Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture - A Hidden Gem in Western Yunnan
Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture is located in the western part of Yunnan Province, within the Nujiang Gorge of the Hengduan Mountains, bordering Myanmar to the west. G219 serves as the main (and perhaps the only) transportation route running north-south through the prefecture. The road conditions on the Nujiang section of G219 are excellent, but as you continue from Bingzhongluo Town towards Chayu County in Nyingchi City, the road conditions suddenly deteriorate, turning into the famous 'Bingcha-Cha' crossing route.
Our trip focused on Nujiang Prefecture and was conducted in winter. Daytime temperatures in the dry-hot valley can exceed 20 degrees Celsius, but nighttime temperatures are low, so be sure to adjust your clothing accordingly.
The Nu River is majestic and grand during the summer flood season, while in winter, it shows a quieter side. Without the influx of rainwater carrying sediment, the quiet waters of the Nu River in winter reveal a rare blue color, like a gemstone.
Not far into Nujiang Prefecture, you will reach the capital, Lushui City. The county town is built along the Nujiang Gorge, with a narrow and long structure. The local economy is not highly developed, and the roads in the town are narrow with compact houses due to the terrain.
Less than an hour's drive from Lushui City, you can reach Dengeng Bathhouse. Dengeng Bathhouse is a free natural hot spring located by the Nu River. During the flood season, the rising waters of the Nu River submerge it, while in the dry season, it emerges. Many local Nu and Lisu people enjoy soaking in the hot spring and are very enthusiastic about introducing the area to visitors. The hot spring is highly recommended.
Near the hot spring, you can also experience the Nu River zip line, a paid activity developed by local villagers. The zip line is a traditional way for locals to cross the river before bridges were built. A round trip costs 50 yuan and is quite thrilling.
Heading upstream along G219, you can stay in Laomudeng Village. It is recommended to stay in a high-altitude guesthouse to enjoy views of the Nujiang Gorge, Crown Mountain, and even the perennial snow on Gaoligong Mountain. The local people are simple and honest, and prices are not high. The guesthouse owner where we stayed was a Nu girl who was very hospitable and cooked delicious traditional local food.
Further up from Laomudeng Village is the former capital of Nujiang Prefecture, the lost town of Zhiziluo. Zhiziluo was once a major transportation hub connecting Nujiang Prefecture with the outside world, with frequent trade and gradual development. However, due to geological factors, all residents moved to Lushui City, leaving behind an empty town that still retains the appearance of the last century.
Continuing south, you will pass Shiyueliang. Shiyueliang is a rock formation with a large circular hole in the middle, formed by erosion. Later, the mountain body uplifted, pushing it to the top of the mountain, resembling a full moon. You can view it from a viewing platform beside G219, and you should also be able to climb up if you enter the scenic area.
The innermost part of Nujiang Prefecture is the famous Bingzhongluo Township. Overlooking from the viewing platform, it is indeed a place where immortals reside. The houses on the dam are scattered, with snow-capped mountains above and the rushing Nu River below. Occasionally, you can hear the crowing of roosters and barking of dogs, with smoke curling up from the rooftops, presenting a peaceful scene. The first bend of the Nu River is also spectacular, and it is recommended to go to the viewing platform on the mountain top, which all the guesthouse owners know how to reach.
Crossing the Nujiang Gorge to the west, you can reach Dulongjiang Township. If you are lucky, you may see tattooed women, but the road conditions are poor, and you need to make a reservation to enter.
Precautions:
1. Driving in the valley, be cautious of falling rocks on cliffside roads.
2. There are many blind turns, so slow down and drive carefully.
3. Adjust your clothing in a timely manner.
4. Respect religious beliefs. French missionaries preached in Nujiang Prefecture in the last century, and there are churches and a certain number of Christians in the area (such as in Laomudeng). After passing Bingzhongluo, you will soon enter the Tibetan area, where Tibetan Buddhism also appears as you go further in.
Nujiang, the place with the most ethnic diversity

The Mysterious Nu River
The Nu River, it is a river full of charm! It winds like a giant dragon, threading through towering mountains.
The waters of the Nu River surge ceaselessly, emitting a powerful roar, as if narrating ancient tales. The scenery along the banks is picturesque, with verdant mountains and the azure sky reflecting each other, captivating all who gaze upon it.
On the Nu River, one can also witness the unique culture of zip-lining, where people, with courage and skill, zip across the river's surface, a scene both thrilling and exhilarating!
