However, I think many tourists take this phrase literally—they want to at least get a glimpse of the famous cabaret, even without actually visiting. The Moulin Rouge, which translates as "Red Mill," opened in 1889 at the foot of Montmartre Hill and immediately became popular—it perfectly reflected the Parisian spirit of the time: ease, carefreeness, and joie de vivre. There are two versions of the origin of this name: 1. The mill at the entrance to the cabaret was built as a symbol, a reminder that, before modern development, Montmartre Hill was a place where the French grew grapes, and windmills always operated in the vineyard areas. The red color is no coincidence: the cabaret was located in the local red light district. 2. A more brutal legend: according to it, during the Napoleonic Wars, four miller brothers defended the Montmartre hill. All four died in battle, but one managed to kill an enemy officer before dying. Then, the officer's friends, consumed by revenge, tied the miller to the wings of the staircase, and his blood dyed the building red. Creepy, huh? Initially, the cabaret gained a bad reputation – after all, the area wasn't the most prosperous. Feelings along the way: Walking gave me a unique perspective of Paris. Although the final stretch involved steep slopes and high stairs leading to the basilica, the stunning white architecture of Sacré-Cœur gradually coming into view from afar was a great motivator. Upon reaching the destination: • Panoramic view: From the front of the basilica, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Paris. The sunlight reflecting off the cityscape is a sight that makes all the effort worthwhile. • Architecture: The basilica itself is majestic and sacred. I recommend walking around it to appreciate the intricate details of the sculptures. Tips for those who want to follow this route: 1. Comfortable shoes: Wear the most comfortable sneakers you have, as the climb up Montmartre can be quite steep. 2. Bring water: While there are shops along the way, having water on hand is very helpful, especially when climbing the stairs in front of the basilica. 3.
