Free snorkeling in the Philippines is one of the best ways to explore the marine world without spending much. The archipelago, with thousands of islands, is surrounded by vibrant reefs where the water is warm and clear almost year-round. Best of all, you can snorkel for free in most places. All public beaches in the Philippines are open to everyone, and entry doesn’t cost a single peso. The only exceptions are private hotel areas or nature reserves where swimming might be restricted to protect the environment. So, if you pack a mask and snorkel in advance, and ideally fins too, you can snorkel anywhere and as much as you want. That’s what I always do, and I recommend you do the same. No need to book tours or stick to schedules—just head to the shore and dive in. If you didn’t buy gear at home, that’s not a problem either. On the islands, rental is very affordable, and rental stations are available at almost every beach. Approximate prices are as follows: mask and snorkel from 100 to 400 pesos per day, fins from 150 to 300 pesos. A full set rarely exceeds 500 pesos. It’s a small cost for a huge amount of fun. Fins aren’t mandatory, but they make life much easier. With fins, you swim faster, stay afloat effortlessly, and handle mild currents more easily. You can dive a bit deeper to explore the reef in detail. Without fins, it’s still comfortable, especially in calm waters, but with them, it’s simply more enjoyable. To protect your feet from sharp corals and rocks, bring special aqua shoes. They’re easy to rent or buy locally for a small price. They prevent cuts and slipping on wet rocks. Many locals wear them all the time. A crucial note: never touch corals with your hands or step on them. Corals are living organisms, not rocks. A single touch can damage their protective layer, causing the reef to get sick or bleach. Plus, you risk getting cuts or irritation from polyps. Just enjoy the beauty from a distance and leave everything as it is for those who come after you. Now, let’s go over the best locations where snorkeling is free and accessible from the shore. Moalboal on Cebu Island. Panagsama Beach is open and free. Right off the shore begins the famous sardine run. Millions of silver fish swirl in a massive underwater vortex. It’s a mesmerizing sight that doesn’t require a boat. Dauin on Negros Island. A marine sanctuary with stunning corals and turtles. Entry is free, and you can snorkel right from the sand. The water is clear, the seabed is visible, and there are usually few people around. El Nido on Palawan. Many public beaches allow free snorkeling. Near the shore, you’ll find reefs with vibrant clownfish, anemones, and starfish. The water clarity is simply magical. Anda on Bohol. Quiet white beaches with crystal-clear water and reefs right at the edge. Perfect for peaceful snorkeling without tourist crowds. The Philippines is located in the heart of the Coral Triangle. It’s home to 76% of all coral species on the planet. This means the underwater world here is richer than almost anywhere else. Where to go for a true WOW effect? For me, without a doubt, it's the Philippines, and first and foremost, El Nido in Palawan. It's one of the most stunning marine reserves in the world. Black karst cliffs, turquoise lagoons, pristine white beaches, and water that looks like a 'Bounty' commercial, only 100 times better. I've never seen so many shades of blue anywhere else! But let's be honest, El Nido suffers from overtourism. There are crowds of tourists, trash, and prices that are 2-3 times higher than in Thailand or Vietnam. Meanwhile, the infrastructure is lagging behind, and the comfort level of accommodations is very low. The town itself is chaotic, with construction, dust, and traffic jams caused by tricycles. Don't expect a perfect paradise in the town of El Nido. It's typical Asian hustle and bustle. How to get there on a budget: - A direct flight from Manila costs $150-200 and takes about an hour. - A flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa costs $20-30 + a minivan ride of 5-6 hours, which costs another $10-15. Where to stay: - El Nido Town is the central area, close to tour starting points, cafes, and travel agencies. Accommodation starts at $30-40 and can be decent. However, no one is safe from mold or salty water in the shower. - Corong-Corong Beach is a 10-15 minute walk from the town. We stayed here, and the best part was the fantastic sunsets and starry skies! But the beach isn't suitable for swimming, and after sunset, it's dark, so it's better to walk with a flashlight. - Las Cabanas / Lio Beach is cleaner, more modern, and suitable for swimming. It's more expensive, starting at around $50, but more comfortable. But the most important thing is that tours to the reserve start from here. And it's one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.

If you're planning a trip to El Nido, I'd recommend staying longer, maybe 5 days, but you can also visit the top spots in 3 days! The main reason people come to El Nido is for the stunningly beautiful islands, lagoons, beaches, gray limestone cliffs, and turquoise waters with their underwater world. 🏝️Sea tours in El Nido are simple and straightforward. There are 4 tours: A, B, C, and D. You can purchase them literally anywhere, at your hotel or online. I booked the most popular tours, A and C. 📍Which locations are included in the itinerary? Tour A: Secret Lagoon, Big Lagoon, 7 Commando Beach, Shimizu Island, Payong-Payong Beach. Tour C: Helicopter Island, Hidden Beach, Secret Beach, Talisay Beach, Matinloc Shrine. 💸Tours cost 1200-1800 pesos (1500-2300 rubles). Lunch is included. It is served on the boat or beach. Typically, it consists of rice, vegetables, chicken, fish, shrimp, and fruit. Water is also provided free of charge, and beer and soft drinks can be purchased on the boat or beaches. Snorkeling equipment rental and kayaking are available for an additional fee. ⏱️Tours begin early in the morning and end around 5:00 PM. In the morning, you'll be picked up from your hotel at the office, where you'll receive a ticket with the boat's name. Then you'll wait at the pier with the other tourists until your guide takes you to the boat. Guides in the Philippines are a special treat. They're super friendly, always take great photos, make sure you've eaten, put on some SPF, and are generally doing well. Like all Filipinos, they're always positive, joking, and laughing. Since boats can't always dock right off the shore due to coral reefs, you often have to wade or even swim. So be sure to bring aqua shoes, a waterproof phone case, and a dry bag for your personal belongings. 🏖️On a day off from boat excursions, you can visit the nearby beaches. Since I don't have a license, I just rented a tricycle with a driver for 1,500 pesos (2,000 rubles) for the whole day. He can take you to beaches or waterfalls, and wait as long as you need. I ended up visiting Lio Beach and Nacpan Beach (my favorite, long and very beautiful), where I sunbathed and also had the best massage on the beach with a stunning view for only 500 pesos (650 rubles!!!). 🌴El Nido is the most popular destination in Palawan. It's convenient for access to the most beautiful lagoons, beaches, and caves. I stayed there because I could quickly get to the pier in the morning, where all the excursion boats depart. The town itself is small but lively. There's no swimming beach here, as boats are moored everywhere. However, there are beautiful beaches in the area where you can sunbathe, swim, and surf. 📍El Nido is a comfortable place to spend 3-5 nights, enjoying boat excursions and the surrounding area. In the evening, we went to a restaurant recommended by a friend—Alpendre. This meal truly satisfied me! The restaurant's signature seafood porridge is excellent. The lobster meat is fresh, sweet, and tender, with every bite bursting with rich ocean flavors. My husband also enjoyed it. My husband doesn't eat seafood, so he ordered meat. The texture is firm, the portion is generous, and it's also very delicious. The fish cakes recommended by the restaurant are also worth trying. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, but be careful of fish bones when eating, especially when giving them to children. After the meal, we felt full and satisfied.
