#photovsrealitytravel I’ve been to Santorini twice, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the island can look very different from the famous photos you see online. The iconic views are absolutely beautiful, but getting that perfect, empty postcard shot isn’t always as easy as it looks. During busy periods, the crowds can be huge, especially around the most famous viewpoints. Sometimes you’re waiting for people to move, squeezing into a tiny spot, or simply accepting that there will be a few strangers in the background. 😅 And honestly, not every corner of Santorini is as photogenic as Instagram makes it seem. However, choosing the right base and planning transportation are crucial! 🏨 Recommended Accommodation: Stay in Fira Most buses depart and arrive in Fira, making it a convenient base for getting around. Even in the off-season, many restaurants remain open, so finding meals is not a problem. We stayed at Cycladic Suites & Spa: ・About a 10-minute walk from the bus station ・The area around the hotel has steep slopes and many stairs, making suitcase transport a bit challenging ・The room features a steam sauna, and there’s a heated outdoor pool, allowing you to enjoy the hotel even on bad weather days ・Plus, lots of friendly cats came to visit, which was truly heartwarming…♡ One of the perks of the off-season is being able to stay at great hotels for a reasonable price! Considering the weather, it’s better to prioritize the comfort of the hotel itself over the view. 🚌 Always Check the Bus Timetable in Advance As mentioned before, the number of buses is very limited. On a rainy day, we missed the bus and ended up hitching a ride with a couple from Athens who had rented a car. 🍽 The Only Open Restaurant in Oia ・Lotza Most places were closed, but this restaurant was open, and both the food and desserts were delicious. 🍴 Recommended Restaurants in Fira ・Pelican Kipos cafe and wine restaurant Great atmosphere and satisfying meals. ・Ilios Bakery – All-Day Cafe, Bakery & Restaurant A wide variety of large breads. We took some out to enjoy while admiring the scenery on a sunny day. 🍷 Wine Tasting at a Winery Enjoy wine tasting paired with ham, cheese, olives, and snacks. It’s a bus stop along the way, so be mindful of the return bus schedule. Although we didn’t visit this time, winery tours are also available. To fully enjoy the quiet charm of Santorini in the off-season, we found that "staying in Fira and keeping track of bus schedules" were key points.

The "Nomikou Street" next to the church is the main road in Oia, with many local shops and restaurants on both sides. Walking west along the main road, you will see the "Oia Castle", which is where most people gather to watch the sunset in Oia. The sunset here is really beautiful. When the sunset appears, everyone claps and cheers. I think Oia’s sea view, sunset, and buildings are perfectly combined to outline an irreplaceable classic picture that fascinates and amazes the world. Figure 1-4: Sunset shooting point - Oia Castle is the highlight of the entire Oia town. Every sunset, the platform of Oia Castle is crowded with people. Figure 5: Church of Panagia Akathistos Hymn The church was originally built within the walls of Oia Castle. After the 1956 earthquake, the church was moved to its current location in the center of the village and rebuilt on higher and more stable ground. The white building with a blue dome and arched windows commemorates an icon of the Virgin Mary that was found in the sea by a fisherman, who carried it to the church along with a priest. The next day, the icon was suddenly moved from the church to the castle. Every time the citizens returned the icon to the church, it was said to miraculously return to the castle. Figure 6-8: "Church of Agios Nikolaos", the pink bell tower in front of the blue-domed church is quite rare in Santorini.

I met a Japanese and we had fun there

After playing in the water, we traveled to our new accommodation in Oia with our luggage packed in the back of the car, which led to the first peak of the trip. The incident at that time was that we turned into the wrong alley and when driving back to the main road, which was quite steep, it turned out that the car could not go up because it was probably too heavy. We had to pull the handbrake and have the 3 people sitting in the back seat get out of the car before we could continue. We thought the car would slide down. After moving our stuff into the new accommodation, we walked around the city and watched the sunset. Let me tell you, there were a lot of people. You can see it from the pictures. In addition, we tried to find a photo spot with 3 churches lined up, according to the references we got from IG and postcards. We spent quite a while looking until the light was getting less and less. Finally, we found it by asking people along the way. The host is very welcoming! The scenery is fascinating and very suitable for friends who want to vacation in Santorini. But the bedding is a bit rough, it would be better if it was replaced with softer and skin-friendly ones.

What is a trip to Santorini without going to Oia? Oia is a beautiful place where tourists go there for the sunset. It is easily accessible, there is no need to rent a car. I took a bus at Fira for €2 and there i was in Oia. It was abit too cloudy on the day i visited Oia so i couldnt really see the sunset but it is still a place everyone should visit. Many instagramable photos can be taken there.

Honestly i was only stay for 3 days thinking this island is too touristics and it was too short because i did not expect that it's turns into great adventours.
