One of the best ways to explore Oxford is simply by walking. The city is compact, full of hidden lanes, historic colleges, and centuries of academic history around every corner. Our day started at the Ashmolean Museum, founded in 1683 and considered the world’s first university museum. It houses incredible collections ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts to Renaissance art, and it’s also free to visit. From there we walked towards the heart of the city, stopping around the Radcliffe Camera — one of Oxford’s most iconic buildings. This beautiful circular library, built in the 18th century, is part of the famous Bodleian Library and still used by students today. The surrounding streets feel timeless, with historic colleges and quiet courtyards everywhere you look. After wandering through the old streets, we took a short coffee and pastry break at the Covered Market, a historic indoor market that has been part of Oxford life since the 18th century. It’s the perfect place to pause before continuing the walk. Fun Fact: The famous Ben’s Cookies actually started right here in Oxford. The first shop opened in the Covered Market in 1983, and they’re still baking their warm, chunky cookies there today. Oxford is one of the most beautiful cities in Britain and it totally lives up to it’s reputation, it is full of stunning buildings and makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. It feels like you’re in the world of Harry Potter and get a sense of a life gone by. It is a lot smaller and quieter than London but still offers you an amazing glimpse of the history, culture and architecture of historical Britain. The university, castle district and shopping streets are lined with stone buildings with fascinating detailing. My biggest tip for oxford is to look up! So many buildings have underwhelming street level stores and restaurants but step back and look up and you can see stone carvings, stained glass windows, gargoyles and even some blue placks for historic buildings. Oxford Is a very walkable city an there is limited parking in the city center - best bet is to park securely in the suburbs and catch the bus into the city center. From there all sites are walkable, and you can do the city within a day. The whole city is very photogenic but obviously gets very busy! Traveled from Bristol to Oxford by bus, taking nearly 2 hours. But how could one visit England without coming to one of the oldest university towns in the world? Upon arrival, I was mesmerized by the beautiful and classic English-style architecture. The atmosphere was peaceful, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The first stop was the iconic Radcliffe Camera, a landmark of the city. Taking photos here is a must, though the queue can be a bit long. Continuing on, I came across the Bodleian Library, the historic library of the University of Oxford and one of the oldest libraries in Europe. Walking further, I encountered Christ Church, the Bridge of Sighs, and numerous cafes and souvenir shops. Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was evening and time to head back to Bristol. 😂

I visited the Malmaison prison in Oxford for a weekend in October 2025. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Our triple cell room was situated in C block at the top of the prison, offering spacious comfort with fantastic amenities—a nice experience staying in a prison cell. Friday night, we relished the Day of the Dead dinner, which was both pleasant and flavorful. Drinks were delightful, especially the spicy margarita. Breakfast offered a great selection; we enjoyed the California eggs and the kippers. The baked beans with the full English were slightly watery, and as a market town, they might consider sourcing local sausages. Overall, it’s a well-located, well-maintained hotel close to city center attractions. Many thanks to Sam for excellent bar service and Adrian for taking good care of us in the restaurant.

Both buses depart from Victoria Coach Station. The first place to visit in Oxford is Christ Church! This is an actual college building where students live, so tourists need to pay an entrance fee and can only explore designated areas. · Gothic Architecture: The stunning Gothic-style buildings are captivating. · Harry Potter Filming Location: You can see the staircase at the entrance to the Great Hall where Harry Potter and Malfoy first met, as well as the garden known as the Quidditch pitch. (Although the actual filming was done in a studio, this location served as inspiration.) · Magnificent Interior: Enjoy exploring the grand interior, including the cathedral with its beautifully decorated ceilings and columns, and the Great Hall adorned with portraits of past deans.

I passed by this shop every day on my way back to the dorm. Unfortunately, I usually returned too late to visit before closing. When we asked, the staff kindly allowed us to have a look around. While browsing, they shared with us the shop’s history, its location, and the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, along with tales about the author Lewis Carroll and Alice herself. The store has many adorable and collectible items, such as a manuscript edition of the Alice in Wonderland book. I couldn’t help but spend a lot. #northerneurope Inside the dining hall, there are stained glass windows featuring characters from Alice. The buildings are stunning and full of history, it’s hard to believe this is a school The cathedral was also absolutely magnificent. I bought an Oxford University hoodie as a souvenir. In addition to the most famous canteen as the setting for Harry Potter, the entire Christ Church College is full of beautiful buildings and historical sites. You can spend an entire afternoon here listening to the tour guide. It’s definitely worth a visit #oxford
