautifully. Visit the "Rozna" restaurant near the airport. The restaurant is designed like a fortress, and the menu features authentic Omani dishes. I highly recommend the goat meat, slow-cooked for two days in an earthen oven.

The best time to visit is between October and March. Even in September or April, if the temperature and humidity are low, it can be quite comfortable. However, the midday heat during the peak summer season can be overwhelming 🥵. While Nizwa can be visited as a day trip from Muscat, staying for at least one night is highly recommended. The atmosphere inside the castle from evening to night is incredibly charming.
