An adventure on Penida Island in Bali, Indonesia: venturing into one of the most magnificent corners of the earth | A toddler's journey
Most people come to Bali for the crystal-clear waters of Lembongan Island, but miss the more pristine and magnificent island next door, Nusa Penida. Here, there are no fancy resorts, only rugged coastlines reminiscent of Jurassic Park, diamond-studded white sand beaches, and breathtaking scenery that requires a bit of courage to reach. We spent a day on a heart-stirring island adventure.
🧭 1-Day Slow Travel Itinerary (Family Challenge Version) Lower your expectations and embrace the pristine. Nusa Penida has bumpy roads, long drives between attractions, and basic facilities. If traveling with toddlers, hiring a car and an experienced local driver is essential for safety and comfort. Two itinerary options are suggested:
• East Coast Option (More Relaxed, More Scenic):
Morning: Take a speedboat from Sanur Pier in Bali to Banjarnu Port on Nusa Penida. Head straight to the East Coast, visiting Atu Beach/Diamond Beach (viewable from a viewpoint, but the downhill steps are extremely steep; not recommended for children). Afterwards, visit the nearby treehouses and Thousand Islands viewpoint for panoramic views of the scattered sea hills.
Afternoon: Return to the pier area for snorkeling in the calm waters of Crystal Bay or relaxing on the beach, concluding the tour.
West Route Wonders (More Classic, Longer Distance):
Morning: Upon arrival on the island, head straight to the West Route to marvel at the wonders of nature at Broken Beach and Angel Bath (safety is paramount; do not approach the bath's edge during high tide).
Noon: Head to the world-famous Klingkin Beach (Hanauka Bay) for photos at the cliffside viewpoint (again, the steep and dangerous path into the sea is not suitable for young children).
Afternoon: On the return journey, Crystal Bay may be visited if conditions permit before departing the island.
🚩 Extreme Option for Brave Toddlers: If the family is energetic and doesn't mind a very rushed schedule, it's theoretically possible to combine the main viewpoints on the East and West routes (Diamond Beach, Thousand Islands viewpoint, Broken Beach, Angel Bath, Klingkin Beach viewpoint) in one day. This will be an extreme challenge, a race against time, with at least 7-9 hours spent on bumpy road trips and only short stops at each attraction. Be sure to take the earliest ferry and hire a full-day 4x4 vehicle.
👨👩👧 Family Travel Guide
1. Mindset First: This is not a vacation for enjoying services, but a family adventure. Accept its imperfections to truly appreciate its grandeur.
2. Safety is Paramount: Areas like Klingin Beach, Diamond Beach, and Angel Baths are rugged; children must be held tightly and only allowed to play in designated safe areas. Many popular photo spots have risks; please assess them rationally.
3. Transportation and Driver: Book a full-day vehicle in advance. A good driver will act as a guide, photographer, and safety officer. Choose a well-maintained 4x4 vehicle.
4. Gear is Key: Wear comfortable, non-slip walking shoes, a hat, and sunglasses. Prepare ample sunscreen, drinking water, snacks, and wet wipes (supplies are scarce on the island). Bring extra changes of clothes for children.
5. Time Management: The boat trip takes approximately 40 minutes one way, and traffic on the island is slow. It is recommended to take the earliest boat (7:00-8:00 AM) and the latest boat (4:00-5:00 PM) to return, allowing ample buffer time.
💭 Travel Reflections: Standing atop the cliffs of Klingkin Beach, or gazing at the emerald waters of Angel Bath, you'll feel the insignificance of humanity and the grandeur of nature. The scenery here needs no filter; it's pristine, wild, and undeniably powerful. Even small travelers can challenge the most challenging paths, and in safe places, be awestruck by the beauty of this planet – isn't that a deeper form of shared experience? As the speedboat pulls away, watching the waves crash against the rocks gradually blur, you'll understand that Nusa Penida offers more than just comfort; it provides an unforgettable memory of the Earth as it truly is.
