Ormoc is a port city, vibrant and peaceful with several landmark wonders and plenty of unveil scenic spots, including Lake Danao, Jiabong and Gubingo Caves. Ormoc, Leyte is a small place but a very nice place and friendly people. I went there because my friend invited me for her daughter's christening. I went there unplanned and I don't have time to browse about their tourist attractions. I even lost them but I met a kid and told me where to go and what are the good places in Ormoc. There is no traffic there and I love their food also. It is a great place to relax if you want to have a comfortable place. The plaza is so nice and enjoyable at night because of many people strolling there every night, there are barbecues and good restaurants in their plaza. Amazing!#staycation

I flew Manila→Tacloban (₱2,700), van to Ormoc (2 hrs, ₱150), tricycle to the park gate (₱200), paid the low municipal env fee (₱20–50, cash), and walked the 5 km shoreline trail. The mossy forest rim is the west bank: Hymenophyllum on the dipterocarp limbs, Polytrichum on the fallen Shorea, and the cliff is a 20 m basalt step where the lake narrows to the outlet. I walked it at 07:00, a Philippine hawk-eagle called, the lake flat as tin. The park has a few cottages (₱300/night) and a paddleboat (₱150/hr) but no crowd—Leyte travellers skip it for Kalanggaman. Mistake: I came in Nov and the trail was ankle-deep mud—Feb–May. Another: I swam off the grass shore and it dropped to 2 m mud; use the concrete steps at the ranger post. Would you base in Ormoc and day-trip Lake Danao for the moss rim, or camp at the park and add the Mahagnao Volcano NL side trip next day?

Alto Peak, also known as Mt. Aminduen, is the highest peak in Eastern Visayas, standing at 1,332 meters above sea level. Located in Ormoc, Leyte, this mountain is known for its steep trails, dense forests, and breathtaking summit views. Climbing it is a challenging yet rewarding experience, one that pushes hikers to their limits but rewards them with a sense of accomplishment and stunning scenery. The journey began at Lake Danao National Park, the usual jump-off point for Alto Peak. The serene lake, surrounded by lush greenery, was a calm contrast to the challenging trail ahead. The first section of the climb was relatively easy, passing through rolling terrain with thick vegetation. As we gained elevation, the trail gradually became steeper, and the forest grew denser. The real challenge began at the final stretch—an almost vertical ascent requiring ropes and careful footing. The muddy and slippery trail made every step a test of balance and endurance. Despite the difficulty, the cool mountain air and the sound of birds and rustling leaves provided moments of serenity amid the struggle. After hours of climbing, we finally reached the summit. The view was nothing short of spectacular—rolling mountains, deep valleys, and the distant coastline of Leyte and Samar. The wind was strong, and the temperature was noticeably cooler, a refreshing change after the grueling ascent. Standing on the peak, looking down at the vast landscape below, I felt a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration. Climbing Alto Peak was one of the most physically demanding hikes I’ve done, but it was also one of the most fulfilling. The challenge, the stunning scenery, and the sense of achievement made every difficult step worth it. It’s a mountain that demands respect but rewards those who take on the challenge with unforgettable memories.