Nu River, you are a precious gift bestowed upon us by nature, your beauty, mystery, majesty, grandeur, and imposing presence forever mesmerizing!
My favorite off-the-beaten-path destination in Yunnan
My favorite off-the-beaten-path destination in Yunnan.
Here, there is no summer heat, only a refreshing breeze and cool scenery.
Here, there are no noisy streets or towering city buildings, only high mountains, forests, meadows, lakes, cattle, sheep, horses, and the rich and colorful Tibetan culture~ This place is the Nujiang River in Yunnan
A little-known village in Yunnan with almost zero tourists, you've definitely never heard of it~
Have you been wandering only around popular spots like Dali and Lijiang when you come to Yunnan? Today, I want to recommend to my friends the most niche village in Yunnan that 99% of people have definitely never heard the name of!
Yunnan Nujiang·Luoguqing
This is an ancient and secluded Pumi ethnic village, distributed along the undulating mountains, with patches of grey tiles and red walls. A casual snapshot with your phone is like a scene from a movie, especially in the early morning when the mist is swirling or after the rain clears, the entire forest is filled with clouds, making you feel as if you've traveled back to a village from hundreds of years ago, unconcerned with worldly affairs.
Behind the village lies a vast highland pasture comparable to Xinjiang, where in May and June, wildflowers bloom in abundance, cattle and sheep graze in herds, and secluded wooden cabins stand in rows. Running and frolicking here, feeling the breath of nature, must be a joyful thing.
The Pumi villagers here are simple and kind-hearted. In the morning, they ride horses to herd cattle and sheep on the mountains, and the children are very cute, taking you to pick walnuts; eating at a farmhouse feast, the pork from the free-range black pigs is so good it brings tears to your eyes, and at night you can dance around a bonfire, and although uncoordinated, it's so much fun.
Apart from the village scenery and Pumi culture, a hidden hiking trail here also attracts many hiking enthusiasts from far and wide.
Luoguqing Big Sheep Pasture 24KM Hiking Trail, over 1000 meters lower in altitude than Yubeng, also boasts majestic snow-capped mountains, primeval forests, Danxia canyons, and vast flower fields. In May and June, you can see rhododendrons, and in July and August, you can pick matsutake and other mushrooms.
Currently, there are only two or three guesthouses in the village, farm stays, and the wild luxury guesthouse themed on hiking, Nujiang·Shujia Wuxiang, where every window offers a view. Everyone can choose according to their needs.
【Hotel News】Canyon Hotel Trial Operation|Songzan Stone Moon Mountain House Starts Days in the Clouds
On January 20, Songzan Stone Moon Mountain House began trial operation, the beauty of the canyon, hidden. Mr. Baima Duoji, the founder of Songzan, has come to Nujiang several times to choose the location for the hotel.
In Mr. Baima Duoji's view, Songzan Stone Moon Mountain, as the first canyon hotel of Songzan, "stands above the sea of clouds, on the top of the cliff, far away from the hustle and bustle", will bring Songzan family members the ultimate canyon view and comfortable vacation experience.
Looking north from any room in the hotel, you can see a never-setting bright moon hanging in the distant mountains, that is the sacred 'Stone Moon' in the hearts of the Lisu people.

"Spring Day Searching for Fang" (3) - Dameiyubian "Bingzhongluo"
Gongshan, which lived last night, is the most northwestern border county in Yunnan, and has a scent of anger (Rage fat girl boss)
Love House and Wu, immediately Tibetan breakfast is also it
Early in the morning, the mountain is introduced in the direction. It is like opening a fantasy journey of the original forest.
Sunlight penetrates through the treetops and scatters the mottled gold. The petals of the alpine rhododendrons fell into a natural red carpet, and the various unknown birds in the shade of the trees screamed.
This is a spring day in Gaoligong Mountain, but in my case it is like a fantasy.
Gaoligong Mountain is an important part of China's national nature reserves, the World Biosphere Reserve, and the Three Rivers Parallel World Natural Heritage. Gaoligong Mountain is known as the World Species Genebank, the World Natural Museum, and The Sanctuary of Life. "The paradise of wild animals", "the birthplace of mammalian ancestors", "the cradle of East Asian flora", "the double-sided bookshelf of humans". Walking on the Gaoligong Mountain, you can see the very rare animals and plants in the daily life, as well as the natural hot springs in the wild; the precious Yunnan Baiyao raw material - spatholobus.
